It has happened a few times over the decades. The worst I can recall was an Aftermath campaign billed as a standard post-apocalyptic campaign set in the Mississippi delta region. We created characters using the character creation system provided; the fall of civilization was ~20 years prior, characters can be contemporaneous or even pre-date the collapse. One player built an older PC with...

For me, psionics should not be spells. There may be a few psionics that duplicate the effects of spells, but if you're just going to make it into another form of spellcasting similar to wizard or cleric, you're not really giving us something worthwhile and distinct. I'd rather you have something new. Example: Psions gain 4 keywords at first level, and psychic warriors gain 3. Each...

Short version: The Paladin is strong because, without their aura, they are comparable to other traditional martial characters. And then you count their aura, which is one of the best single abilities in the entire game. Mind, I wouldn't say this makes them overpowered, but it does help them compete for a party slot with the full casters.

If you use an action, reaction or bonus action when using a skill (as appropriate), you roll a d20 and add your modifier - but 10 is generally treated as the minimum roll. When you wield it, it occurs as a +2 weapon. Time goes by. Your mind considers the sword. You start to feel empowered, as though the sword is increasing your confidence. While bearing the sword,...

But that's still the problem. You shouldn't be testing tasks with effectively no chance for meaningful failure. The game doesn't intend for you to do it. That is nothing more than a waste of everyone's time. Just suggesting those examples implies a disconnect with the intent of Skill Checks. If we do see something like a psionic wish (which is certainly thematically appropriate and we've seen it before), it'd be cleaner just to bake into the individual power "Once you've used this, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest" (or perhaps even longer).

I have a lot of interest in telling stories that are low magic, human-centric, and heavy on exploration. My ideas come from dungeon crafting. I set time aside to doodle on graph paper, imagine creatures, and find flow. Once I'm inspired, I consider the players and their characters' bonds. The story usually writes itself from there. :)

Hey! I'm playing basically in 2E(with, obviously, a lot of home-brewing), but it IS a 1E module(and this is, essentially, my first post on ENWorld, so please forgive if I'm uncouth at this, at all). My game is a one-on-one-she handles 4 pcs, I gave 3 DMPC's, we've streamlined it as much as we can, and it's a ton of fun, but a ton of work). We're playing S-3 "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks",...

Fly is rather pointless underwater, except to perhaps increase your speed, if it does so. Same with levitate. I suppose they could help if you are unable to swim for some reason, as you move mentally instead of actually swimming.

The ray bounces off the bouldery shell. From which a huge crab emerges! Its great claws snap at Muk, but fails to grab the heavily armored orc. The crayfish retreats, but continues to wave its claws and taunt you. (you can all go, probably should be Jin, then Curt, then the orcs, then Emrick, but just post).

Any given system can 'withstand' modding, if the modding is done skillfully - or be wrecked by it, if not. ;) Ironically, the closer a system is to broken, the more amenable it is to modding - in fact, if a system is broken to begin with, you might as well mod it to suit, while you're fixing it! I suspect you don't mean in the sense of INT starting at 3 and Computer not being a skill? ...

The 5e playtest didn't originally have attacks of opportunity. They fairly quickly added them in (second or third iteration if i recall). One problem was that you could have a long line of foes move past you taking swings as they went. Now you can always try to change other rules to fix that, like getting rid of the ability to attack at any point during your movement. But then you've just...

Taylar leans back with a laugh. "In charge? I merely don't want my brothers to miss out on a grand adventure with me. I'm going to that keep, but if you wish to stay here, take your share of the earnings. I'll bring you back a Yahdram souvenir." Taylar looks at Maka. "That is a good idea. We should see what the armorer here has."

I think the point of Eberron is, the setting says, "If magic works like D&D, what if people industrialized that?" The magic of the setting flows from that source idea. Guns in the real world were something to be developed because there aren't a lot of more powerful man-portable weapons. A gun is just better than a crossbow. But it's not better than a magic crossbow. So, the need for gunpowder...

It was very unlikely - strange even, that anyone should have come upon it." Qawasha ventured, "It was the Chwinga that brought us together. They are known to 'play' with fate. It is fortuitous."

As I said (on this thread or another), there are other places that back up the same concepts. I don't expect you to just take my word on it, so maybe someone else can remember the other sources. If not, I can always post them in a year or two with the new ones that come out in later books once I've run across them again while going through the books.

But seriously, you asked to share experience and because AoO has been around since 1st edition, it's hard to do so as taking it away tends to punish players far more than the bad guys and you'd have to House Rule it away to know what it's like. Otherwise: AD&D 1st edition: Free attacks on anyone leaving melee. That's plural. Don't flee from bears, hydras, etc. AD&D 2nd edition: Same thing +...

Not the way I'm used to 'flexibility' being used around here, which tends to be about the range of capabilities of the character, no. I mean in terms of options presented to the player. A game like Hero, for instance, is super-flexible, in part because it presents a finite set of options that are mixed & re-skinned as a matter of course to model virtually anything, it wouldn't get credit...

If the old thread has fallen off the 'first page' then I would favor a new thread. If the old thread is still easily visible, I favor adding to it. Find out if the old thread was closed by a moderator (and therefore is dropping off the front page) before you do anything; some conversations go badly, and you can review what happened.

My best practice suggestions: 1.) Search First: If the underlying material is something that may have been discussed in the past, do a search. If you have questions, they may already be answered. Old posts may already have comments relative to your discussion. If you decide that the thread is useful and you are going to Necro it, start your 'Raise Dead' post with something that acknowledges...
