I can only see it being an issue if your follow-up campaign (be it Dungeon of the Mad Mage or something else) featured a lot of fiends or undead. Otherwise it’s not a big deal at all.

I am not really a fan of back-grounding as a formal mechanic - mostly because I think it reinforces playing a character concept rather than a character. I also think it encourages individual creativity over vigorous collaboration. I am not a fan of these walled off gardens we have the tendency to create in this hobby where we decide how exactly everyone else at the table is allowed to engage with...

Yeah, I have to agree that it's staggeringly unintuitive as written. There needs to be more explanation right in the spell description regarding whether and how other sources of armour (dex, shield, armour, cover, etc.) interact with it. He makes a quick estimation about their state, and whether either of the parents is level-headed enough to lead the others out safely. Insight . If he thinks they are, he offers to help someone move the stone aside (somebody roll str with advantage?)

Sure your "civilised" inhabitants of the game world can get all high and mighty about treating my Warforged PC as a monster and on the other hand who is going to save them from the real monster of the week? How would it interact with Cunning Action to become OP? I would have thought it's almost redundant: currently we have archer rogues using Cunning Action to Hide and get Disadvantage (and thus Sneak Attack) every round against ranged targets. How would giving them automatic advantage make that worse?

If you have a player who obviously doesn't want their character's obligations to come up in play, odds are they are...

Yes it would be broken. I understand the confusion about when the rogue has advantage in order to use sneak attack, but that damage really starts to add up in a hurry. Based on my experience, with Cunning Action, it really creates a power-killer in a hurry that outclasses everyone else, with the possible exception of the fighter.

Depends on the CR you are looking for. More PCs and magic protect from poison over acid. You can bump the CR if you have acid over poison. Typically it would be poison on a beast or monstrosity. I would go acid for a construct though.

Oh, it was super controversial when 5e first came out. The thing is, it’s extremely easy to understand the literal meaning of the words, but the conclusion can be very difficult to reconcile with the fiction. For example, a character with 14 Dex and hide armor has an AC of 14, so Barkskin increases it to 16. But if that character picks up a shield, Barkskin no longer affects them because their AC...

Because that would change its function. With that wording, it could be used to reduce a target’s AC, and it could be modified from that value by things like equipping a shield or going behind cover. With the current wording, if you AC would be less than 16 without Barkskin, it becomes 16, and if your AC would be equal to or greater than 16, it remains that value.

For new players it shouldn't be unbalanced to make it always on. A decent player will be able to get it 90% of the time anyways. A highly optimized rogue might be too strong if he got always on sneak attack. An arcane trickster with booming blade and haste for an off turn attack does some seriously impressive damage later.

Yes, that is correct. Mage Armor stacks with the shield spell, the same way that shields stack with armor. There are three ways of modifying your AC, (although one of them only occurs in one specific spell.) 1. An item, ability, or spell gives you a way to calculate your AC. Examples include armor, unarmed defense, and mage armor. These abilities never stack with each other. So, for example,...

What Monayuris said. 5E can take some getting used to, especially when coming over from older editions. The old way of "start with a number and then find ways to stack bonuses" has been replaced with fixed numbers. Barkskin doesn't give you a bonus to AC, it changes your (minimum) AC to a fixed number. Belt of Giant Strength doesn't give you a bonus to Strength; it changes your Strength...

It doesn’t describe what the bonus to AC is because it doesn’t give a bonus to AC. It is, in fact, an extremely efficient spell description, as it says in very precise terms exactly what it does. It prevents your AC from being less than 16. Is your AC 12? Barkskin sets it to 16. Is it 15? Barkskin sets it to 16. Is your AC 17? Then it is not less than 16, so Barkskin doesn’t adjust your AC.

self doubt and self deception should fall outside the purview of lies.. at least in this limited topic.. no person can speak something that is biased by belief and have it be 100% true.. "I love you", "we are friends", "I can do that", "I can't dp that"... none of those statements are Lies per say unless the person believes them to be a lie.. Additionally most of what people say would be...

I'll even give you a 15% reduction. Of the non-magical B/P/S damage you take at 20th level. Say it keeps you up for one extra hit. Maybe 1/3 of the time you would have dropped that would keep you up for an extra action, other times you'll still drop before your action. The rest of the time it basically means nothing - either you're down anyway or it's fractional less to heal. How many...

I'm always up for new spells. Thanks for putting these up! Detect Maleficence looks like an outgrowth of Detect Good and Evil. Additional things that can be detected, at a higher level. Looks good. Combat Clarity (and the Mass version) look like the type of spell that in normal play seem like they are well balanced, but are part of power-combos. Even the Fighter (Samurai) can only grant...

Sometimes I do miss the whole 3e named bonuses thing. I have had a bit of a hunt and I think that Mage Armour and Shield stack with each other but I can't find a clear ruling. The closest is this which seems to make a differentation between setting your AC (like Mage Armour does) and a bonus to your AC (like Shield). Is that right? I guess it's not going to matter too much, and you can argue...

I think this could be useful so I guess I'll show it, but there are encounter edits for those who are running with groups of different sizes. As well as if one is not using milestone leveling and the PCs don't level during a certain chapter or level too quickly. Chapter 1: A Friend in Need Chapter 2: Trollskull Alley Chapter 3: Fireball Chapter 4: Dragon Season - General

Shield master still has usefulness as if your a tank and you have an ally with booming blade. 1. Ally attacks melee enemy with booming blade (I have a Sorcerer melee fighter who uses booming blade with twin and quicken spell and Shadow blade, sentinel, so this is a likely thing for my group.) 2. Tank moves forward and attacks, then bonus action Shield Master pushes enemy back 5ft. 3. On the...

We're not looking for over 20-30 average attack, we are looking for attacks in the 20-30 attack range. So the fact that there aren't many above that range isn't really of import to the discussion. The multiattack was on the giants. At CR 8 and above, giants already are in the 20-30 average damage per attack range, AND they have multiattack with those attacks. So multiattack is not "making...

For those worried about what this means for the direction of dnd going forward. You should be worried. The most iconic elements of dnd are a direct result of competitive play. The most iconic modules, the push for RAW Uber alles. And many other things. If this proves to be very popular then, just like all those things you like about DnD, you can bet it will be incorporated into the...
