It's practical for PCs, because PCs tend to have above-average stats, and anyone with Strength less than 13 is intentionally dumping it. I'm not sure if it makes sense for the rest of the world, unless you want basic training for a town guard to include getting their Strength to 13 (which seems reasonable enough to me). At that point, it would serve well as a differentiator between trained...

I understand. The cost of the various armors hasn't changed. I like the idea of martial characters benefiting most from armor and finding it the most attractive.

Rogues will be a little sad about the light armor rule, they just lose a point of AC. Same for melee-oriented bards, I suppose.

I don't see the point. 5e armour is already pretty simple. This will give heavy armour users annoyingly high armour class at first level. The strength requirement for medium armour would strain medium armor classes, especially those that are not martial focussed.

I feel like armor types are aesthetic choices more than anything. You wear scale because it's cultural or what have you. That's story stuff, not mechanics stuff (too me).

Sounds good, since really, that's the kind of armor that peo0lengp for anyway. So i dont see the value of slightly poorer armors except as an interim. You can then add fluff as you want, for example medium could be lamellar or chain shirt. Heavy could be scale or plate or whatever.

It sounds about right. If you used these rules, instead of the ones in the book, the game would not suffer significantly for it. It does raise the question of why anyone would buy plate armor, if scale armor was just as effective and also cheaper (or easier to make), but I'm sure you have a reasonable answer for that.

The premise is flawed in several ways. First, as it was pointed out, the 100 year war happened, so it certainly is possible. And second, longswords and guns did coexist in reality. In fact, D&D is the weird one because many of the advances D&D has like plate armor were only invented after guns spread to Europe. D&D equipment mostly falls squarely into the "Pike and Shot" era, but it pretests to...

At first blush, I was totally on board with using this model (separate psionics system or not asside); it is the ideal place to start. What is a Psychic Warrior but a fighter with a psychic abilities added on top? That is fine as far as it goes, but then I looked back and...

Let Mearls design what he's doing and if it comes out that the are "spellcasting" based, then just say all psionics are cast w/o components and with the an unlimited spell point system. Done. it's not spells anymore for your games, but it uses existing frameworks that other people can easily learn. I think that...

I like that the Warlock is one of the most customisable classes. For me its issue is not enough spells known. My Warlock is based on a shadow mage (I found that the shadow sorcerer suffers from insufficient shadow flavour). I mixed and matched class features from the fey and fiendish pacts, reflavoured with a shadow theme (so misty escape is now a bonus action from shadow to shadow). ...

Plenty of love for following the direction the players put out. With the "super NPC" analogy, there's a writing big about "Kill your darlings" - in other words anything that you've fallen so in love with that it will warp the rest of your story needs to go. That doesn't mean you can't have cool campaign ideas (or cool NPCs), it means that you can't let them take the spotlight or the choices...

I hated how, in Out of the Abyss (which we played all the way through), demon lords were nerfed down to big bags of hit points. In prior editions, they had a horde of spells and resistances to draw upon, cementing their authority as the bad-asses they should be. In the adventure, there's a literary scene where Yeenoghu takes down a Goristro with nary a scratch. On paper, that doesn't work. In...

Simply put: it would make it much easier to ignore melee combatants, on both sides. This has positives: such as not causing characters to "bog down" or "stand still" once they're in melee. This has negatives: melee combatants can be more easily "kited". Basically: if you think ranged supremacy is bad now, remove AoOs and it'll get worse.

I agree, but the mixed mechanic is actually pretty common. GURPS uses it in all their settings, for example, and if I recall Runequest did as well. This might inspire another topic on how to deal with dice cheats. Thoughts of the moment involve taking lucky dice and applying a sledgehammer. Repeat occurrences still involve a sledgehammer, but it isn't the dice that get flattened.

For me, psionics should not be spells. There may be a few psionics that duplicate the effects of spells, but if you're just going to make it into another form of spellcasting similar to wizard or cleric, you're not really giving us something worthwhile and distinct. I'd rather you have something new. Example: Psions gain 4 keywords at first level, and psychic warriors gain 3. Each...

Short version: The Paladin is strong because, without their aura, they are comparable to other traditional martial characters. And then you count their aura, which is one of the best single abilities in the entire game. Mind, I wouldn't say this makes them overpowered, but it does help them compete for a party slot with the full casters.
