But you're changing the premise, which is that you just roll in order once and accept what you get. There seems to be this underlying assumption in the thread that you could never play a character with 'bad' stats, so you have to do something to prevent that.

Eh... maybe? If you have a lot of decision points, such that optimization becomes a fun exercise, then that's a strong incentive for some people to go back and play that mini-game. You can still have complexity without turning character creation into a fun puzzle, but I can't think of any way to do that without invoking random factors (like Palladium, or Maid). It's probably not common enough...

Well, he's a right daisy, isn't he, Orin thinks to himself as the knight storms into the tavern with his arrogance and insults. The rogue raises an eyebrow at the declaration about the orcs. There could be a valuable opportunity here, and he intended to take it, despite Sir Pelleton's piggish attempts at dissuasion. "Look, Sir Knight," the warbred began, "I'm jus' a sellsword, which means I...

I know that there are players who deliberately let their characters die in order to bring in their latest and coolest. Never understood that. I mean, really? Pull that trick at my table, and you get a pregen of my making, and since I'm not happy...And that pregen will be strangely robust!:) Wouldn't the character system have to be really basic to avoid the silliness you mention? One example I was thinking of is if a Fighter failed a Dex save while climbing or crossing a dangerous rock-bridge, etc, and started falling. They could use their Action Surge to try to grab onto the ledge again (basically re-roll the Save).

Oh, certainly! I didn't mean it was a chore, as in it was boring. I just meant that it was a necessary obligation, which you must complete before you can play the actual game. Even if you really like carrots, you still have to eat them all before you can have dessert. I don't know who said it first, but ever since 3E, character creation has been its own mini-game. 288-289 It's not bad, maps to what you get with spell slots. You do lose the second 6th and 7th level spell slots that you get at 19th and 20th level, (because you're only allowed 1 of each of the 6+ level spells per day) but that's really not enough to worry about.

Seems like some inspirstion here from the original warlock invocations from 3.5e. Some of these I like a lot. And what痴 with all this 菟oint buy slows character creation to a crawl nonsense? Point buy is incredibly fast and easy. Put a 14 or 15 in your prime requisite ability (depending on if it gets +2 or +1 from your race), put 12, 13, or 14 in your secondary ability (depending on if it gets +2, +1, or +0 from your race), put an 8 in your least important ability, and put a 12 and a 10 in the other...

Removing all decision points from character creation would certainly make character creation faster, but at the cost of sucking all the fun out of it. Decision points are what the game is all about. Imagining yourself as another person and/or in a fictional situation and making decisions as you imagine you or that person would in that situation is the definition of roleplaying. All parts of the...

I'm not really worried about things that get flushed down toilets; I am much, much, much more concerned with things coming UP from the toilet. Especially if I am on the toilet at the time.

It may be edge, but my god its a great and gory example of roleplaying activity out of combat. Love it!

Yeah, you dump it down the toilet, then it haunts the sewers until it grows into a giant world-eating alligator.

The Medicine Skill AND Healing Kits being useless, IMO, is a factor of the DM specifically and, by extension, the flavor of the campaign. Let's not forget the usefulness of Medicine in this edge case (which the players, egged on by my 11 year old son who memorized the MM, enjoyed immensely in our Curse of Strahd campaign after encountering a Death Slaad in the Amber Temple): Variant:...

Skills overlap, Nature might help with perhaps 3 or 4 of these at best. Healing spells don't help with most of these uses. You're reducing medicine down to the combat benefit of preventing death at 0 hp which is shortsighted. Magic isnt always available and to be fair healing spells are not necessary in 5e with healing abilities abilities and resting mechanics. Many times we've adventured...

It can be both a dump stat, AND a world-eating stat that has destroyed intelligence and wisdom? The mind ... um ... charisma ... BOGGLES! :)

Yeah, gonna have to agree. Nothing against Rob as he is a talented designer and clearly has struck on something people are clamoring for. But, IMO, the base class does seem like a glorified Valor Bard with the Inspiring Leader feat and perhaps even has the Aid and/or Bless spells through magical secrets. No TPP truly necessary.

Many of those are the Nature skill. Cures are obtained from spells and abilities. Remember, this is a land of magic. There are herbalists and holy people with magical healing powers. You have not acknowledged that Medicine is not used with healing kits. Regardless, Healing Kits are also useless (w/the exception of the Healer feat) because Healing Potions are so much better.

This is a great example of a lack of imagination regarding skills. Medicine is only as useless as the player and DM allow it to be useless. My suggested uses of the medicine skill... - Identifying cause of death (and time of death) - Identifying the nature of death from blood splatter and wound direction (think Dexter) - Identifying personal details based on remains (skeleton of a middle...

A quick peak at one of our latest games the Sewer burglary.. when players think outside the box, the Gm has to adapt and come up with a new section of backstory to adjust for the plan/campaign
