A campaign in which the DM wants one of the characters to quit the game but doesn't want to tell him to leave, and so tries to make the game unfun for him by deliberately targeting his character and asking the rest of the party not to help them behind their back.

Using the dice pool to power maneuver and combos worked fine. It was what I actually expected way back in the play test. I just wanted other, more flavorful ways of recharging the pool beside a flat X per turn. At very least, make it recharge at the end of your turn, so you have them available for off-turn actions, and can spend the left overs on your turn.

I added one level of exhaustion for each time a PC dropped to zero HP. As it turned out, no PC every dropped to 0 HP more than once per long rest, and that's with long rests of one week. PCs routinely dropped to 0 HP, don't get me wrong. It's just either by random chance or good play, it never happened more than once. I did have an NPC (a war dog fluffed as a barbarian) who dropped twice to 0 HP,...

Yeah, 1e was excessively harsh (and my group ignored that crap). That'd be page 75 on the non-revised version. I completely forgot about the stumbly condition after healing from less than 0 hp (it's been since the mid nineties that I last played 2e).

In earlier editions there was a common issue of characters having a "Christmas Tree" of glowing magic items. The limit of three was directly put in to address this point, which powerful items need attunement so a character will only have a few of them. This addressed a pervasive problem in earlier editions. I wouldn't want to change that until I had an alternate way to limit items a...

You could leave the long reast alone, and just have Con bonus (minimum 0) + Level hit point return with a long rest (as well as Hit Dice). That'd be a compromise between full healing and the 1hp/night in AD&D.

I just wanted to add an update to demonstrate using PowerPoint for dungeons. I've attached a zip with two files. The first, "map", has two dungeon complexes. The first is a labyrinth lair and I can't let the players see the map as a whole, so I made slides containing the four encounter areas only with monsters hidden behind identical shapes. You deleted the shapes "in front" or on top, and...

One thing I'll admit to not liking is the attunement limitation. the attunement requirement for some items is nice in that it's a logical way to prevent someone from just grabbing a newly acquired magical doodad and having full use. In some cases it makes perfect sense. But limiting it to three total?

The difference here is that the ammunition property on weapons makes drawing the arrow explicitly part of the attack, so RAW drawing an arrow isn't the same as drawing a javelin.

I imagine there will be very little difference. Having multiple encounters in a day will usually allow for short rests before most, if not all encounters. Having multiple encounters over a week will be just about the same, but will virtually guarantee short rests before all encounters.

This is entirely by RAW. But just as this should also hold true for shooting arrows, many DMs handwave drawing multiple things from the same quiver/bandoleer at once. So ask your DM if they have problems with drawing and tossing multiple javelins. A house rule, but one so common that no one even thinks about it in my neck of the woods.

Some of the things I'm not a fan of in 5e. Dex to Damage. That, without magic, small sized PC/NPCs such as halflings, gnomes, goblins, etc can reach a 20 str. No ability score minimum for classes. Full hit point recovery on long rest. Attunement to few. Skills need work. Spell casting reduction for balance.

I'd be very leery of using one of my limited warlock spells known on Catnap until high level. Catnap can only work on a particular character once per long rest, so it's not like the warlock can do it on themself to regain slots more than once per day. Maybe at 11th, when you have 3 slots so you could cast 2 and have one for this once per day, and you have a good number of spells known. But in...

My list is going to be a little different, as I started playing DnD with 3rd edition, and have little use for "old school". 1. 1 hour short rests. I get that 5 minutes from 4e was too short ... but I generally run a short rest at 15-30 minutes. Warlocks, Monks and other classes feel a little too handicapped by that length of rest. Also, I wish other classes also had more short rest resources....

I think the solution to that is to give druids and clerics a bit more oomph with weapons. Granting them a second attack at say, 6th level would largely solve the problem. Then remove direct damage cantrips or at least remove the scaling. Possibly add more cantrips like Shillelagh that directly add to weapon damage might help as well.

It's funny, but also technical. They named the URLs for Vecna and Ioun. Vecna for the character builder and Ioun for the compendium. If you look at the sources for the files, that's where they go. Such as, 'http://vecna.wizards.com/blahblahblah' or whatever. It won't be in the URL bar in your browser, but internally, that's where its looking.

