You keep asserting that. But you haven't said anything to convince me. Again, I think it is a mistake to look at someone from outside their own culture and assume you know how that culture influences their works and how their works reflect their beliefs. You are acting as if you have special access to this outsider or self aware perspective. No one is saying a person's culture doesn't...

I try to be mindful of the things that go into AC when I describe a miss. "You caught it on your shield," or "You got past his guard, but glanced off his armor." I basically layer it DEX, then armor, then shield. I think it helps players understand what their hit target number is. For a "touch" attack, I either do it as a grapple where defense has to be dex (acrobatics,) or I take the to-hit...

I don’t know if anyone else is dealing with this, but the General Roleplaying Games Discussion board is full of threads started by talien that have the same title as LongGoneWriter’s post reviewing Starfinder’s Alien Archives 2. They all say the same thing: I am on the desktop site on my iPhone, if that somehow makes a difference.

I am currently playing an Aarakocra monk in a ToA campaign. The DM and I agreed that I could only carry party members who are Small. Likewise, I can only attempt to grapple/drop Small enemies. It just makes sense. I am a long time DM and know when to “limit” my character’s flight so as not to trivialize exploration or obstacles.

I'll give you that people are probably not self aware, but then again that's just re-stating they live in an insulated microcosm. Except for those of us who are from somewhere else, or are self aware, or have situational awareness, something; we can see.

That does not mean that a campaign must have these other varieties and that not encountering them changes the cleric. It means that depending on your campaign (and deities therein), the nature of deities will vary. I'm glad that I can help you...

This is the part I find particularly suspect. Certainly the culture and environment you live in, will influence content. That doesn't mean people can deduce your political views just because there is a vague influence. Just because a GM includes a few elements that harken to real-world philosophies, that in no way gives me an indication of what the GM actually believes about them. The GM could be...

Yes, I think many people live in a insulated microcosm, that they rarely face another opinion, or if they do, they do not understand it. Which is where people are probably saying that they do not overtly put politics in; even though one could tell their political persuasion by the philosophies at play.

Why would I have to poll anyone? The rules say they do. It says that every reasonably well known god has clerics. It goes to say that some, not many, not most, not all, but only some, can be clerics of things like an ideal. That makes the vast majority of 3e clerics, clerics of a god per RAW. It's in the Religion section on page 30.

If the GM is just going to stipulate all this stuff, what is the player there for? To provide some emotional language and the odd tear? When I play a RPG I expect to be actually making decisions that matter. I'm not just there to emote my way though events the GM decides are taking place. A sponsor's heel turn does not invalidate the players' contributions, though. How can it?Because it...

I did not talk about a PC whose goal is to keep his/her family on the straight and narrow. I talked about a PC (like Samwise Gamgee) who is going out on a quest to make the world a safe place again, and when it is done planning to come back to dear old dad (a la Sam Gamgee's Gaffer). Having the GM unilaterally decide that the Gaffer is a serial killer is just a way to kill of that character...

Yes, the Shield in the spell name is figurative not literal and the spell does not say otherwise. There for per the rules of receiving bonuses from separate sources stacking being a spell and a physical shield they do stack. At least until a hit knock out that concentration.

I would love to be a part of that. I’m on mobile, so you’ll need to start the thread, I think. I don’t have the character sheet on me. Is there anything that I should advise players to think about when it comes to backgrounds?

Tackling this in some fashion seems pretty important. There's probably some stuff you can do as GM on the framing side of things; and also stuff that can be looked at on the resolution side too. "Fail forward" resolution in particular - it's a bit tricky in 5e because so much action resolution involves spells, but it can probably be used for ability check/skill check resolution. ("Fail...

Next week, the "behind the scenes" book for the TV show Stranger Things comes out. Jon Peterson has scored a copy, and has some photos... and they're of the D&D character sheets for the TV characters! The book is called Worlds Turned Upside Down.

A lot of those responses seem aimed at a very GM-driven, "follow-the-bread-crumbs" style of play. If you're interested in talking about more player-driven play there are posters on these boards who can talk about that (me, Campbell, Manbearcat and others). The best place to start a thread on that would be in General RPG, as a lot of the relevant techniques are not 5e-specific.

Yeah, I know what you mean. STA is definitely built around managing momentum. I guess that, at least in part, it is a side effect of trying to get a game session to feel a bit like a television episode. I should say that my game sessions aren't all that crazy in this respect. Each player will get inspiration roughly every 1-4 sessions, which seems like a lot more than before I implemented the...

For level 1 I'm surprised no one has mentioned using a quarterstaff the polearm mastery with the dueling fighting style. 1d6+5+1d4+5 = 16 sustained damage at level 1. It goes up to to 24.5 anytime you get the reaction attack of polearm master.

Or they could be fully aware of possible political implications and simply not care or regard them as relevant to what they are doing. I mean I could be the most politically minded person in all other aspects of my life, but when I sit down to GM, I may consider it the worst place imaginable to insert my politics. Now you can choose to see political message in my choice of villains, but don't I...

Unlimited rolls is a terrible model for anything (Other than a drunk trying to carry another drunk up the stairs. Then it's pretty durn hilarious.) Sometimes the goal isn't always about whether you get them up the stairs or not, but how many times you try before you give up...

Thanks for the clarification and sorry if I implied you wren't into RP (not that there's anything wrong if you are not). But the issues you raise like not stealing from fellow PCs or not being a jerk are things that should be discussed during a session 0. Then again, I haven't had time to listen to more than a dozen or so episodes and it sounds like they do things I wouldn't allow.

But the person in this example is clearly allowing their political views to impact the choice of villain. Another GM might focus more on making an interesting villain regardless of how much that jives with his or her POV. Maybe the villain is the CEO, maybe it is a union leader, or an activist (or someone with zero clear political implications). Also, just because people can read a political...
