I would consider adding to 5e a general proficiency bonus that was +1 per 2 levels to many things to break open the higher level awesome sauce. (The bounded accuracy thing seems to defeat the flavor text of the various tiers by keeping mundane obstacles perhaps too challenging when you are high level)

Most of the PCs I get to play have Tymora as the primary god. It is easy to play and be bold like adventurers should. Any cleric I play tends to be Lathander or Moradin.

I don't know that I would go that far. Advancement rates is in theory a legitimate way of achieving balance that might otherwise be difficult because advancement rate is highly granular. It's very clear that the 1e classes are widely imbalanced and its less clear how to make them balanced and retain the 1e feels and simplistic mechanics. The biggest problem with the 1e advancement rates is...

I'd give it a go. Although I thInk I'd make it only simple spells stack, to eliminate any confusion that might be caused by that order of effects thing, so when a player asks "can these spells stack?" the answer is always a straightforward "if they're all simple, yes." At least I'd keep this option in mind while playtesting what you got as written.

You seem to be assuming that the unpersuaded party is metagaming. If they are that's a separate issue, one that is going to be a bigger issue at some tables but not others. I don't reduce PCs (or NPCs) to a set of numbers where decisions and. Thoughts could ever come down to a die roll unless the player decides to leave it up to chance. I agree. For me, the reason for it to only affect a single particular weapon is to avoid making new dual-wielding options strictly superior to dual shortswords or making daggers objectively superior to other simple weapons (its already honestly pretty strong for a simple weapon, but I want to avoid making that problem any worse).

The +2 or 3 for weapon proficiency didnt serve a great purpose, what did it do? disguise the AC which tended to be a couple points higher than other defenses. In practice how many times do characters pick up an weapon they arent proficient in? This could be an argument for just putting them at a 5e style disadvantage when they do.

I would agree. I'll probably cap cantrips at 11th and grant casting of cantrips as a bonus action at 17th. I understand the infinite cantrips is meant so casters have something to do at all times in combat, but they already can match or exceed warriors in damage potential (the cantrips), and of course, higher level spells can vastly overpower them (as it always has been, and should be IMO). ...

There was a thread about mass combat rules for 4E. You could use the old Battlesystem rules in the Rules Cyclopedia and just have the Warlord grant a bonus to the battle numbers or have the warlord add double its level or something. Healing surge don't work obviously but just beef up the healing word ability and replace with non magical CLWs or something and at higher levels they get a non...

I might be interested in seeing that. In 5e at some level Mearls took the flavor text of 2e for the fighter and said yup one Warlord is a type of Fighter. Battlemaster is a nod to that - the prototype Warlord he put out in a video is also a sub type of fighter you could call a chess master styled warlord and it's pretty interesting. Shoehorning is exactly what is being talked about here. If the setting doesn't have gnomes and you want to put one in despite that, you're trying to shoehorn a gnome into the game, plain and simple. No, what you are saying is that the DM either must make the changes, or must concede that the setting is 'fragile' and 'not all that strong' if he doesn't want to make the change. You actually...

To me--and I imagine to others--the idea of some spell levels scaling automatically while others do not is far more inelegant and intrusive than what we have. Even if I agreed that it felt "off" to have cantrips do more damage than some low level spells at higher levels, this particular solution would feel even more so.

The numbers could be stretched a bit though and tweak the ACs at lower levels to account for it. By that I mean you could do the 4E +1/2 levels thing but 4E gave you +2 or 3 to hit off weapons while Star Wars Saga used the 4E system but you didn't get the +2 or +3 to hit off weapons. My Blend from a few years ago tweaked slightly once 5E came out. Its kind of a mix of the 5E, B/X and 3.5...

Absolutely. If one doesn’t find the main-gauche solution acceptable for any reason - mechanical, aesthetic, whatever - they don’t have to use it. It’s what I would do, for the reasons I gave above. It is simple, elegant, and has the smallest footprint. I also offered an alternate - include the special property in the dagger or the rapier instead of making up a new weapon to give it to. Slightly...

But rogue weapon proficiencies are consistently rated lower than all of the classes that get 'all martial', simply because...

I don’t see why that should rule out the option of including (hypothetical) exceptions to the normal rules that apply to a rapier in the rules for the rapier. The light property on any weapon is irrelevant to anyone who isn’t using it for two-weapon fighting. And I would argue that the rapier entry is the part of the game that the rules for how rapiers work is most relevant to. On...