They would, until your martial arts die reaches d10 (late-game enough that most campaigns never get there). But only by a point per attack, so 2-4 per round times whatever your hit percentage is. Which I wouldn't really call a game-breaking amount. The bigger issue would be: if you allowed two-handed weapons, there would be no reason not to use one. I'm not sure if that's more of a problem or...

If you are a cleric that gains potent cantrip then it is almost always better to use a cantrip. Then we come to the druid. They don't get any...

You can be at 1 hp and you're as physically able as if you were at full hit points. You could be at -4, and with some minor healing magic you pop up with no ill effects. I can't answer for others, but for me it's because if you are one death save from dying, you shouldn't be able to run around 8 hours later like nothing ever happened without some serious magic healing involved. If you CAN just run around like nothing happened after only 8 hours of rest, then there was absolutely nothing that should have required even a single death save.

It is any beast of the same CR as the target. If the target doesn't have a CR then you use target's level.

5E was playtested and designed to appeal to the widest base possible. While this means a lot of people are going to love it, there will always be people who do not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, and you should not feel the need to apologize to internet strangers just because you don't fit the common mold. Unlike others who might have just avoided 5E completely, you gave it a...

I get it. I actually like 5E but not nearly as much as Basic. I don't think any edition has ever topped the Red Box, for me. Fortunately, old school D&D is immensely popular, these days, and if you put some effort into it you can easily start up a game of your preference. I'm running / playing in 3 old school games now (and only one 5E game). Maybe it depends on where you are, but Roll20...

I think an awesome way to accomplish this, if the OP has them or is willing to buy them, would be to give the player the Volo books from 2nd edition. Most of the fluff will still be true, and any mechanics will be wrong, but often close to right.

TerraDave started a thread Buff Polymorph
As far as I can tell, for buffing use, this spell allows the caster to turn the target (including self) into either: 1) Any critter of the same CR as that targets level. 2) A creature the caster is familiar with into a comparable CR (which is normally lower then level). So, which one? And how has buffing polymorphs actually worked in play?

Once dispersed Shendra takes a leisurely stroll through the Circle while searching for the appropriate vendors. Clothiers, tailors, and whoever might have a mix of goods for sale. She is initially met with disappointment but while thumbing through some dresses in a mobile wardrobe a swath of rich red fabric catches her eye. Sendra gently pulls the other items to the side so that she may get a...

Well, it would be d8+stat, and, that's all it needs to be better than a cantrip from a 17t level caster. IOW, the spell works as written and is better than a cantrip at all levels. Again, what's the problem? Oh, and let's not forget that clerics get virtually no damaging spells. Very, very few. Their cantrips are their primary source of damage, much like a warlock. Druids fare a bit...

I love 5e. I still look for something better something different. Something old or new rules light or heavy. I would play any edition happily. If I am being honest I never used all the rules or used them correctly anyway(misread, unread or apathy). I really just go by feel. There are probably going to be players that cut their teeth on 5e that will love 1e if you don’t have a group now there’s...

I tend to allow the PCs to have most of the player knowledge. When 5e came out, I allowed the cleric to know that you needed magic weapons to hit some of the undead or another PC to know that gargoyles needed magic to hit it, or trolls need fire to destroy. I figure that if you grew up in the world or trained to adventure you would know some of the basic things you would encounter in the first...

Given warlocks' limited spell selection and spell slots, would it really be worth having the spell? In order to gain the ability to take a short rest in 10 minutes you're giving up one spell slot and one known spell. It seems like a better option for casters with a more generous allotment of spells known, who find themselves in a party that runs heavily towards warlocks and monks.

Oh, I definitely believe it. One of the things I really like about 5e is how it shed 3rd and 4th edition's poorer innovations and kept the good stuff. And even 1st and 2nd's. It's kinda like a reboot of the whole AD&D franchise, but without Chris Pine . . . . . . I think I lost the thread of the thoughts.

The adventure centres on the exploration of a maze-like giant ant colony located near...

As far as I can tell - you haven't actually asked a question. Are you posting just to inform the community or do you want some feedback? Also, your pest is next to impossible to read if one has (like me) a black background. If you remove formatting from your text (the AxA symbol , 2nd from the left in the edit toolbar), everyone can read it just fine.
