Thulwar throws another vial of acid and dissolves most of the armor from the prone form of the ghostly creature. It still has some fight in it and swings at Tink as the great machine retreats few steps before pouncing on the other one and bringing him down too. Claw swipes the creature down and metal beak tears into it as it goes down, bloodying it. Or at least making it leak green light ;) ...

I definitely agree. Take Blades in the Dark, for example. It’s has 3 phases of play: Free Play Score Downtime Each of those are effectively “scenes” or multiple scenes. However, only in certain cases (eg the GM deployment of a Clock or Opposing Clocks - very much kindred to 4e) will scene resolution be cemented in mechanically (rather than “organically”).

Much like MCing partially fixes it. Any choices you have in addition to class - Race(1e-5e), sub-class(1e-2e,Essentials,5e), Kit(2e only), Feats(3e,4e,~5e), PrCs (3e only), Backgrounds(4e & 5e), Theme(4e), Path(4e), Destiny(4e), or Archetype(PF) - are like quasi-classes that you can multi-class to without giving up anything from your main class. The more you introduce choices notwithstanding...

Scenes do not necessarily have to be cemented in mechanically. I wrote in a no-mechanics role-playing encounter into a 4e LFR mod where the PCs talked with various NPCs, there were no relevant skill rolls or powers to use, and the outcome of the player decisions drove the LFR campaign direction for year 5. And players were really invested in their decisions, too.

Yeah, I think the only way to get more Armor of Agathys is to cast Armor of Agathys. It’s pretty solid if you can’t get out of melee, for whatever reason, but if you’re keeping at ranged distance, its utility does decrease. But heck, as it stands, I’ve already got a player I’ve had to tell no less than three times that it doesn’t last for eight hours. I assume he’s conflating it with Mage...

Per the Temp HP rules in the PHB, temp HP never stack. When you get new ones, you have to decide if you want to keep your current Temp HP, or replace them with the new Temp HP. If you replace the Temp HP from Armor of Agathys with those from another source, the spell ends. If you want to get more use out of Armor of Agathys, you need to look into ways of mitigating the damage so that...

Pssh. It was 4E. Everyone cast spells, some of them just pretended they didn't. :p I mean, that is what it's there for. The weapon and armor proficiency's a bit wonky, though. Awkward reality of the subclass system, and strong case for "level three is the new level one".

Yes. When you receive a second set of temp hps, you can decide to take them, or to keep the ones you already have. Generally you take the higher, in this case you might not, to keep the spell running until the next hit.

That would be my understanding of the rules as written. The new spell effect supersedes the old, therefore the new temporary hit points replace the "these hit points". If you want to recharge armor of Agathys, I highly recommend casting armor of Agathys again.

Splitting attacks is a corner-case scenario that rarely comes up, because monsters in this edition have grossly inflated HP totals, so you're much more likely to make all of your attacks against the same target regardless. Most of the time, regardless of your level, a basic orc won't even die from a...

I hope so, it didn't ruin the book for me but it seemed to get out of hand by the end. I don't think I'll go further though. So reading some short stories out of Swords against Death by Leiber. Find this kind of fantasy so much more satisfying than save the world stuff.

I had to add the ATTACK +0 extra to Penetrating Punch in order for it to actually calculate attack correctly. I've attached my Hero Labs file (in a zip) to this post. Odd, it seems to me the best way to do high strength characters. And the array is in theory innate, but that implies immunity to nullify and weaken so I didn't put it on the strength. If you want, I'll buy a feature that says...

IMO, sanctuary gets it's power from your peaceful intentions and non-violent commitment. I would never allow it to "stack" or endure if you are also responsible for aggressive or violence. So no, fireshield negates sanctuary. Spirit Guardians negate sanctuary. With sanctuary you are relying upon the power of pacifism to protect you. With fireshield or spirit guardians you are relying upon...

I one time started a campaign with 1st level characters encountered a beholder. It was my way to set the tone so they knew every problem couldn't be solved through fighting. I wouldn't suggest doing it this way, but for this group it was an effective tactic.

I think to me that would be the edge case. If you are just there and monsters come to you to attack you - well it's their fault. However if you walk to *them* with the field up - that would break sanctuary.

Sorry, Haven't caught with the full thread yet, so feel free to ignore me if something similar has come up. I'll take one page out of my heartbreaker: Hit points.- At first level you gain your class hit dice + you Constitution score in hit points. If your hit points drop below your constitution score, you fall unconscious. If your hit points reach 0, you die. You can avoid falling unconscious...

That's really dependent on the DM. Some skill challenges are in essence a combat — get past X somehow or fail. But others can be more open ended and have multiple success or failure options. Really, skill challenges are just about the DM figuring out beforehand, what they view as some possible outcomes of expected roleplaying encounters that have both the use of skills and meaningful impacts...

I've varied how I've done this myself a couple of times, I don't think there's one answer. In fact, I'm tempted to run a campaign where magic items are extremely limited just to see how it would play out. I think I'd have to tweak a couple of rules (i.e. gargoyles can be hurt by adamantine weapons). In any case, I have done the "open market" type concept in the past and while it was fun, it...

Yup: a Chwinga bestowing a charm of restoration is your best bet. Alternately, someone at Kir Sabal might be able to cast the spell, but... my own players had to travel all the way back to Port Nyanzaru to find someone to cast the spell (any guide should know the way).

This is how I do it: When a campaign begins, I talk with players about the PCs they are creating. One of the things I discuss with them is how they picture the PCs at higher levels. They are not committing to a path, but I try to get a feel fro where the PC is likely to go. I always ask a bit about the kinds of magic items they like. Then I roll up all the treasure hordes they will find...

Some things I have used: Beggars can be the source for news, fights, information, tasks... Fires break out in populated areas. Caravans arrive and depart. Street food always adds nice detail. Funerals pass thru town on the way to cemetery. Market stalls offer backdrops for all kinds of things (smuggling, cheating, information, special items). If in a port town you have the wharves and...

Your proposal is much more generous then expected items in both power of items and also allowing choice. As such items will have a bigger impact then expected and characters will be a lot more powerful. (Which also leads to defeating more powerful foes and gaining more XP so advancing faster, etc.) Here's how I would modify it to bring it in line with expectations. First, here's a...

Yeah, I put in creatures both way above and way below the PCs power. And make sure that it comes across in my descriptions. Start them early with a fight they know they can't win, so they understand that there are times retreat or at least not a frontal assault is their best option. And then have them with a substantially similar fight later int eh campaign, where they can beat it and know...

They were not that good. They especially broke down when you started adding PCs, especially spellcasters. I played a LOT of Birthright, and in the end we used Warmachine (the mass battles system from BECMI), and even that was better than the Cards
