Very interesting. That assuages most of what makes me hesitant to purchase the product. I wonder how hard it would be to train followers in magical stuff, but that’s gonna be super campaign and setting specific. WRT MC: That’s fair, he seems like a pretty smart guy, and a lot of people I admire seem to admire him. I guess sometimes ya just don’t like someone, and as long as I don’t find...

I am interested in critiques of this fun cavalier idea I an toying with. The idea is to use a small race (halfling or gnome) and instead of using a beast as a mount, my main fighting tactic will be to immediately try to climb on top of a large enemy and use them as a mount until I've killed them and moved on to the next one. Obviously this will require some coordination with the GM since I doubt...

Obviously I mean: roll with '2'-'9' replaced by '10', or don't roll and get a '10'. Your description makes the entire ability go away. Had this actually been a reasonably common case, I might not have bothered with a houserule. As this thread amply shows, that's not the main impact in practice. The main practical impact is that rolls lose any excitement or risk. By making 1 autofail...

Missile fire - sure, but that's still mostly fighters and other melee types. Spell fire - yes, but spellcasters tend to have plenty of other options -if the fumble system is harsh, a spell caster can resort to any number of other spells, fighters can't they can either attack with a roll or attack with a roll. While other classes wade into melee - it's explicitly the martial characters role...

The largest was a 13-person group I played in during the early 3.0 D&D era -- I did not envy that poor DM. Largest group I've ever DMed for was maybe 8 people? It was a bit of a slog. Init tracker index cards helped immensely, it's why I still use that method to keep track of initiative at the table today. I tend to agree with that line of thought, but I have long been unable to think of a good reason for sorcerers to not get any conjure monster spells, so that is what I focused on. I hadn't thought of extend spell. The solution to that would be give the sorcerer access to conjure elemental and conjure fey, and then errata those spells so if the caster loses concentration, the angry monster gets...

Just to clarify, my speculation is not that 5E will be the last edition because D&D will fold anytime in the foreseeable future, but because it may have achieved evergreen status and any future "editions" will likely only be minor tweaks and cosmetic changes. But I'm also implying a kind of societal event horizon beyond which it is impossible to see. We can speculate that the next 10-20 years...

I wish they would either make it more simple or more complicated. Either make each weapon individual with certain strengths like way BECMI mastery worked, or make them generic and the weapon type just flavor. Either their should be tradeoffs for each weapon, or there should be simple 'builder system' where you take a base damage die, add a few properties, then call it whatever you want.

Yeah, I generally really dislike chosen numbers vs ones that link to character in some way. Make it Tier. Make it Con Mod. Make it Tier + ConMod and reduce it by one every death. With "races" like say death saves, it's kinda ok since you are setting a pace, but for most things... link it to character.

IMO it's going to depend a lot on the type of campaign. If you're pretty much just running published adventures tied together with a bit of backstory, then there's not a lot to coordinate - especially if you're doing something like "We're going to do some starter stuff, then run Dungeon of the Mad Mage until 20th level." You have to coordinate schedules and such, but the DMs aren't really doing...

Its the armor & weapons table for me too. Mostly the sameness of the weapons table - a long sword and battle axe are essentially the same thing - 1d8/1d10 versatile, slashing weapons. Gimme a reason to choose one over the other! I don't want one to be superior, just one is better at something and the other some other advantage.

Hmm. I have lots of little nitpicks about 5E, but most of them rarely come up at the table. However, I can think of two that have caused me significant headaches: Monster design, particularly in the core books. CRs are unreliable to the point of uselessness, and far too many monsters are just sacks of hit points. It's a huge step back from 4E, which for all its faults was very good at...

As I said originally, you can't make that bonus action attack on the first round anyway, unless you take the Dual Wielder feat. You can draw one weapon for free on a turn without that feat. So you're not even giving up damage now. You're adding damage to subsequent turns and not excluding any chances for Divine Smites on the first turn.

The problem with making the player choose: it turns certain success into likely failure (say DC is 20 and the player has a +12, they auto succeed with reliable talent, but if they roll there's a 45% chance of failure). Same problem the other...

