I don't really have a strong opinion on the mechanic I suggested. As I said, I generally use other means to achieve the same end. I'm only addressing what I perceive as objections that are easily handled. I would say, like standard XP, the proposed house rule influences player behavior and thus character behavior, but that it needn't be the character's sole motivation or even the most...

Not really. D&D 5e's inspiration mechanic feels like a half-baked afterthought vomited last minute onto the game. As you say below, this is a fundamental mechanic of Fate's game play. It has bite. It is an integral part of the character. It is in the forefront and not an out-of-sight, out-of-mind background. In regards to "what about 5E inspiration?," you may enjoy reading Angry DM's article...

So how would you make Lilliputians and Brobdingnagians into PC races? Is it possible to make them into PC races? Part of my thinking on this is how the recent D&D Beyond video observed larger-than-medium creatures can create mechanical issues. That said, I think reskinning the storm giants should do for the Brobdingnagians? But what about the Lilliputian?

The few issues I had with Spelljammer had nothing to do with space fantasy. Most of it centered around the tone and their poor attempt at humor. The real problem with humor in a written medium that you'll be reading frequently is that the jokes grow stale and are no longer funny. This tendency is greatly exacerbated if the jokes aren't funny to begin with. Planescape, in my opinion, had a similar...

The 3 rounds (min) of restraint is intentional. I didn't want it to resemble Otto's Irresistible Dance too much because if that's what you want, then why not cast that spell? So I removed the action cost intentionally. Thematically, if you envision a spell turning you to stone, if it doesn't work instantly then it is visibly and slowly turning you to stone. In any movie I've ever seen, the slow...

You can tweak the number of encounters per day in a few ways without too much hassle. 1.) Increase the difficulty/challenge while decreasing the frequency. Have 3-4 deadly encounters instead of 6-8 moderate. For example. 2.) Limit the opportunities to rest by requiring restful space - in town, in a bed or at a sacred or holy place. 3.) Limit the effectiveness of rest itself. A Long Rest...

I think part of what needs to be defined is what's a campaign? Wikipedia states that for an RPG campaign, it's a connected series of battles, adventures, or scenarios played by the same character. In the body it states "usually played by the same set of characters." By this definition, in order for the campaign to continue, the characters need to remain involved. So yes, their motivations...

Well, I think that's only true to the extent that it was the early stages of RPGs and the game was built around the motivations the players had for their characters in Gygax's and Arneson's campaigns. The game was new, it had a level of re-playability that I don't think any other game had at the time, and the wonder and excitement came from working through the latest creative ideas of the DM, so...

Hawk Diesel I like your version of the spell, this definitely more potent. Some critiques: This pretty much guarantees ~3 round restraint, no matter the targets resistances or Saves. It could be a little too much to automatically inflict on an Ancient Wyrm/Orcus. This is also a good way to force a foe to burn through their Legendary Resistances, though they may not need to use them to...

If that were true then mirror image could protect you from ANY spell that targets you, like charm person, hex, slow etc. Then it would be a 6th level spell, not 1st level. There are spells that you need to 'aim' in a way like a sniper looking down the barrel of his rifle. If his cross-hairs are over the target when he squeezes the trigger then he hits; if the cross-hairs are not (the target...

My take on the problem is the inflexibility of the long rest definition. I think it would be better if the resource recovery was tied to how "restful" the long rest Maybe full recovery only can be gained at a safe tavern in town. Being on the road, having guards in place will reduce recovery. Having the rest interrupted by battle means no or only a small recovery. This way even a few encounters...

Experience points are also a motivation for players to do the things that net the characters XP, provided they care to some degree about character advancement. This works in tandem with whatever reasons a player might conceive for the character to also want to do those things. In a "6-8 encounters before a long rest" model, many encounters only exist to put pressure on character resources. From my own experience, you can do that without resorting to combat, through traps and natural hazards. When I plan for 6 encounters before a long rest, I'm inclined to use 2-3 combats (maybe one more if external aid is possible), 1-2 traps/natural hazards and think of something else...

I am wholeheartedly against forcing players to multiclass a level of Fighter just to get a Fighting Style. Some are motivated by the mechanical side of things, getting that awesome nth level spell or ability, by building a power-house of a character.
