Right. They seem to be designing PF2 in a vacuum, overlooking 5e, 13th Age, Dungeon World, and even completely different games like Fate or Cypher. Games have evolved dramatically since Pathfinder was released, let alone 3e and they seem to be just focusing on evolving the game. The natural language is the big part for me. While 5e might say “As an action, you magically do something...

But, again, that deviation predates Essentials with the PHB3. And even in the PHB1 the wizard knew more Daily powers than other classes, even if they were limited in use. And the barbarian also varied the template with the rage strike. Essentials was different. But compared to 3e or 5e, the differences between Esentials and vanilla 4e are largely cosmetic and minor and the games are...

I was skeptical coming into this thread but a lot of the ideas are well thought-out. I'm certainly surprised how much I like them. The 5E weapon chart is sort of in a weird place. In general, they simplified, but it feels like they didn't go far enough. And because of that, it still has holes and balance issues that could use expanding. It also kept a lot of the traditional weapons but...

AEDU stands for At-Will, Encounter, Daily, Utility. There's nothing about the AEDU system that necessitates each character to have the same number of each type of power at the same levels, that's just how 4e classes happened to be designed up until the PHB 3. So, while Essentials variants of previously existing classes were structured entirely differently than their pre-essentials counterparts,...

I think anything that causes your character's abilities to rise and fall with the cycles of the moon is just asking for trouble of some kind (e.g. ask your wife). Personally I never liked it when they added it to the Dragonlance rules (late AD&D book?), and for me it's especially not in the spirit of 5e - you're just asking for trouble with people wanting to game it.

Yeah, I know the terms came up from time to time, but I prefer how they tended to go with just “Powers” as a catch all. Especially when being used “in world” rather than in relation to game mechanics. The term would apply to deities, powerful planar beings like demon princes, beings that are not so easily categorized (such as Primus)....and so on.

It is clear that there ARE trade-offs to how 4e does things. The issue boils down to you could remove all mechanical significance from every thematic choice, but then you're left to deal with them ONLY in a narrative way. That might be OK in some games, D&D has never been one of them. So 4e was left with providing a lot of subtley different powers which are similar but not identical and link the...

4e is a mixture of D&D elements in a dynamic adventure game with a heavy story-telling element. That is the essence of it. You move to the action, resolve conflicts with Skill Challenges, only roll dice and describe action when there is something interesting at stake, etc. Mechanically the whole game is built around the skill system, which is actually more of a 'knacks' or 'propensities'...

Being a cleric (or a druid) should have huge impacts on how that class is played. Yes, it's more limiting, but, at the same time, I'd rather that cleric players start with "I'M A CLERIC" rather than just another caster.
