Again with monster complaints. :erm: It is like no one bothered to read what I posted upthread regarding modifying monsters, using terrain, weather and most importantly using the fluff. More ideas. 1. Rest: Change up rest periods or possibility of rest. If rest is always possible, then PC's resource management and attrition (a big part of the game) is absent and will negatively affect combat...

right, he said that and Shalosha remembered it. As for Katrina and Shalosha... usually I decide on the NPC's stances by background, general attitude and narrative. But there are times when I simply cannot decide between two or more options and then I simply roll the dice. Hence Shalosha's (good and successful) sense motive vs. Katrina's (good) bluff and Katrina's (rather bad and failed) sense...

Yes, we dropped Inspiration entirely. My players don't like that there's a shortcut to optimizing - to them it cheapens the accomplishment of setting up Advantage. Do note that the proposal above works no matter what. It provides a static bonus and extra movement - not advantage, precisely for this reason. Also, a player might never use the Inspiration he starts each session with, and...

Okay, that's a fair point. Then I guess the player needs to learn to ask his DM instead of consulting books. The idea that a player could overrule his DM using rules quotes was never a good idea in the first place. But you're right, if that is what one was used to, then the complaint makes sense. (Do note that if WOtC had written what I just wrote, "use DC 15 unless you're sure it's...

I would have liked a little bit more balance in the general usefulness of the 6 ability scores. There is still a certain tendency to "dump" Strength, Intelligence or Charisma significantly more often than the other three. During the playtest I always wrote that in my feedback, the difference between the "greater three" and the "lesser three" could have been mitigated a bit for example by...

I disagree... mostly. At 1st level, I think Backgrounds make for a great addition to the character. I agree that they very quickly fall by the wayside, though. I think I'd be inclined to suggest that at 5th level they should consider having the character's Background be superseded by something else (maybe Faction at 5th level, then a Paragon Path at 11th, and Epic Destiny at 16th?). Yeah,...

What you describe seems non-simultaneous in the strictest sense because the archer's shot lands **before** the wizard finishes his spell. So there does seem to be a sequence of completion off tasks. This seems to indicate a set of staged resolution steps with spells after bows. Have seen that in systems before and nothing wrong with it especially when you dial those resolution stages to...

Now the only significant mechanical (as opposed to fiction or story-based) setback left is PC death. Easily prevented by even a slightly more strict enforcement of encumbrance rules. If a divine is devoted to bring anti-undead but one of his clerics still getting sprlls etc is walking around with his train of undead followers, that creates an entirely different aspect to the world, not just a difference in his player's head. That's different from a character and a player just...

I do think 5e would have benefitted from more guidance on setting DCs. I had a lot of experience setting DCs coming out of 4e which helped a lot, but there is not much for a new GM to decide what 'easy' or 'hard' means. Referring to monster save DCs in the MM can help, eg low level monster save DCs are in the 11-13 range, which a GM might not realise is an appropriate range for a lot of checks....

"My patron or God doesn't get involved in his cleric's activities" isn't really all that different from alignment. And, let's be honest, every edition of the game from 1e to 3e made alignment a major element mechanically. For me, it was a case of a single player wanting to essentially background alignment. Which is what backgrounding always is - a single player and a single character. So, for...

Also, if a gm can ignore the list of easy moderate hard etc znd the values assigned then that same gm csn choose to ignore a set CD value. As for mystery dcs, if a gm is not running a consistent enough set of DCs threm yeah, there should be an assessment possible. That would be a good place for variant ability scores, using say wisdom or intelligence with the related proficiency.

If it is a background summary, then I have no problem with it. It should give a DM enough to know the motivations of the NPCs. But if it turns into a full biography, then that should not be part of a module. If I am running a campaign, then in the campaign setting notes having a more detailed background would be a plus. But not in a single, stand-alone module.

I, fortunately, have never had to walk out on a game because of DM bad behavior.

Rolling this back a bit, I'm reminded of an experience I had with a new player some years ago. He came to the group and, as this was a VTT game, I didn't know the guy from a hole in the ground. No worries, I'd dealt with that before. But, he insisted that his character was Chaotic Neutral. This immediately set off alarm bells in my head and I made it very clear that we played a, to use an MMO...

"Holy Mage Armor" while walking around a consecrated site? Sure. Maybe a sage of the faiths should warn the PCs first, or describe the special Hallow spell that particular denomination uses. So they know that the guys in robes are tougher to hit than their Wizard.

Yes and no. Fluff is prescriptive unless it gets changed, and it's really easy to change. As DM, I'm not bound to any fluff as I can change it at will. As a player, the player is bound unless he comes to me and discusses whatever change with me. I approve the vast majority of changes. They're fluff rules and don't cause imbalance when altered, so I will alter them far more often than I will...

In MtG, Ravnica is part of the MtG multiverse. In DnD, it is part of the DnD multiverse. If you can't wrap your head around that, I cant help you and you'll just have to live in denial.

In the intro to the Planeshift: Dominara booklet, Wyatt says that he considers Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica to be the Planeshift document. They chose to work on it because it is the current M:tG,and seemed different enough to warrant a full book.

I generally don't much care for modern modules for this very reason, but I have much love for the early stuff. I think, though, that the later crop of 5e modules have improved some in this regard! But I just skim that stuff for the general gist ("Blah-blah-blah, evil wizard, eat the smurfs, yadda-yadda"), so I have context for the stuff I'm gonna yoink.

Zendikar is basically DnD in MtG, though I guess it was different enough to warrant a setting book outside of a planeshift document or maybe it wasn't chosen because it has a planeshift document.

Alan gets an "oh, you're asking me" expression on his face, and has a quick look around. "Well, perhaps we could tackle them clockwise?" He waves towards the one immediately to the south.

If the Living Forgotten Realms adventures are still available on the Web or from WotC, there are some good ones you can use. I still remember AGLA1-1 (but not the title alas), where our group was waylaid by some pixies who wanted "Tell us a story!" We found out who could ad-lib.

Worldbuilding is one of my favourite aspects of D&D. I can't say I struggle with it and I tend to do it pretty ad hoc, as things spring to mind. Sometimes I have built myself into a corner as I make things up on a the spot, sure, but I also take a lot of joy out of making up convoluted justifications for the more silly things I throw out.