Shadow sorcerer would have benefited from origin bonus spells. Arms of Hadar, Evard's Black Tentacles, and Hunger of Hadar seem particularly good for someone using the darkness. I thought about summon greater demon (for shadow demons, naturally), but I think they are really trying to limit "twin magic+summon/conjure/call" spells (I think conjure celestial is okay with them because it is a high...

OK, so, it turns out that the PHB (nor any other D&D book) didn't make the top 100 on Amazon in books in 2014 or 2105. D&D appears in the top 100 for the first time on an annual basis in 2016, when the PHB hits #92, behind "Dragons Love Tacos" and ahead of "The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book: Boil Ice, Float Water, Measure Gravity-Challenge the World Around You!" ...

Most likely, yes. Until D&D profits start to show significant decline, they’ll probably go the Chaossium route of occasionally releasing new editions that are minor updates to what is largely the same system.

Obviously, but D&D is doing to well right now for it to be reasonable to assume 5e will be the final edition in the sense of being the most current edition at the time D&D folds. Heck, even if D&D folded, someone would buy the IP, or license it, or WotC would buy it. Nothing short of the collapse of the RPG industry is going to bring about the final edition of D&D, which will happen eventually,...

But in the spirit of the thread, my most frustrating quirk: attunement three slots. It gets to me cause I have a hard time getting past "Why three?". "Who's enforcing this limit?" etc. Sure, I am a creative person.... "You may attune three items because magic is based on the trinity of existence, mind, soul, body." "To become one with an item, you must dedicate a part of your soul...

In the tree scene, a pair of squirrels begin to chase one a another around a tree. The image on the left wall changes but appears almost the same. Everyone notices that a pattern on the floor illuminates as well. The pattern displays once then extinguishes. The image on the...

Yes. As written, in many cases (if not all of them) Reliable Talent makes all twenty outcomes of the d20 result in the same thing: you succeed on the check. For example: the OP's scenario. To me, that is an inherently bad thing - why roll if the result changes nothing? (Your mileage may vary.)

I'm not tracking on this. Our most recent wizard was an evocation specialist and mostly had all "destruction" spells. He said he was a "Battle Mage". The one before that (we dont always have one) specced in rituals, knowledge, divination, and controlling type spells. Plus she took Magic Initiate (Cleric).

My take on that Fighting Surge ability is that you can score a critical hit on a number of attacks equal to your stronghold level. Each critical counts as one use. Because a fighter will only ever get two action surges at level 17, and strongholds can be higher than level 2. I could be wrong, but that's how I read that. There are a couple of instances like this where things are a little...

You know you're nerfing the way reliable talent works, right? For reliable talent, the player always rolls, anything under a 10 is a 10 anything over is the rolled number. Forcing a decision is expressly against the intent of the ability!

Looking further back, D&D seems to have sold better on Amazon in 2018 than 2017: in 2017, only the PHB made the yearly top 100, at #40, behind "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You Hear" and still just ahead of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" (speaking of Evergreen books): https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2017/books

I have, somewhat in jest, suggested that the next best chance for 6e will be right after the D&D movie (if it is a big success), because the odds are that the movie will change something about D&D (did you know that sorcerers are psychic? rangers all fly? goblins are good guys? druids plantshape instead of wildshape? monks are the most OP class? paladins can hit you until you become LG? Lolth is...

You offer an opinion, and then say something is "by definition". Huh? Which is it? Is it your opinion, or is it the definition of awesome? (Hint: the definition of 'awesome' has nothing to do with the ease with which the awesomeness is demonstrated.) And here you accuse us of not knowing the rules, and then go on to explain the alternative house rule you use. Surely there's a typo in...

I'd love some shadow themed spells too since I'm playing a custom shadow Warlock. I've seen fan created shadow pacts where shadow stuff can be used to make illusions that bit more real. I can see how spending spell points to achieve this could work but more thematic spells would be better.

Um .... not sure about which edition you're talking about, but IME in 1e, that wasn't the case. After all, in addition to running your own stuff, there were a lot of classic low level modules so it would have been pretty stupid to bypass the fun levels. Also, given that many campaigns petered out by name level, you'd be really restricting your campaign if you were only playing from 4-10...
