By my (grey-specked) beard, indeed! But don't forget the 1d4 HP! Though, to be fair, even back then I would've allowed the poor soul that rolled a 1 for HP to re-roll. You are absolutely right, that it is more than just the rules set, but a conglomeration of place and time. It’s about how we struggled through the rules sometimes (or often), about the books and movies and art and videogames...

Yes, I have and it's pretty sick. The main use is when the party is fighting something with AOE attacks. DM's I play with usually love to surprise a party with a fireball or a dragon breathing on them in the beginning. Having a tough start to a fight that we need to slog our way to victory seems a common thing, even in the published adventures. So yea, a lot of times the whole party is...

    1. Relax. It will all be okay. 2. Have fun! That's why we play. 3. Get at least two sets of dice you like.* Then, when you start rolling badly with one set, switch to the other. Trust me on this - you'll understand when it happens. Even if you don't believe in luck. 4. Again, relax. You will make some mistakes, it's your first time, enjoy yourself.

With polymorph you replace the fighter's mental attributes with those of a toad. What would a toad do when suddenly confronted by a noisy fight between much larger beings? I think it would hop away for cover, assuming that it was not somehow stuck inside the armor and clothing the fighter was wearing. If so the other players might think poor fighter was disintegrated, which would be a sneaky...

Given the recent thread closure elsewhere, and the derailing that took that thread in that direction, it might be worth asking some questions about the policy for keeping threads on topic and/or what qualifies as politics. In my opinion, this site has a somewhat stricter enforcement of these things than most. I assume this is because of a longer history and experiences here that have proven that...

That's what we were doing for a while, but it just slows things down too much. Yep, in really big battles we can spent 2-3 hours just resolving combat. It can be exciting to a point but then after a while it is tedious, especially with characters nearly always doing the same action over and over.

If you polymorph someone into a very tiny creature, their allies need to identify that you've done so. They could use their reaction to identify the spell, they might have strong enough perception to see that there was a tiny creature left over, etc... but they do not automatically know what happened to the PC. Second, creative choices for the form can cause more chaos. So can readily prepared...

If the party understands the limitations of polymorph, sure. If you don't have anyone who can cast it, just describe the hag gesturign and sayign a word and the fighter turns into a toad. Does someone possibly waste their action attacking it? Or you can turn it into something with lots of HPs but little ability to affect the battle, like some sort of big fish. Also Hold Person allows a...

Good advice above. I’m in the “the basic rules are enough for now—wait to purchase” camp. One thing I’ve seen new players struggle with that isn’t addressed above is knowing which die is which. The d8 and d10 (eight and ten sided dice, respectively) are the closest in appearance. Learn to distinguish them. Similarly, the d12 and D20 can look similar, though not as much so. This might...

This seems to touch upon a problem that I have encountered with Inspiration. For some preferences, it's gimmick that is too intrusive; however, for other preferences, it does not do its supposed "gimmick" well enough. (I don't think I would do any justice to the positions by ascribing particular playstyles to these positions nor would I recommend that others attempt it.) There are certainly...

Another ''good'' option, if you want to use hags as devious, plotting creatures instead of BBEG that fights toe-to-toe with the party, is to polymorph a player into a small creatures that doesnt have a swim speed and cant breath under water, then drop him in a pond or fish tank, whatever. Drowning in 5e can kill you but doest deal damage, so it would revert the spell :P

It's not great as a debuff, but it has it's uses. I would totally polymorph the fighter. But I'd wait until he was close, so one of the hags could pick him up or something. Make it harder for the party to just hit him to break the spell. And even if they do, it has hopefully used up two characters turns (the fighter, hopefully, and whoever hits him). 5e enemy casters are just as powerful as PC...

Absolutely, but I wanted to start out by saying that it wasn't inherently bad to go one way or the other. I think it depends on what 'cinematic' quality you are trying to achieve. 'Cinematic' is a word that is used often but vaguely defined in RPGs, but for these purposes by 'cinematic' I mean that the process of play tends to aid in imagining the scene. A game is more 'cinematic' the...

My suggestion: Don't do too much before the first session. Every group is different. Getting a chance to figure out how the group works may influence how you proceed. For example, if the DM uses D&DBeyond, you may have access to all books electronically once in his campaign without buying anything. If not, you may want to purchase your own PHB. Blue dice are better. It is known. ...

I'm studying in prep to run a night hag coven and thought I should polymorph the party's fighter (turning him into a toad seems thematically appropriate.) But all that needs to happen, basically, is a party member swats the frog, does some minor damage to kill it, and the spell is broken. It seems like Hold Person is a better spell for taking out a combatant, and it's lower level. With easy...

