I would say this means the target tries to fall asleep, but that is not something most creatures can do at will. If it eventually does, then I would say it would remain asleep until it awakens naturally. So for a tired guard this might work great. For an not-so-sleepy guard another suggestion might be better. Yes, it would stop if it knows there is something more important it should be...

Sorry, but changes to the rules are typically done for a reason, and usually done to solve some perceived problem. Without knowing the reason for creating this rule, we can't adequately evaluate its viability because we have no criteria to judge it by. Balance is a subjective thing, and so if we don't know how you define balance or what your purpose for this rule change is, it cripples the...

Suggestion compels them to perform the task but does not make them stop it once the spell was off. So they would go try to get some sleep - likely nod off when they could and when the spell ended would wake or not based on circumstances. For home night, again, could decide "need to get back to work" or not when it ends. Lot os it depends there.

One of the things I've been considering is that a Long Rest is something which takes place between adventures. It takes an indefinite amount of time, during which you can prepare all of your spells, and all of your injuries heal up, and that's just not something you can do while other events are in motion.

That's sort of how Warlocks work already? Their Pact slots recover on SR, their Mystic Arcanum slots recover on LR. Of course, they have many fewer slots! Only 2-3 Pact Slots, so your caster will be recovering twice as many slots on an SR, even if they're lower level. Plus your rule allows them to recover a 6th level slot eventually, which Warlocks can't do. If I were you, I'd take a...
