Which is the fundamental flaw of Bounded Accuracy, and there's no good way of resolving it within a d20 resolution system. The Advantage mechanic, which can help here, only does so by temporarily shifting the game from d20-resolution to dice-pool resolution. That gives me an idea for a system hack, where everything was just down to an ability check, but proficiency and expertise each added...

Let me ask a question since dictate has multiple meanings. At your tables as a player is it your understanding that after you are done with your background dictation the GM then has to approve the character for plsy in the game and might just say "nope" (hopefully with some explanation as to why its not acceptable)? Or is it your understanding that in dictating you background the gm must...

No, it's not. Obviously the DM at a table can rule that it is, and he can DM for an empty table, but that is not an argument that would find much traction in the overall popular culture of D&D. Fluff text is just that, fluff. It provides an example of what a typical example of someone who is part of the class would be like. The idea that a high priest can demand your cleric to obey... A) Mythology Route: The Banshee heralds imminent death of a particular bloodline with her singing, and the party's efforts to liberate her will have no significance as she's singular in existence and purpose (not all dead want to...

Maybe being eco-conscious is an important aspect of their chsracter and since not having a car is big for lowering carbon footprint, they turn it down. It seems to me that while 5e is a better game for the likes of Critical Role, an actual tabletop "sport" would benefit from something more like Pathfinder or 4E. There's too much wiggle room in 5e for impartiality in the ref/GM. Unless -- and oh my God I hope they are doing this -- it's more like the WWE. That'd be amazing.

There's some debate on it. To the best of my interpretation, it should be impossible to sneak past someone who is looking at the open space you are trying to pass through. If the BBEG is in a room that only has one entrance, and someone is looking at that entrance, then surprise is ruined when anyone tries to enter the room. Out of combat, the rules for surprise are supposed to model sneaking...

I don't see any ambiguity. If you have a class ablity that lets you use a weapon as a focus, you are NOT using it as a weapon. You are waving it around in the air like a wand. It's like using a longbow as a walking stick. You can use it like that, but bracers of archery don't give you a bonus to your ability to walk up a hill.

How's it any different from them dictating the rest of their character's background?

I have been known to call fights when they're particularly lopsided and the conclusion can't easily be changed. It generally requires the outclassed NPCs to be unable to take a PC down with their remaining abilities before I'll do it.

A couple of times when the party has turned undead which are now cowering, I've just called the fight after a round or two because it's literally just hacking apart zombies until they stop moving at that point. Basically, if there is no chance the party will take further damage or need to spend further resources, it's over but the narration.

Yes but you're glossing over the fact that the player turned it down which I would assume means they want to play out the challenges associated with not having reliable "backgrounded" transportation. Which is fine and will give that player totally different challenges, adventures and perspectives from the one who did take it... Now if that's not the case why would they turn it down?

I guess that begs the question of whether the patron is an aspect of the character or an aspect of the DM's world? I would say the latter and thus wonder why the player would get to dictate that... don't get me wrong his character can ignore, avoid and foil the demands and plots of said patron whenever and however he wants but this is for all intents and purposes a piece of the world/NPC and the...

I'm stuck with the name. Dabbler sounds like it was going to be more of another class and less magic. Something with half casting, maybe a thief or fighter build. I'm not sure on a new name though. :) I too think that the Always Prepared feature should be moved to 6th level. Maybe at 2nd level the person can take a cantrip from any class list.

What purpose does any skill challenge serve? Their primary role is to provide a framework to determine success/failure/adjudicate altered fictional position using a formal structure as opposed to winging it. They also allow substantially more abstraction for the DM than a more traditional adventure design. Both these features help separate design from adjudication and simplify improv. What I...

The "have your attacks rolled ahead of time" is a simple way to do it. If you use laptops you can also have a simple excel that just does that rolling for you, so you can just declare the attack roll and damage, and then rinse and repeat.

I've been in leadership management in one form or another for decades. It has been unequivocally proven many times that the more diverse workforce you have, the better the product and more efficient the team. In some studies, by an increase of up to 20%. So all else equal in applicant qualifications, hiring the diverse choice is the better choice. And as long as people keep questioning the...

On the contrary, none of them should have to deal with worrying about "how do I get there" unless it suddenly becomes relevant.

Vik, Veera, and Quill readily agree and start to work immediately. The cabin is on the inland side of the village at the northwestern most edge. It is comprised of three room, a main plus two smaller ones on each side. There is a covered porch on the front of the structure with the main entrance. There is another exit at the back of the main room that is covered with a draped fabric. It leads to...

Because it’s a serious issue. There’s an epidemic of hate online aimed at female creatives that has ripped through video games, movies, and comic books. It’s hit on RPGs a few times and we don’t need that getting worse. And we certainly don’t need to joke about it like the poor treatment of women gamers in the industry and gaming tables is some kind of laughing matter. You literally...

I make all of my rolls in front of the players and let the dice fall where they may. Good or bad, if you die you die. I never fudge a roll for good or ill, but I started playing WAAYYY back in 1982 and back then we did things a little differently. I do let new players know what the deal is before they play though, I figure that's only fair. But it works both ways, I also don't penalize them if...

What about if it's a final boss fight? I'd be reluctant then as that would kind of cheapen it in my mind. That said, if they already killed the actually final boss guy and just his minions were left I may call it.

Color me confused but a core concept should be something fairly prominent for the character - not really something to be backgrounded. And that means it should be available for complications. If being the motorcyle guy is your core concept, then it should account for something more than just getting from point A to point B. Captain America is a shield guy, but he doesn't use it just for looking...
