Some days that describes real-world driving in this town... I'm not sure where you're getting "every attack has a 5% chance of ignoring h.p. entirely". More likely it'd be "once every now and then a particular situation might arise where every attack ". Vitality points are a great idea, having crits go straight to them (except in unusual cases) is not. How can you not sometimes end up...

Cliché "it's all escapism in the end" line. Most systems, even the ones with brutal, graphically descriptive combat use abstraction in various places. In most games, except some that are more for over the top, I'd say that you're finding the gaps once it comes to metal armor. OK, a thin thrusting blade might make it between a link of mail, but you also have to be using a pretty thin blade....

A lot of RPGs don't seem to account for the fact that, in the real world, you would have to use different types of weapons to deal with foes wearing different types of armors (i.e. using a knife blade to stab a knight wearing plate armor at a vunerable joint, rather than hitting him with a mace, say). Are there any game systems that treat this (semi) realistically?

That's certainly one way of looking at it. I guess it boils down to how much concentration/focus/trance is required in the fiction to cast the original spell and thus whether said caster is - or even could be - aware of a counterspell attempt. What makes me really shudder is the thought of there not just being two casters involved, but three or four or eight all flinging counterspells at...

If it's a strong class system, like AD&D, then the class element provides a convenient label that makes it easier to understand the character concept. A ranger is a well-defined concept, as is a wizard. As you move further away from a strong class system, the class defines less of the character concept. A ranger in 5E, for example, is different from a ranger in 1E. In 5E, you need to take the...

I think this change makes the feat much more circumstantial. It's either strictly better or strictly worse than increasing your Con score depending on whether your current Con is even or odd. That's generally not great for balance as it can noticeably penalize you for not using an optimal ability score spread.

Let the player play his character, or you won't get awesome stories about dancing frogs.

I like this but at the same time I think that you will add quite a bit of overhead to the game by discretizing actions this way. I can see it work with the right players but don't forget that you, as a DM, also have to keep track of all your NPCs. Imagine a large battle. In any case, if you ever test it out, let me know how it played out.

:) All in all, the opera seems to be a big success though not everyone in the audience seems to have completely grasped the meaning of the story. Carlyle congratulates Auryn on this perfect premiere, even if she's a bit skeptical herself, finding flaws in her performance where no one else would see them. She explains that she's still far from the levels of Navras or even Vekesh and even...

I’m very confused. You mentioned the level 6 ability but talk here a lot about the level 2 ability. I made my comment about the level 6 ability. Why are you telling me how good the level 2 ability is when I questioned how good the level 6 ability is?

Well, I just spent a couple hours reading through this. It is an interesting idea, but not for me personally. I have an idea from the Greyhawk system but it would place a lot of the responsibility on us players, which could be a good thing. I'll post more about it later when I have time.

I was going for a more broadly applicable philosophy, but I'll take it. It certainly meets the needs of addressing this most recent issue in most details. Is it fair to extrapolate that to an understanding that it is not "politics" to discuss how the community should best create and maintain an environment safe from harassment and abuse? Part of the reason I brought this question up is that it...

Did all those characters start at level 1 (except for the replacement cleric)? If so, I'm impressed your parties got that far without anyone (permanently) dying (except for the one with the replacement cleric)

    1. Free Basic rules available online. The text that is in the Basic rules is identical to that of the Players Handbook (it's a straight copy and paste from about 1/3 of the PHB), which is likely the next thing to get. Common mistakes? It's been so long... Ummm... players forgetting what their PCs can do, maybe. Dice are all basically the same except that Game Science dice are the best dice...

I'll note that level 17+ assassins do get (approximately) 4x damage. But, yeah, otherwise the above are fair observations. And at the same time I can understand and even agree with WotC's apparently intentional decision to not use subclasses to increase rogue DPR.

    > Interestingly, when introducing kids to roleplaying, I have found that no matter what system you start with, they start thinking in terms of aspects and have to be trained if the system uses skills. As an example, I ran D&D for some kids and a typical conversation would go: I (and my son) have run a few different systems for the church youth group. I've been running BIG EYES SMALL...

Master Archetypes: As character development continues to progress, greater diversity in character types will naturally occur, especially with more experience in playing, so as to generate a party of characters with enough skills and abilities to best handle any encountered situation. The following tables provide data for some suggested patterns of character development. These examples are by no...

The character retains his or her alignment and personality and, since mental ability scores have no meaningful effect on what the player chooses to do unless the player decides they do, the player ultimately decides what the toad will do which could reasonably include impaling itself on the nearest ally's sword so as to end the spell. If the battle takes place on land, I agree with the idea...

It's a struggle, though, because no issue, and especially not one as large and thorny as this, exists in a vacuum. It's hard to separate what has happened recently in our hobby re: Zak S & Mentzer with trends in the broader culture. When it only takes a few well-meaning responses to intentionally derailing posts to shut a thread down, how do we continue the conversation?

In my gaming group we use the variant where players can give each other inspiration. If one player awards more than one point in a session, the DM gets one too, and the DM's points stack. This worked pretty well for us: once per evening, each player gets to "pay a compliment" to another and to make a roll with advantage when they normally wouldn't, which can be a lifesaver. This also means that...

By my (grey-specked) beard, indeed! But don't forget the 1d4 HP! Though, to be fair, even back then I would've allowed the poor soul that rolled a 1 for HP to re-roll. You are absolutely right, that it is more than just the rules set, but a conglomeration of place and time. It’s about how we struggled through the rules sometimes (or often), about the books and movies and art and videogames...
