It is true I rarely get to play. That's more the result of being asked to run constantly. When I do get to play I really enjoy the luxury of inhabiting a single character. Often to the point where I forget about manipulating the game environment as a player (like using bennies in Deadlands or what Whimsy Card I was dealt). The joy of Champions is almost all the player authoring happens during...

Updating the Khalk'ru Working Draft. I'd omit the reference to the "rippling hole in the air" since the one in the story extended from a immense shard of yellow translucent stone which appears to be the material used to create items that summon Khalk'ru. Also, there are multiple uses of "black tentacles" and "black octopus" in the original text so we'd better refer to that hue. ...

Bonus points for not reading the post! :D Back on track, Id be interested too. Were basically talking a soundboard. I wonder if the way to do it is just to build a private collection of sounds and play them via a simple app. Are there any soundboard apps which let you add your own sounds? Im sure there must be.

Blue, thank you for taking the time to give feedback! I think you have a lot of good points. I am currently working on an updated version and I will try to address those points. Regarding XGtE Feats, the answer is that I just missed them. Regarding Mage Slayer, I thought that in a world with very few spell users, no one would have the chance to train to fight against them.

In our session today we had only 3 players (others couldn't make it) and so I suggested we try something different. I bought A Penny for My Thoughts years ago now - it has very catching visual design - but had never played it. But for whatever reason I've been re-reading it over the past week, and knowing that our crew would be a bit short I brought it along. The premise of the game is that...

Hmm. Briefly thinking about it, mechanically and thematically, perhaps we could drop the damage down to 1D10 and have it increase per round to a maximum of 3D8 (Turn 1 = 1D10, Turn 2 2D10, Turn 3+ = 3D10). So, the first turn it performs less favourably compared to other damage dealing 1st level spells and becomes decent when sustained, with the cost being the range, the investment of...

I think this relates to hawkeyefan upthread asking "Is it binary?" (ie player- vs GM-driven play). I guess it can be non-binary in the sense that the GM adapts whatever it was s/he wrote in advance to respond to the player agendas - but then what work is the GM-driven stuff doing on that occasion of play? I think this also relates to the distinction between prep and pre-authorship. Having...

I still think "actor stance" is a red herring. You don't need to step out of actor stance to declare "I search the study for the map" or "I look around the room for a vessel to catch the blood." But that doesn't tell us how to resolve those action declarations.

Is any of the above controversial? I don't think so. But given that what you describe is basically inherent in RPGing (except perhaps the most degenerate games imaginable), it seems to set a baseline for player agency. So it can't really count as a large amount of it. I have talked repeatedly about "agency in respect of the content of the shared fiction". That's what I'm talking about. It...

I think its worth noting that there is no off hand in 5e. The TWF seems to not leave any leeway - the first attack(s) with either hand is the Attack Action and the bonus action is with the other hand but does not precede the attack action. I think an argument can be made for a 5th level fighter with extra attacks taking an attack action, making one attack as part of that action, making the...

Okay, shall we decide on Spell Resistance next? The original had 40% Magic Resistance, which according to 1E AD&D rules would match SR 20 since an 11th level caster would have to roll 9+ to beat it. That seems a reasonable number, although I'd be willing to entertain another figure.

Reading the Island of War rules for rituals it says that clan priests learn them as 1st-level spells instead of using NWP slots. That would seem to support using bless as a substitute since it's a 1st-level cleric spell.

I'm thinking maybe the create wicker guardian is a separate spell while the wooden/stone/winged guardians just use the "standard" spell. i.e. either: "The type of juggernaut the caster can create is based on their caster level; at 7th level the caster can create a wooden juggernaut, at 9th level they can create...

I'm on the generous side. Rather than looking at each hand independently and using discrete draw/sheathe item interactions, I treat "switching load outs" as a single item interaction. You can basically swap out what's in each of your hands for free. So you could stow your bow, draw a sword, and swing the sword all on the same turn. Hell, you could draw two swords at the same time in the middle of...

The sheet doesn't offer any options to add more passive skills. Adding that feature is not easy, because it would mean finding space on the sheet, of which there is none left, so something else would have to be removed. For now there are no plans for adding more passive skills. I personally don't find passive skill listing so useful, because it is the GM that needs it, not the player, and the GM...

Most of those read like not-insignificant class abilities. Some of them are practically allowing an entire extra turn as a reaction. To my mind, a 5ft step in response to a situation may be OK for a reaction. Not a full move + action. Bard: this is very much stepping on what inspiration does. simply copying what an already existing class feature does is unnecessary. Fighter: If they are...

Swapping does not happen much however, so I cannot eve recall the particular rules offhand. I do recall that both sheathing and drawing require some sort of action in 4E.

I've seen games where you can sheath & draw as a single action, and don't feel that it's OP or anything, I just prefer characters dropping weapons to switch. This can sometimes lead to dynamic combats, where characters have to run back for their dropped weapons, or sometimes leave them behind during a chase/withdrawal.

I've felt like the spell just needs to have a longer "leash range" than its original range. Like, you still need to be within 30 feet to cast it, but it doesn't break until the target moves out beyond, say, 60 feet. Once breaking the arc is non-trivial, I think it becomes much more versatile. I'd like for every damage roll to scale, like with good old flaming sphere. But that's kinda insane...
