Except explicitly not. Darksun defiles use the life force of plants, not magic from anywhere. It takes the life essence and then converts it to magic. It doesn't steal magic from plants and then use it. Having your life force taken hurts. Just for the sake of argument, though, let's assume that life force = magic. It would only do so for Darksun, as that world is the only one where...

Okay so a humanoid soul, essence of life, is a source of power which is valuable in the Nine Hells and elsewhere. A rock less so, because it doesn't have a soul, and therefore no source of power. But going back to the humanoid soul example, this reverts to whatever God creates (including life) is Godly (magical), hence the value in a humanoid soul. Therefore this position is creation is an...

I'd simply say "you catch a cold and feel miserable at any time except when it counts" That is - no mechanical penalties. Role-play your misery all you like but even a -1 is too severe for a common cold, and 5e doesn't really do mere -1s. In the choice between disadvantage and nothing, the choice is easy:...

Not saying other initiative/turn order systems are bad. This is a bit of an unusual situation. Times I've seen it, at least one bad guy was still awake.

Dragons in D&D can fly, although that would not be possible in the real world. Fighters in 5e can choose when to push themselves extra hard, knowing that if they burn their reserves now they won't get them back without a rest, which is not too different from how people in the real world can do that. But fighters in 5e are magical while dragon flight is not? I don't get it.

So we have the front who is going to bring up the rear other than that the middle positions are mostly irrelevant.

It does not make the world magical. Casting spells literally is draining the world of magic, defiling it so to speak. Why would you take damage from someone just drawing the magic to cast a spell if they were not taking the magic from you? Eureka, you are understanding it! And you did not even need to have a magic apple drop on your head either.

Sure, but again that was external magic used recklessly and it destroyed a good portion of the world. It didn't make the world magical. Obviously because every little thing is magical. See that kitten over there? It's a magic kitten! That pebble in the horses hoof? Must be a magic pebble of horse laming. The air is invisible! Must be magic.

How would you go about explaining what an atom was to someone in a DnD world? Not sure that they would necessarily believe that to be true when everyone already knows that the world is made out of the four Elements. Take Dark Sun as example of what happens when you use too much magic. If you were in a low magic setting then how would you know that the background magic levels were lower...

The ENnie winners haven't even been announced, and I've already received a prize: Modos 2 downloads have doubled! I am so pleased to know that (crossing fingers) 300 people have a copy of Modos 2 and are enjoying it even half as much as I do. If you have five spare minutes, please write a review here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?598637-Modos-2 I'm anticipating two new...

It's more like gravity affecting OTHER things, not that each thing with mass has a minuscule amount of gravity in it. When the game rules talk about magic, they talk about spells, and magical creature, and magical items. They don't say anything at all about magic being in every single atom, or even every creature or object. The reason for that is that it isn't in all of that. That's how you...

For some reason I thought you cast on the same ship you cast before (you even say in your post that focus fire on one ship is the way to go so we contend with only one crew). 20 + 35 damage should clear all or most of the first ship. Including wights and maybe one revenant.

Thats my point, if magic is like gravity then even the most "mundane" of items has it.

Even more likely that it was Hickman & Hickman (husband & wife) as this stuff is straight out of the original module - wich was an adaptation of a home game of theirs.

It lasts until the end of your next turn. Casting it the round before combat begins allows you some benefits for the first round if you charge in and attack - especially for a hexblade or a fighter type that took Magic Initiate. The best use of this I've seen was on a human variant monk that took hex, minor image and blade ward. She'd hex enemies from a distance, cast blade ward, and then...

Mindra continues to move closer to her friends as she fires another arrow. When she nears Liam she calls out to him. "How about we not set the whole valley on fire next time? That smoke will be seen for miles. And that's best case. Worst case we start a wild fire and burn down the town." Move 20' closer to Coriana and fire an arrow at whatever kobold is still standing. Probably K2? Short bow...

In the OD&D brown box, the introduction specifically says the rules are guidelines, and the word guidelines is underlined. The Holmes basic introduction has similar guidance. In the AD&D DMG it specifically says, “You do have every right to overrule the dice at any time if there is a particular course of events that you would like to have occur.” There are a few examples given and some...

Yeah. It's like gravity. It exists and exerts force on the mundane, but it doesn't turn the mundane into magic, at least not without a spell/ability specifically aimed at the piece of mundane to be enchanted.

Frankly, most of the "death" in my games has been accidental. Guy with 10HP gets hit a couple times and is brought down to 1 or 2HP. Then they get missed a bunch. Then they get crit on for like, a bazillion damage. Death saves don't even come into play. Not that I'm particularly fond of the death save system. As for monsters killing downed party members, I just make it clear up front...
