I'd keep A, and use the storm in B as an encounter in and of itself. You can have the storm be a danger that they have to face and have them act appropriately to protect themselves and save the ship.

"Hello!" Metea called back. "Your dog is a fine beast!" She was clearly greatly enjoying appearing like a scary demon mage, with Magaw perched proudly on the top of her walking stick. Metea was not even trying to hide that fact. And maybe in a dark tavern or spooky cave she would've turned up the theatrics even more... but it seemed silly to try while the sun was shining. Of course, there was...

Yes, but I think the answer is simply that you don't need to make nearly that much an effort with a Paladin. You get everything you need for very impressive devastation already from the start. It's easy to come across as OP with a Paladin: good offense and great defense, best saves, a bit of healing and divination, and even a little general magic. Then on top of that you add incredibly...

Are you familiar with Mike Mearls's Iron Heroes book that he did as part of Monte Cook's Malhavoc Press? It was just a heavy Sword and Sorcery game with a lot of mundane classes and only one spellcaster*: the Arcanist. * At least until a Companion released the Spiritualist. I'm fairly certain that this was the book that got Mearls the job at WotC too.

Perhaps the simplest example is Magic Missile. (I had every other PC and King appear as ghostly apparitions, rather than outright invisible as the regular rules for ethereal characters suggest. So I had the "powers that be" insist on exactly that; a prophecy or mythal that forces anyone approaching the amphitheater to face it alone. I described how your companions in the party start to fade away as you get closer to the area where the dinosaur roams. Essentially, from your hero's...

Or you could make medium armor 16+dex(max +1). It would still make it 17 max, but it would not tax str characters on dex score too much. Also I would use negative dex modifier for heavy armor AC calculation to punish dumping dex. you could lower str req to 12 and 14. Odd ability scores just iritate people :p

I think a skill system can handle this pretty well. The key feature of skill resolution rather than spell resolution that Hussar is pointing to is (i) the need to engage the fiction in action declaration and resolution, and (ii) the lack of auto-success. You can get those features while allowing high level PCs to do things with their skills that are superhuman in capability.

They all tend to approach resolution in a fairly granular, "Did my attempt to do that work?" fashion. Indeed. As a hater, here's my summary: if you want to play World of Warcraft, but you don't have a computer, then 4E D&D is the closest approximation. If you want to play Magic the Gathering, but all your friends would rather play a TRPG, then 4E D&D is the compromise.

If, in your setting, people only ever charge at each other, then you don't need AoO. If anyone ever turns and runs away, then either you want fleeing to reliably result in successfully ending contact, which is very different from real life; or you will want some version of AoO.

@mrpopstar, I like your system here. Some other thoughts when I think about it. • Make naked human Base AC 8 • Helmet +2 AC ( → AC 10) So a helmet works mechanically similar to a shield. This is a simple method to account for the importance of a helmet in combat. So that, in reallife, even someone in ‘light armor’ like a cloth gambeson should be wearing a metal helmet.

It's not so much that it's more complicated, as it is that the complexity is less useful. Rolling 1d20, or 3d6, is a way of getting a number between one and twenty (give or take) in order to determine binary pass/fail. Using 3d6 rather than 1d20 is slightly more complicated, and you have somewhat more control over the results. (Which is a perfectly reasonable trade-off, as far as game design...

You have to plan how and when and where to make the best use of a ritual. You can't just fly by the seat of your pants and cast whatever spell you need to save your ass. I have never really cared for the high magic aspect of D&D, especially once you get past...

First it manifested itself as a series of bizarre and spooky events. But eventually they came to understand the phenomenon, and started testing the rules, which uncovered even more spooky things in the process.

For example, the character sheet will have a space for your equipped weapon that reads: 1d8+1 damage. So you know you need to roll a D8.