Demodand. I love the etymology. Like so many things in D&D, it came from Vance's Dying Earth. In Dying Earth, though, it was called a Deodand. And Vance likely borrowed the term (as he tended to do) from what was then an obscure legal term for a object that is forfeited because it caused a person's death (which traces back to Roman law). Words, man.

There will come a time (not in my lifetime, for obvious reasons), that there are no more of those folks. And a grognard would indeed be someone that started with 2e, maybe even 3e. As a group, the PCs select which PC goes first and that PC acts. After...

My DM likes to use popcorn initiative a lot. I love that system. Basically, everyone rolls initiative at the beginning of each round. The person with the highest goes first, but then picks which of their allies goes next. The DM also rolls a die after each player's turn to see if the initiative switches to the monsters. For us, it keeps us all engaged and actually seems to go faster most of...

I ran a D&D 3.5 campaign that ran until the characters were around 15th-17th level. By then I was finding it very difficult to run the games. My Star Wars d20 campaign ran until about 12th level, by which time the characters (even without any Jedi) were overpowered. One of them had something like +22 on Pilot checks, for instance.

You could go with the old-school method: Each round, declare your action, then roll initiative. Actions are resolved in initiative order. It adds a lot of excitement to the initiative roll, and it discourages "clockwork planning" where the PCs orchestrate an elaborate sequence of actions based on a known initiative order. On the down side, it makes things more chaotic, and it doesn't mesh...

Make sure you bring a dice, pencil, paper, and your character sheet. The Player's Handbook should be your first big purchase. Either the physical copy or on DnD Beyond if you prefer digital stuff. I don't think there is anything wrong with putting off buying it until after you've played a couple of times. That way if you end up not liking the game, you haven't wasted the money. But, you seem...

But part of the fun of the game is filling in gaps by developing systems to cover things not in the game already, answering questions like how much water and fuel a steam golem needs to function, how long can you fight in steam powered armour, and other things you need to steam power rules for so you have to homebrew.

Yeah I can see where a defined value that modifies a certain sub-group of die rolls could be see as difficult and hard to track by 5e players. Then again, I could see some folks wondering if imagining "I get karmic credit" is enough to gain advantage, why in the world is Help an sction and not just an interaction "Hey bud, I think you are due. #1 You don't need to know anything to play D&D for the first time. A good Dungeon Master (& good players at the table) will help you through it. #2 Find time before the first session to sit with the DM and make your character together. I like to be present when my players make their characters, in case they have questions or want to make a controversial choice. #3 Don't buy anything yet. ...

Not to me it doesn't. If I feel Inspired I can transfer that to anything using a little imagination. In the example you cite, my character thinks "Well, I was really honest that time, so I deserve a shot to pick this lock - although it is hardly an honest pursuit - because of the 'karma credit' I built up by being honest previously! It works fine if you want it to - it's certainly down to the...

I am of the same mind. A 20 on a random encounter, means an exotic encounter in my campaigns. This can be good or bad, but it is usually something quite interesting.

I call fights all the time. No need to draw out a boring battle where the players are just swatting away at the last few remaining hitpoints. Also, I have enemies surrender or flee when they are about to die. Not every enemy in my campaign fights to the death. This also helps shorten fights.

By high levels you have some real encounter ending spells. I'd highly consider it at level 14. Initiative and Dex saves are also useful. You get the initiative bonus and dex save bonus for most of the game. The odd con doesn't benefit you till level 14/15. I don't think the odd con is worth it.

While titans battled for the blitzbowl championship, I spoke to Daniel D. Fox, emperor of Grim and Perilous Studios’ Zweihänder RPG dynasty. He talked playtesting, balanced math, and upcoming projects like the TetsubōRPG. Zweihander manages by the grim machinations of its creator, Daniel D. Fox, to forge itself into something both eerily familiar and utterly belonging to the current...

Well if we were going with emulating the genre of fiction, we could even employ the fairy tale Rule of 3 trope. The first two places you visit will not have what you seek, but the third time will be the charm.

What you seem to be describing is represents in other systems as speed (say in hero) where you get a number of turns in a round and thr other guy gets b number in z round etc. 5e specifically avoids this as a given passive thing, and you have to create this by using features or abilities that either give you extra actions (action surge or haste or various ambush type features) or hy depriving...

As others said, it really depends on the game. In Against the Darkmaster, we decided to make each blow potentially lethal or maiming for several reasons. First because we wanted to raise the stakes of combat. If in every combat there's a chance that your character will die or suffer a long-lasting injury, fighting is not a choice to be made lightly. It means that either you have no other...
