So maybe a follow-up question should be "What sorts of challenges or adventure structure lend themselves particular well to a duet game?"

Yea that works. Thanks :) What I've said (and is from the 2E version) is that they prefer arcane books/parchment to non-magical. For reference, I've said minutes because when an infested item is opened, they visible jump up to 10 feet. So players should know they are infected, and just have to get rid of them before too much damage is done. All that said, I think the way you've laid it...

Not really, no. There's a difference between lore that hints at potential stat info (skill check) and telling a player a monster's vulnerabilities outright (Hunter's Sense). Look back at my example – yes, the player who made the Religion check guessed that the wight was vulnerable to sunlight, but they had no idea about silver overcoming a wight's resistances. In fact, the party had a silver...

Just to flog that horse... iTunes has a feature that allows you to rip from CD. So a good parallel in D&DB would be a feature that lets you scan in content from your books using OCR. Well, really, it would make more sense to just do image recognition to confirm what it is, then just populate the content from storage. Given that iTunes used the Gracenote music database to recognize CDs* in...

Anything besides the low defenses (AC and HP) that didn't work for you? I am reviewing "greater mummies" from past editions as a revise the Mummy Lord (Mummy, Pharaoh in my version), but other than the oddly low HP the Mummy Lord has some interesting abilities that I would think would make it an interesting fight.

5-foot step over the horse isn't an issue: Nimble Moves: You can move across a single obstacle with ease. Benefit: Whenever you move, you may move through 5 feet of difficult terrain each round as if it were normal terrain. This feat allows you to take a 5-foot step into difficult terrain. Zyara didn't expect the knight to fall away from her. She'd deal with him later. She strikes the down...

Well, the way I see it, he only gets to soft fall when you target the horse. If you go for him, it's against his CMD. And I missed one important thing: his own trip happens at the same attack group as the horse's trip. Rule-wise I thing Zyara basically tried to unhorse the rider as the horse fell. I had it backwards when I thought I had to land the rider and then apply Zyara's attack.

I don't know what pace you have in mind, whether it's minutes, hours or days you're thinking of, so I'm just gonna talk in hours (and you can sub in minutes or days as you prefer). Would it work if you went more abstract, and said the worms fed on a spell for a number of hours equal to the spell level, then moved onto the next spell? You could even allow it down by saying it took a number of...

Also, re-read the post. I had considered the last attack as out of reach since he soft falls out of Zyara's range. But it makes sense to roll a trip against him, since the actions happen in sequence. So Zyara crits him bringing him down. But you could just consider the CMD against your roll at that level - no need for me to roll a defense, since he couldn't escape the trip on him, only the...

All I will say on the subject is that horror fiction and the medium has used real world atrocities and villainy as a foundation to be represented as more morally "monstrous" since before it became a genre. For many of its earliest days in myth, folklore and boogeymen tales, it was quite typical for a real crime or threat to be portrayed not as the work of men vs men but of monsters. Even as...

And I'd even consider this RAW and RAI because Homebrewing new magic items is...

I find that they a) expand in-character interactions, b) allow you to go in depth in the story, and c) offer more flexibility with the character. Basically, by focusing on one person, the spot light can always be on them, and the GM does not have to juggle tying in multiple back stories/ensure the spot light is on everyone equally. Of...

Of course, it's significantly easier to add new songs than it is to add new D&D stuff, so it doesn't really seem like the same.

Perhaps the existence of the features should be more a guide to the DC? It might be that the information a 7th level fighter automatically gets after one minute observing and interacting with a creature, can be gained by character with Nature, provided they take a minute and succeed on a check against a Hard or Very Hard DC. Is that a reasonable example?

Oh, and let's not forget that Solars if taken on their own without any strings attached in straight up combat in an open space will kill anything. Anything.

Angis vs Hobgoblin Thugs As Tommi slipped away from him and Dandin slipped past, Angis took a position at the top of the stairs and threw a hand-axe at a thuggish-looking hobgoblin. The brute was terribly wounded by the axe, but it kept coming at him anyway with a wild look in its eyes. Angis was swiftly ganged up on by two hobgoblins, and they took turns beating on him with spiked maces. ...

Do you mean that the class features I quoted from WotC official publications are cheating players out of one of the greatest parts of the game?

Hiya! "Old Skool" - Whatever the Player remembers or thinks he does about the monster, his PC can use...if the Player wants to (e.g., Roleplaying considerations, for example). I find this way of playing to be MUCH more satisfying than rolling dice and comparing numbers. With the Old Skool way, the Players and the DM have a sense of pride and accomplishment. The more a Player plays in a DM's...

The new Mark of Passage seems like it could have some value on a grappling build, specifically the BJJ Master build's Spikedragging. You get the "ignore difficult terrain on a dash" and +10 ft speed of Mobile (somewhat making up for the loss of the variant human feat), and you get +1d4 to your Athletics checks, stacking with Guidance and advantage. What would otherwise be the highlight of the...

Dandin & Tommi vs General Shorgg Dandin mocked the Hobgoblin General and then ran back down the stairs as his friends Tommi and Angis passed him. The general was a disciplined soldier, and he ignored the halfling as he calmly walked over to a crate where he'd left a large shield, and he patiently strapped it to his arm. Tommi slipped past the two hobgoblin thugs as they chased Dandin and...

It’s a directly relevant reply. You can manually add the songs to your iTunes. You can do the same in DDB. Neither just gives them to you for free just because you bought a cd.

That seems like hair splitting. You don’t have to buy the same music again to get it on another device via iTunes (if you purchased the original CD and you ripped it, illegally originally remember (at least in the UK: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/12021607/Why-in-2015-is-ripping-CDs-still-illegal-in-the-UK.html)?, and added it to your iTunes library)

Good suggestions. I was considering having the Earth infusion produce some kind of rocky missile weapon - maybe throw boulders like a mini catapult. It's actually going to be close to that. Officially, Eberron airships can only be piloted by members of House Lyrandar, whose dragonmark allows them to command the bound elemental. Since there are no dragonmarked characters in the party, and...

okay, Kaylyn casts Dissonant Whispers against the undamaged guard. the spell info says the guard must make a Wisdom saving throw. I don't know how that works. I think my dc save is involved? if so, it's 15. if he fails the save, he takes 4d6 damage and must move away from me with his reaction. if he succeeds, he takes half damage and doesn't have to go away.

The real problem is that a pike doesn't work as a melee weapon. The 5E pike, mechanically, i just a really long spear. If it had the correct size ratio, it would have an attack area of 10-15 feet out, but be unable to strike closer than that, similar to the way 3E did reach weapons. Having just the standard Reach property means that it shouldn't really be 12'-18' long. Even if we ignore that,...

I'd change insightful to proficiency with Insight and advantage on Investigation checks to discern illusions. Not for balance reasons, but because the idea of getting proficiency in one aspect of a skill irrationally irks me. (And though I'd also normally be against racial features granting advantage on skill checks, this particular use is kinda more like a saving throw, and the gnome gets...