I'm not arguing for or against it running it this way, I'm pointing out a consequence that happens IF you use them that I think many people would be surprised by. Its more of a corner case in 5E and its optional so its not as bad as 3E. And its at higher levels so in some respect its more theory crafting as most games still don't go past level 10 apparently so in most games it won't be an issue even if someone builds that PC. Can be done but its not systematic if that makes any sense.

Remove the design space of ‘race’, entirely. So it is more like creating a superhero character, where the ‘race’ is only one of many explanations for where the power comes from. Build your character by selecting ability score improvements, feats, and traits. The default is human, but you and the DM decide whatever it is.

The monsters are boring in comparison to 4e ones at minimum because of it (and maybe you are right about them being weak a 4e ogre smash people to the ground with every swing is a lot more interesting and also powerful than the 5e counter part) Yes the scaling defenses (and skills too) I rather like they capture heros getting all around awesome as they level. Ability score caps with old...

No, there isnt. We only inhabit our characters for a very limited amount of time. That little 1 minute speech and persuasion roll? That was the cliff notes version of the argument, simply because we as players don't want to deliver (or hear) a multi hour oration. There's a huge level of separation in player and character. You aren't actually hearing a charisma 20 character speak with a +10...

Because REDEMPTION ARC!! Woo!! (You have to throw your hands straight up in the air while you shout it for it to have maximum impact.) No, but seriously, because Darth Vader was apparently redeemed in his story (does Vader-ghost really signify that? I'm not entirely sure) a not insignificant portion of viewers also thought, and wanted, for Kylo to follow down that same path somehow. Or...

Shield's +4 when I need it will always be better then a bit of damage. Shield is a good example of spells that stay relevant at higher levels. Cantrip damage also stays relevant - via scaling. I'm saying this to point out that you aren't comparing cantrips and 1st level spells, you're comparing cantrips and 1st level damage spells, and even there you're only comparing them at higher...

I remember mcing oldschool to be very restrictive feeling? 3e was simple and freeform but very abusable as you have said. However it looks like 5e fixed 3e multi-classing by removing the front loading factor of classes. 4e used arguably 2 complex methods of multiclassing one is a dabbling multiclassing bound to the feat system. Which is pretty flexible and can be engaged throughout the...

So you liked the slaughter of the room full of people together angle? People are always defined by their interactions with each other. I suppose if you believe in some sort of libertarian ubermensch, she would make sense to you? It's foreign to me.

I didn't read any of the EU books, have never watched the Clone Wars. I am not a "die-hard SW fan," at least no more than any Gen-X semi-geek. I do love the original trilogy, which is part of my cultural mythology. The friend I saw it with is similar, and we both were--to say the least--underwhelmed. I was left with a bad taste, a sense of wwrongness, even, like I had just seen my dead...

Note that you are thus defining Rey's role in the story in terms of her romantic relationship to the man. Which is already the dominant mode of fiction, to date. Not so much "verve" as "cliche". Thanks, I find it more interesting for her to be out on her own, not needing the man to define who or what she is to the story.

Ok, so 4 different gradations, determined by the target player. Not so different from letting the player choose the DC. Which, in turn, is not so different from just letting the player roleplay it as he or she sees fit. I do acknowledge this requires some trust, in the other people at the table, to participate in the fiction. If one does not trust the other players at the table...well, I'm...

The advantage of it though is the old scgool MCing which modern D&D has struggled with since 3E. 5E has its bugs with MCing, 4E didn't really have it as such (I don't count the MC feats or hyvbrid system as proper MCIng). Some of the clones have overhauled it. The old xp system (at least in BECMI) also did a better job of balancing things for the most part (2E fighter>5E fighter relative to their...

Or, as it is so often phrased, what your character "would do" in a given situation, as if there were any such thing. All it really means is "what I think your character would do". Or, "how I would roleplay your character if it were mine". Even though it's not.

See, it works, you are already adding verve to the idea. To paraphrase Tolstoy's “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” It's the fact that it would probably play out like an unhappy romance is key, tragedy is more gripping story-wise. Rey as the Red Queen? Pregnant mother fleeing to the wilderness to protect her unborn child? There are a huge amounts of...
