Looks fine. A handaxe is enough for ranged fighting. Especially when at level 3 you can resummon it in your hand after you have thrown it. An eldritch knight is the only class who can throw two weapons per round at level 5. You might get a few more handaxes then. Your breath weapon is also a nice area attack which saves you a spell slot for the occasional thunderwave or burning hands (which our...

The Dungeons & Dragons Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica debuts in November. But you don’t have to wait until then to gain inspiration for your D&D game. The art and text from Magic the Gathering cards for Ravnica are filled with ideas to untap. A trailer from YouTube from 2012 depicts many buildings in Ravnica and describes the guilds. Watching it immerses a DM in the setting. Jace, keeper...

Different groups find fun in different things, of course. The reason as DM I have my characters come back one level below the lowest level survivor is oriented toward the fun of the challenge. Survivors get to feel that their efforts to survive were meaningful. For me, coming back at the same level removes some of that meaning: it made no odds, mechanically at least, if the character lived or...

I chose Try to keep up, but in fact new characters come in one level below the lowest, at the bottom of that level. This has worked well over a two year campaign. That said, I don't stint on revival magic: characters can generally access whatever they can afford. I do include a casting cost on top of the material costs, though. Getting to the front of the queue for a raise means paying the...

See my post above. I missed one concern. I have found abilities like Protection and Sentinel problematic in play. They put the DM in a difficult position where they have to judge if a foe who is experienced in combat, and whose life depends on it, reasonably would attack the bard when they know that will trigger the knight's protection?! That's a concrete example of general conundrum. The DM can...

I've played an Eldritch Knight through tier 1 in Tales of the Yawning Portal. I started out with some other style, but my DM let me switch to Defense after our first session. If we are talking about plain leverage on the narrative through combat, I think the main path for an EK is Defense style + Plate + Shield + Shield spell. This gives a base armor of 21, going to 26. I think your stats...

Meh, so far anything nautical and D&D has not mixed well in the past and I doubt that will be different here. A main point of conflict is the lore. D&D is very pulp driven. The problem is that the popular image of Sword & Sorcery and the popular image of nautical adventures (aka pirates) do not mix very well. On one side you have swords and mostly medieval (actually early rennaisance) trapping...

Something from the d100/BRP family would be my suggestion. Take Delta Green or one of Call of Cthulhu's supplements for play later than the default 1920s era, and add one of the fantasy versions for more magic. They certainly meet all five conditions. Although I have to say that I don't see why Savage Worlds wouldn't work if you have it, as while I don't really like it myself it's perfectly fine...

As GM I see rules as rules, not guidelines to change at whim. I like to think about it first and make changes clear. I try to avoid ad hoc changes in play but it is occasionally necessary where eg something I didn't know about (recently: 5e Gloom Ranger invisibility to Darkvision) impacts a prior change (Darkvision being more effective & common than 5e RAW in my OSR-megadungeon Stonehell game)....

The most important rule to remember here is it is up to the DM to decide what responds to the summons, not the player. Most DMs would probably give the players what they wanted if the felt the request was reasonable, but any attempt at rule bending exploits would probably result in rabbits.

Yeah I like the focus idea. Don’t penalize people or take away their ability to use potions, instead give a big buff for using them. I’d guess this would scale better with higher level effects. I also like that Jason said for treat wounds that it’s 10 minutes for the group, not ten minutes for one person. I wonder if there will be a person cap on that.

Since Quarterstaff is STR-only you won't be very good with it compared to the shortsword (light, finesse) - I would leave it behind. I think technically your optimal weapon may be the d8 rapier (being finesse) when you can get one. Since you presumably will mostly be holding your bow and drawing sword only in self defence. 2 shortswords gives an extra bonus attack, but per RAW you can't drop...

Also to keep the summons a CR 2 you need a large or smaller creature and it would have the wyrmling breath weapon. A huge creature would need to be CR 7 or higher, and get a young dragon breath weapon. But such a beast would not be a viable candidate for summoning. I suggest a polar bear or perhaps a rhinoceros. Saber -Toothed Tiger also works if you want something stealthy with pounce.

RAW it is allowable if you keep the challenge rating the same. The template does not change the creature type so it is still a beast, and a beast is a viable candidate for the template. IMO: Ditch squares. They are there for ease of measuring, not for controlling movement and positioning.

Personally, I'd like a Feywild adventure or a Far Realm adventure either brand new or a remake of Firestorm Peak.

Haven’t seen a thread for the cleric guide yet, but wanted to note that for your heroes feat spell you can’t do it every day without having a lot of disposable income due to it costing 1,000 gp per casting as it’s consumed.

In this case I would confine the player to his or her cage in the basement and drag up the next one in line. They would probably start at 4th to 5th level depending on wether they were good.

@treantmonk, quick sanity check: I think the part 2 guide in your first post currently points to the doc you stopped updating. Might want to redirect it to the living doc.

Howdy Omeganian amigo! :) yes on all counts. Got a few ideas brewing for some smaller (Epic) Adventure Bestiary books based on ideas I meant to release 8 years ago with a few new twists. ;) By keeping these books smaller I can hopefully turn them around faster BUT I won't get any hopes up until I have a book fully written.

"Just a second, lets get the others in on this." The Kitsune image launched herself straight upward to hover in midair over the opening of the pit. "Hey guys, come on down! We found a seeeeeeeecret." Then, as the real Kitsune finished climbing down to the bottom herself, the illusory doppelganger plummeted back down and cautiously probed forward through the doorway.

I can be a hard guy to DM for... I have a bad tendency to bring my "A" game to the table, even when doing a beer-and-pretzels game. I sometimes forget to dial it down to the level of the current game and end up unintentionally hijacking it. One of the major symptoms of that is I sometimes get grief from the "screw the plan, I'm charging in" guys (and even occasionally just the "hey, I've...

I wouldn’t restrict Help to the helper having to be proficient. Just require that they have something relevant to the situation. As for bardic inspiration, the rules don’t require any specifics for a reason. If you want them to roleplay their abilities more, I’d start by telling them that, and letting them know that you’re going to require descriptions from them when they use abilities. ...

My tactic, if you really like the AP, is to keep the basics and not worry too much about how accurate the crunchy translations are; that said, I also tend to make changes that seem subtle at first.

It's impossible for Lucky to apply to a passive check, because a passive check doesn't involve a roll on the part of the character. They are treated as having rolled a 10. It's also worth noting that Survival checks for navigation are generally taken against a set DC - the DM decides how difficult the task of navigating the current set of terrain is, and the character rolls to beat that DC....

The intrepid excavators set out to investigate the fabled gun emplacement, having heard rumors of missing dig teams being taken there, of the vile humanoid occupants, of heartless slavers, and a great trove...

In my experience, a major sin of GMs I played with, has been to negate the players having a proper background, or goal, to start with, going also against the rules, for the purpose of railroad: in plain sight, or carefully hidden in a sandbox style game, negating players' agency all the way along. We played an early version of Godbound, the gm forbid the use of background for the PCs (bg gives...
