I don't know of any official retcon or explanation (although on writing this, maybe the 1e dragonlance adventures mentioned it?), I always treated them both as separate entities that shared similar iconography the same as I do with Paladine and Bahamut. As is, she's dead now and Paladine is no longer a god unless all of this gets ignored in 5e which could happen considering how many FR gods have...

I wish smite was the only issue, then I'd just change that but in a game so tightly tied to bounded accuracy getting +3 or +4 to all saves is a huge deal. One of my players has suggested that Paladins of 6th level or higher are "the best magic item in the book". How's this for a demented high level adventure. The party is sent to rescue a holy warrior of (nature deity) who also happens to be...

All this talk about jealousy from other players, in my experiences, I've seen more players get jealous of my three different Tempest Clerics than any Paladin. Even my melee optimized Tempest ended up stealing the show more times than not. I do think that the 5e Paladin is the overall strongest class from top to bottom though.

This goes right back to the OP! Absolutely. I don't get this idea that "different" = "narrower", or that "GM curated experience" = "caters to/generates a wide range of experiences". For instance: if player X wants to play Fate, and player Y wants to play Moldvay Basic, a game in which the GM curates Ideals/Bonds/Flaws for X, while rolling wandering monsters for Y, isn't giving either of...

I don't think the latter is system-independent at all. Compare Manbearcat's example of DitV, where the system establishes a relationship with the PC's brother; or In a Wicked Age (that's on my mind befause I GMed a short session of it not too long ago) which establishes interlinked and conflicting "best interests" for each character (PC and NPC). Ie not system-independent. OK, replace...

This seems broadly similar to Umbran on Dread: it is known that some crisis will occur (the collapse of the tower => PC death; the need to confront the PC's brother); but there is uncertainty around when/how this will happen (until...

The on-label uses - springinig doors and ruining spears & arrows? Really? Newfangled stuff, anyway. ;) At least you've got 8th & 9th level spells. Agree, Divine Smite as written in PHB is the only real problem, it easily leads to what I've heard called the "Crit Fisher" or similar, i.e. you try and maximise your ability to land critical hits, then use Divine Smite on your crit so you get double a large pool of dice. I'd much rather it worked like most other spells and abilities - you declare you're using Divine Smite (e.g. as a Bonus...

The main difference I see that boosts Palladin in 5th vs. earlier editions is that they can declare smite *after* they confirm a successful to-hit roll. Every earlier edition had to declare smite before the to-hit roll and I had *never* landed a successful smite until 5th edition. I started in 1984.

For players to be able to 'buy victory' they have to have something to pay with. In the types of games lumpley is talking about, players create characters with multiple dramatic needs and progress towards fulfilling these needs, or not, is how costs are paid and what drives the arc of the story. Yes, you can find a Jedi master to train you, but your best friend gets frozen. Yes, your informant...

werecorpse, in my experience paladins have not felt overpowered, and while the aura is awesome it's as much of a buff for allies that do melee as the paladin themselves if they allies are close (which does cause other issues). Of course that's just one person's perspective and it may not apply to your game, but my rogue/fighter never felt "jealous" of the paladin. Yes, every once in a while...

They transfer over ok with their original stats, although picking the right sub-classes and feats is fun. Tika even got a write up as a fighter with her thieves' abilities being covered off with her background in 5e.

This seems to be misdirected: I was saying that with far more spells known than spell slots, spells known is not a limitation. I find that most of my slots get used in a small circle of spells, including Hex, leaving a lot of spells known unused. However, with Rituals (I favor Tomelock as well), a lot of cantrips, and special abilities from invocations, my Warlock(s) tend to also feel flush...

With far more spells known than spells per day, I have never seen this as a problem. My warlocks prepare Hex as a 'most of the time' spell and then have a laundry list of other spells known that cover a wide variety of situations, but few rarely ever get cast. If the warlock capped out at 5 spells known it would not make a huge difference in my warlocks.
