"Always hungry, eh, Gob?" Olliver says to his fellow halfling with a smile. "I'm sure our friend Wendel doesn't mind sharing some of his lunch with us, which I assume is still inside the tower. Right, Wendel?" Winking at Gob, Olliver turns to the gnome, beaming with friendliness. For the others it may appear that Olliver focuses on Wendel a lot more than on the tower. Perception:

What more do you need? The main thing is that the player of a 1e Fighter has to come up with ideas as to what it's going to (try...

They all tend to define the character in terms of mechanically-rated abilities to perform certain tasks. They all tend to approach resolution in a fairly granular, "Did my attempt to do that work?" fashion. (D&D hp-attrition combat is an exception, but (i) it tends not to be generalised by D&D players to other spheres of action, except in 4e - skill challenges - which seem to have been rather...

Indeed. As a hater, here's my summary: if you want to play World of Warcraft, but you don't have a computer, then 4E D&D is the closest approximation. If you want to play Magic the Gathering, but all your friends would rather play a TRPG, then 4E D&D is the compromise.

If, in your setting, people only ever charge at each other, then you don't need AoO. If anyone ever turns and runs away, then either you want fleeing to reliably result in successfully ending contact, which is very different from real life; or you will want some version of AoO.

@mrpopstar, I like your system here. Some other thoughts when I think about it. • Make naked human Base AC 8 • Helmet +2 AC ( → AC 10) So a helmet works mechanically similar to a shield. This is a simple method to account for the importance of a helmet in combat. So that, in reallife, even someone in ‘light armor’ like a cloth gambeson should be wearing a metal helmet.

I would have the campaign revolve around something other than fighting this massive beast directly. Have the players go on a quest to secure a powerful siege weapon to defend a city that is under near constant siege by the beast. Have a wizard ask them to gather dragon scales from the creature's lair when it is away, so that he can start creating armors for the city's soldiers. Then spring a...

It's not so much that it's more complicated, as it is that the complexity is less useful. Rolling 1d20, or 3d6, is a way of getting a number between one and twenty (give or take) in order to determine binary pass/fail. Using 3d6 rather than 1d20 is slightly more complicated, and you have somewhat more control over the results. (Which is a perfectly reasonable trade-off, as far as game design...

I completely agree. A low magic game feels even more low magic if the only magic available is ritual magic. It gives magic more gravitas. You have to plan how and when and where to make the best use of a ritual. You can't just fly by the seat of your pants and cast whatever spell you need to save your ass. I have never really cared for the high magic aspect of D&D, especially once you get past...

Honestly, I tend to feel like rituals belong in an S&S game more than most other forms of D&D magic. The long, complex ceremony being the primary (or even only) form of functional magic is quite common in S&S tales.

In terms of the best, I would consider it a tie between Agonizing Blast and Devil's Sight. I only run ranged warlocks so Agonizing Blast is essential. But Devil's Sight is good for all PCs, even those with normal darkvision. For human PCs it is big. The worst is Sign of Ill Omen. Just terrible.

When I ran my Call of Cthulhu campaign, a lot of the plot revolved around the players figuring out how time travel worked in the campaign. First it manifested itself as a series of bizarre and spooky events. But eventually they came to understand the phenomenon, and started testing the rules, which uncovered even more spooky things in the process.

Kinda sorta. I find that clerics and druids get enough slots that they can generally have a few rituals in the bag if they want. But, really, I don't mind rituals all that much. Then again, simply ejecting all the full casters solved all those problems straight out, so, yeah, not an issue in this game.

Maybe you and the other people you play with are cautious types, but not everyone is like that. Like I said, I've seen games that *encourage* players to take on added risk and even invent complications themselves. I'm not talking about disastrous failures, just temporary setbacks. I think some people find that it adds tension and excitement to the game. Plus, there are often mechanical rewards...

Maybe some of this stuff is not in 5E because they held it back to make some sort of Wood Druid subclass, where these missing things would be abilities rather than spells, but they have just not had the chance to release it yet. Between warping wood, shaping wood, traveling between trees, animating and commanding trees (or other plant life), maybe even shapeshifting into a tree (think Treant)...

I think it is harder, but I think that is mostly due to character sheets usually having an entry for the damage. For example, the character sheet will have a space for your equipped weapon that reads: 1d8+1 damage. So you know you need to roll a D8. I suppose you could also list the dice needed for the check above the skill check, but that raises the question, why make it different in the...

Dragons are surprisingly squishy in 5E. A party not comprised of total morons can easily take on one at-level. If it's alone, they can probably "punch up" several CR levels. Even though there's stat blocks for them, I generally advise against running baby dragons. They're essentially intelligent children you're killing there. Sure, they'll grow up into capable death machines, but that's...

Karsten Crump Based on your red dragon hatchling stat block, I'm assuming your party is comprised of low-level PCs. What I've done in a similar scenario is treated the dragon as not so much a monster, and more as an event steering the adventure. For example, a red dragon attacks a fortified old town/freehold with labyrinthine streets built atop one another and several marginalized classes of...

Depending on how you like to play, Lore Bard 6 would also give you access to the spell, along with three more skills, two more with expertise, Jack of all trades, a wide range of spells, healing, and bardic inspiration. Going Ranger, though, definitely go to 5. (I would look specifically to Horizon Walker, which lets you convert your attack to Force damage).
