    1. Monks aren't just about damage. They get a lot of versatile abilities. 2. Subclass plays a big role. Open Hand is the default and makes Flurry of Blows better. A Shadow Monk will use their spells more than Flurry but that is by design. 3. Stunning Strike is the key Monk ability.

While in game terms, there is nothing stopping this from happening, in story terms, it probably shouldn't be allowed. The reason for this is because divine magic is only granted to the most devoted and the most faithful. When your faith waivers, so does the magic. Any god has the right to restrict spells and even remove spell casting abilities all together from their followers or worse, place...

I don't know if the word "tank" was used, but it certainly was a concept before MMOs - even in our early D&D games back in the 2nd ed era, and before the internet became a thing, we would have "front line specialists" who would get between the casters and the monsters.

I look at the rarity system as a starting point, not the end point. A quick way to have a rough gauge. I also disagree with the rarity of certain items, it's never made sense to me that a +1 shield is uncommon while +1 armor is rare for example - they may have done that to try to limit stacking, or maybe because a shield requires less material. Without asking the devs we don't know. But...

My understanding is that a monk's Martial Arts and Flurry of Blows are not the same as Two Weapon Fighting rules. This is a case of an exception overriding the general rule. So, you would indeed apply your Dexterity modifier to all unarmed attacks as a monk.

I think Polearm Master + defensive fighting style works perfect here. Use a reach weapon to make your Attack and bonus action attack (multiple chances to apply colossus slayer here). Then step back and force the enemy to come into your reach and try to hit it again with colossus slayer on your turn. Any other concepts anyone particularly likes for a non-hunter's mark ranger?

the question is more centered on the situation where you expend no ki and you get the monk weapon and an unarmed attack. If you spend ki you get the monk weapon attack and two unarmed strikes. Picking up one additional d4 damage in an attack sequence seems like a pretty low return for spending a ki point on.

I mean, unless you only make 4 attacks in a day and use ki every singe time almost all of my 4th level attacks are just the Martial Arts attacks, which is how the rules are clearly set up, the monk weapon and unarmed strike. True, though I am loathe to cite Ron Edwards, or at least anything that invokes 'GNS'. Its true that we often fall into using his terminology (or some bastardization of it) but I long ago dismissed the theory itself! I think even Ron has... The posts are lost somewhere in the mass of stuff I've posted on EnWorld over the years, but somewhere there's a thread where I demolished the very concept...

Why did the Druid choose to knock out the wolves, rather than kill them, during the combat in the first place? Why do you say that "those kills were really unnecessary"? There seems to be more to the story. Based on the info you provided, it seems to me that the Druid did not start out intending to kill the wolves, but that your narration of the Druid sensing the relief of the wolves then...

As the party hurries back toward the entrance goblins dart into cracks to make way. Luthor recalls that Worgs are different from wolves. Worgs have a higher level of intelligence than wolves and are more often than not evil in nature. A couple of panicked goblins run past you with an animal carcass as you emerge from the cave. "TukTuk is still out there." says one of the perimeter guards, in...

This isn't completely the case. You can always build off of something that already exists. I'm certainly not trying to take away support from Forged, this application is amazing. However, for everyone that already has the books, it is time consuming, but not impossible, to create your own simple spreadsheet tables and input them into a premade character sheet template. The main reason, I...

Thanks for the feedback! This is great stuff. One clarification: That... is exactly how it already is. "As a bonus action, you can channel mystical energy into yourself, enhancing your abilities briefly. Until the start of your next turn..." It's intentionally modeled after the Samurai ability, although stronger (because of the duration) and usable less often. It's until the start of...

Yes, this is largely my point. I like player agency. I donít think it needs to be ubiquitous. In fact, I think that too much is probably a bad thing. This applies to the authorship as well. As much as an RPG is a story, I prefer it still also remain a game.

Dain's intense interest in the proclamations from the great tower was interrupted by the woman weaving through the crowd, and even more by the man who chased her. The armed man. The Guardsman. Glancing over at his half-orc lunch companion, Dain did not think he had noticed the chase that was underway. He couldn't entirely blame him: the goat jerky was fairly incredible. Essithea...what happens...

If a tank means a damage sponge then a barbarian. If a tank means drawing enemies to attack you while being able to survive those hits then I vote life cleric. Life clerics give lots of reasons for enemies to want to attack them. 1. Enemies often find a need to disable efficient in combat healers as such attacking the healer becomes a priority. By having really good healing he draws agro....

I'm sorry I don't have much constructive to offer in terms of analyzing your proposed house rule. FWIW, I think Inspiration is one of the safest mechanics to tinker with. Advantage is already pretty easy to get in most situations, so it would take a rather generous Inspiration system to disrupt other areas of the game. Mechanically speaking, the proposal is fine. My issues are more from a...

Ah, spoken like a true philosopher, no hair may remain unsplit! ;) Its not that I don't actually share some of your disdain for Kant, I think he's overrated perhaps (and Hume is certainly an interesting figure in his own right, but if you are at that level you have many choices, Descartes, HEGEL!!!! etc. What distinguishes Kant is that he overturned the whole classically inspired system of...

Kobold Avenger, Honestly, PC half casters and enemy casters of any type benefit the most from the rule, but that's not really important. If you are deadest on changing the rule then I propose sprinkling in a few new abilities or items that grant PC's a way to force a concentration check. 1. Possibly a potion that when thrown functions like a tactical grenade and temporarily...

When in doubt, choose the less heavy-handed option. "Lose all your powers" is the most heavy-handed thing there is. I'm not even gonna call it a last resort; to me, it's no resort. I would flat-out kill a PC before doing that. As much as possible, I avoid policing how players choose to play their characters. The world reacts to their actions, sure, but I draw a red line around the character...

I have just uploaded Party Base to the downloads area. My group has recently acquired an old guard tower as a base of operations. It's a fixer-upper, so I made a short document with some guidelines on ways to fix it up. There is a really good "Stronghold Building" guide on DMsGuild:...
