I realize the distinction you're making, and it's not a perfect example, perhaps, but to me, I would find a DM who said "wait, why is your fighter willing to take the hit from that gnoll....he doesn't know he has 76 HP and a tmost the gnoll can do 36" to be pretty much on par with the DM saying "Wait, how does your fighter know that trolls are vulnerable to fire?" Hereís another way to put it: a hypothetical Feat that could do the -5 to hit, +10 damage thing with any melee Attack (ignoring how overpowered that would be) could add 10 to the damage of an Unarmed Strike from a character with 8 Strength, even though the damage of their Unarmed Strike is 0. It could not add 10 to the damage of a shove or a grapple, because despite requiring the character to...

What I love about homebrew threads is the give and take and refining of rules that people want to implement into their games. And the mutual respect people afford each other, given their goal for finding the perfect solution. Brainstorming is about cooking up rough ideas, figuring out the how and why it may or may not work and then refining it to something beautiful that works for a person's...

I have a feeling it'll turn out to be Tilly, but I'm not sure why I think that. It could also be Stamets. They established his ability to perceive non-linear time, which could be a very useful talent for the Angel. Logically, it would make sense for them to be working through how Section 31 went from being a legitimate, if unconventional, arm of Starfleet in this era to the nigh-mythical...

But that's not what I'm saying. The DM doesn't have to provide the characters with knowledge that their players don't have in such a case. So if there's a new monster with weaknesses the players have no idea about, then unless the thing is meant to be something that the characters may have knowledge of in which case the DM could share it or could call for a roll, I'd play it out as is. This is...

That's pretty much what I was getting at, but with the caveat that the player still has to know any rule that might affect them. A wizard can't choose to ignore the grappling rules entirely, just because they don't plan on initiating a grapple, since someone may choose to grapple them against their will. That being said, I know plenty of groups had a social contract to ignore the possibility...

I don't know how many players are *introduced* to the game through electronic tools, and I would like to know how you come to that assessment. What evidence do you have for this?

Yeah, but if the OP is restricting levels to 4-7th, it means elite guards hired by Kings or wizards are all going to be about that level so you won't have that typical high-level discrepancy. You can have a small army of 2nd level fighters and it will be protection enough against an adventuring group.

Yeah, for the most part. There are plenty of games that have similar arcs. The zero to hero arc you describe is pretty particular to level progression games such as D&D. But I think the idea of a "hero" has enough flexibility to it to work in a variety of games. I tend to think of it in the literary sense of "protagonist" rather than the concept of someone who performs heroic deeds. Well,...

I don't see disarm as a big problem for important weapons. The winner of the battle generally gets the gear. Unless people are regularly getting into fights they can't win just to disarm their better equipped foe and then try to escape with their weapon (a high risk proposal) disarming doesn't invalidate having cool gear.

I would prefer a game where such a restriction was not in place. Could I handle such a restriction? Yes. But do I think it's a meaningful restriction based on sound logic? Not really. I play with the same group of friends I've always played with (for the most part), so we've periodically addressed concerns like these and decided what's best for the group. Early D&D was filled with weird and wild crossovers, like Murlyndís six-shooters, the whole of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks; heck, the DMG had rules for conversions between Boot Hill, Gamma World, and Gangbusters (I could be wrong on that last one). That being said, the world and game being played need to have the internal consistency and flexibility to handle that sort of thing. Putting a...

How is this not metagaming? I just think this is like basic metagaming that everybody would pretty much agree is metagaming. Again, it might vary by system. But if I were in a group and the GM said okay, you guys can't metagame stuff like knowing how to kill trolls. I'd say 'fair enough'. And if someone went to the mat like people are here, I'd regard them as being disruptive. I mean, it is a...

The rulebook just says that they should discuss things. But it also says the GMs word is final. I don't disagree that rulebooks say different things. I don't know why we are debating this point though as the relevant one is the section at the start of the text that strongly suggests discouragement of metagaming (again in the sense Maxperson is talking about). I don't have a hard time understanding Max's reasons for considering metagaming cheating. I simply disagree, and in the example of the troll and uncle (and therefore similar game situations where a player is involved in deciding what hi character does or does not know), I don't see how it can be considered metagaming. My character knows about trolls because of his uncle. If that is not...

Since you're not dealing with a god specifically, you could model the interaction on one of Thor's chums, or that robot daughter of Thanos, since they are more like divine agents.

My group is all-digital as far as the gaming side is concerned--there isn't a single book at the table, and only one of us uses a paper character sheet--but I still buy physical books when I want to...

Missing Page reference: p38 Footnote says "The cleric presented here selects only from the Good and Evil virtues, along with any other secrets which form part of her godís portfolio. Other virtues do exist (see the sidebar on page XX), but this career assumes only those two. For divine portfolios, see Appendix A."

Hey there! I've recently been homebrewing a lot of systems and lore related to Demons, Devils and Angels; and wanted to share some of it with the good people of En World! If you're interested in lore on Demonic Invasions, and a d10 table detailing catastrophes which might result from them... If you want a d30 table on the secrets a Devil or other malevolent extraplanar entity might know about...

I'm not sure how well it would work in this edition (I suspect you could find a way to make it work), but one thing I did in 4th Edition was I printed up a whole bunch of different cards that I would hand out to the players that they could use to gain some sort of effect, at which point it was expended. Card ideas for 5E: Gain Advantage on a Roll Impose Disadvantage on a Roll Add a Die...

I think that the disagreement here is that we want our RPG's to be realistic to actual life. However, with only dice, pencils, and paper, our GM's can only do so much to mirror life's complexities. We simply can not make a pen and paper game intricate enough to match the everyday laws occurring in our world. Besides, who really wants RPG's to be realistic, we want dragons, fire-balls, laser...

Important question: when will Spock shave off his beard? Since Anson Mount is only contracted for one year, I'm guessing Pike leaves at the end of this season. That'll be a shame, as I really like him. He's more Kirk than Kirk! What are your current prevailing theories? What's (who is) the Red Angel? Is Section 31 dead now? Their HQ is basically a tomb. I assume they have a few ships out...

I donít regard it as cheating. But regarding it as cheating is a thing, no matter how many crossbows you bring up. Obviously a crossbow is not secret info. Burning trolls by fire is more obviously a secret. This is painfully common. And it isnít hard to understand. You guys are using clever arguments to obscure his point (a point I donít even really agree with but think makes sense).

Even better! Um, hmm..... How long does it take for spoilers not to be an issue? Blake is only there for the first two seasons.

You seem to forget that a major issue with complexity is the time it takes to resolve actions. Even if I am not the one initiating a grapple, any time anything in the game grapples, I have to sit around waiting for the grapple to be resolved. In this way, a player's game experience is linked to the complexity of all rules used at the table, not just the ones they personally use.

Sure, 3.5e grappling is complicated. But, as you say, nothing happens in an RPG unless you make it happen. I have played entire 3.5e campaigns where the grappling rules never came up. The players in that campaign had no expectation to understand and apply the rules of the RPG that they never used. Having the potential to make something complicated does not mean the game has to be complicated....

Remember that, in 1e, how strongholds came only as the character got significant amounts of game-mechanical power? Trying to take their power was a risk, because they were powerful enough to personally clean the clocks of people who tried to take it away from them. And, typically, characters who were kings and rulers were high level NPCs, not schlubs. As a GM, you can have a low-level...

Some North Americans are familiar with Red Dwarf. A few of us were unfortunate enough to have seen the two separate attempts at Americanizing the series (one of which had Jane Leeves as Holly).
