I have had success with using one-shot adventures when the whole group cannot play. I would run a prison break gone bad and have most of the PCs get killed or recaptured. The main group gets a glimpse of how the prison works and some of the NPC. It is fun when the main group runs into some of the other PCs that were played in the one-shot when run by the DM. It is better when the main group...

Dain was hard on Jeovanna's heels, even if he was not as silent. But let the demon-gurgler know they were coming! Let it not be said that they were assassins who put knives in the backs of their enemies as they slept! Sliding up alongside Jeovanna, sword poised and torch aloft, Dain looked at the tiefling and his animal-servants with eyes that quickly grew enraged. Animal slaves? Vile...

Out Of The Abyss actually starts with a break from a Drow prison. As written, it's actually rather good, if potentially deadly, and very hard work for the DM due to the number of interactive NPCs. But you could definitely steal most of it for your needs.

Of course. I never championed concealing what kind of game is run. If my players wanted all dice rolls to stand, I would absolutely do that. My table is heavily story oriented, however, and are content with the rare fudging that they don't know about at the time. I may not have made this clear enough in my earlier posts. My objection comes from players who claim nobody should "cheat", no matter...

Strange question, didn't you say you used them in D&D, a game that assumes GM-worldbuilding to some degree? I have seen them used in many games, mostly D&D, though obviously not by name. If you mean a game that assumes some degree of GM-worldbuilding by default and includes "kickers" by default then the game that introduced the formalized concept, "Sorcerer" seems a good enough example. Does...

If you're looking for guidelines and principles that offer concrete advice, this is one source that can serve as a starting point. Overall, I'd say that a big step is questioning assumptions behind how you portray how you portray what is normal, what is human and what is civilized.

This is not a genuine contrast. Consider the Star Wars example linked to in this blog: that GM needed some sort of stats for TIE fighters. That's prep. When I turn up intendeding to run 4e, I bring my MMs/MV with me, or some stats for NPCs/monsters that I've written up. Because 4e likes maps for combat resolution, I'll often have some maps too. When I turned up to run Traveller, I had...

For hook, I meant once the players are already in Barovia. The hook in the AL modules is basically the same: mist roll in, poof you're in Barovia. I plan to use the CoS hardcover for the introduction where Barovia is the first stop once they arrive. After that, I would need to add leads so the players learn about Orasnou and have reason to go there.

As a player: to make choices that will express one's character and shape the outcome of whatever it is that is at stake in play. As a GM: to work with the players to establish whatever it is that is at stake in play, and then push the players (and thereby their PCs) in respect of it. Some people would rather have outcomes be determined by action resolution rather than dictated by the GM's...

Well looking at the text I have at hand here, which is not the black cover edition, it does not mention yards at all. I think it's safe to say this would be an error in the black cover text, not a rule. With D&D in particular one should never assume intent if aberrations in the books are more easily explained by bad writing or crappy editing. 2E does, it seems, still retain different...

I'm not sure how else to put this. If the check succeeds, the players goal for his/her PC is realised. If the aura-reading succeeds, the feather has a trait that is suitable for dealing with a balrog (from memory, I think the PC was looking for Resistant to Fire). If the scavenging check in the tower succeeds, the PC finds the mace he is searching for. If the Circles check succeeds, the PC meets...

You also gain telepathy (doesn't say how far) while morphed. I just went and read through the wiki on it, and I'm fairly certain you could duplicate it...

Abiding by the dice isn't required to have a good time by any means. Technically you can play games without them. It all depends on player expectations and what they want out of the experience. If the players are happy being the stars of their own drama series and don't care how that happens then everything is fine. If players are expecting a game that is theirs to either successfully conquer or...
