Maybe if you’re a computer that is only programmed to understand lack of change in terms of reduction by 0. Which would be a terrible way to program a computer. But that aside, you are a human being who understands English, so “your HP total doesn’t change” gives you sufficient information to perform the appropriate action (or more accurately lack of action) on your character sheet. You know, the...

You are claiming nets interact with hit points and I say they don't. If you agree with the point I made, then you are agreeing that nets don't interact with hit points. I feel you truly don't really understand the difference between the two. 8 pages of debate seems to be demonstrating this.

Given the context of the conversation that is a non answer. We both agree that your hp total doesn’t change. But a non changing hp total only makes sense as an answer to “how much hp did you lose” if and only if the non changing hp total actually means 0 hp were lost. Otherwise you’ve failed to answer the how many hp was lost question. So do you equate a non change in hp to losing 0 hp. If...

It's sadder still, the saddest in fact, that you continue to persist when you are the only one who doesn't seem to grasp the simple concept that a net doesn't have to do "0 damage" when it doesn't deal damage as its effect. And, for the record, the question has been answered several times by more than myself, you simply can't accept it because it doesn't satisfy your, um... understanding.

Yes, it was a fun, flavourful player-driven extension of the narrative. Korrigan has been working on this in the background for a long time - since his days courting journalists and politicos in Flint, but more pointedly since Sentacore came on board. It was nice to see it all come to fruition.

EDIT: Whoops, someone necro'd this thread so I'm replying to something from 2014. +1 to spell attack rolls, DCs, INT skills (which the wizard is likely the only one good at), initiative and subclass features is not marginal when taken together. So for the first 11 levels (where the majority of play happens) the dwarf is behind, and then they have to spend part of their 12th level ASI. ...

Considering that the majority of actual games don't hit 12th (see the D&D Beyond breakdown from last month), that means in your average game the dwarf will never catch up to a +INT race in terms of their primary casting ability. Note that in addition to Spell Attacks and DCs, greater INT helps with a number of skills that the wizard is the nly one that is likely to be good at, and is used in...

The wording seems off a bit. If a planar lord, which is a NPC in my game, cast planar ally spell, then of-course he could summon his own followers to his side. This would be a normal use of the ability. The other way I was reading it involved him summoning himself, which I thought was just a cheap teleport and not worth it when he can summon allies to even the odds.

At our table, if you smile, the DM kills your character and doesn't even grin while doing it. (j/k) Like most were are fairly serious but jokes happen. Our DM puts a lot of time into the game and makes up most of the adventures himself, so he appreciates it when we play seriously much of the time.

Mathematically, you have introduced a much greater variance. You are heading in the opposite direction of your stated goal. This is because the variance isn't about the number, it's about the boolean pass/fail nature of it. It doesn't matter if you succeed by 1 or succeed by 8. Only if you pass or fail. Therefore, the only variance you are actually looking at is the one right under the...

The correct answer is that your HP total does not change. Nothing has occurred that can cost loss (or gain, for that matter) of HP, so the question of how much HP you lose is irrelevant. You’re trying to make the equation X - 0 = X, but it just isn’t. There is no subtraction occurring, so there is no equation. If you insisted on writing out what is happening in mathematical terms, you would...

It's totally a manufactured problem, a self-inflicted wound, that comes from setting a requirement that a character needs to know something to take action. You don't need to know that gargoyles are weak to adamantine to hit a statue with an adamantine...

I disagree with the bolded statement. Damage causes loss of HP, it is not defined as loss of HP. You can lose HP to sources other than damage, such as level 4 exhaustion. HP is a resource, and damage is a game state that causes loss of that resource. When that resource is not being lost, it is not because a source has caused damage in the amount of 0, it is because no source has dealt damage,...

No, no. I made a “lie without being detected roll” on the NPC’s behalf, and provide the clue only if that roll fails. Unless maybe you are suggesting that the fact that I rolled a die behind the screen is the clue? In which case, eh. I don’t see that as a big problem. NPCs lying is not the only reason I roll things behind the screen. If the player wants to make that inference, that’s their...

My campaigns always include a great deal of humor. We have our moments of suspense, romance and drama. But there is always room to laugh as well. My players aren't in-character 100% of the time, and there's plenty of room for OC-jokes and remarks at the table. But then there are the epic moments as well. The moments where one of the players comes up with an amazing speech, or does something...

Besides the fact that AC is never altered after any kind of attack, Let’s try again: DM Taran: you get hit by a net Player Frogreaver: Oh no! How will that affect my bonds and Flaws! Do I have to change them? DM Taran: no. Nets can’t affect your bonds and flaws. I can keep on listing all the things nets don’t affect. If a player is going to keep asking me the same questions, I will...

Same question. I need to know how much Armor Class to write on my character sheet after the net attack that you said caused me to lose N/A Armor Class. I don't know how to modify my Armor Class by a loss of N/A to write the new value on my character sheet. (The correct answer is not N/A. It is 0. I know how to modify my hp and AC by a loss of 0. Modifying my hp or AC by a value of N/A...

If a player didn't know the definition of N/A, I probably would have to dumb down a lot of the game. I'm pretty sure you would understand that if I told you that. Let's use a more appropriate example that has to do with your character. Nets have nothing to do with Armour Class. They, literally, can't affect your Armour Class. Just as they cannot affect your Hit Points. There...

PlayerFrogReaver: HP's are applicable to my character though. I need to know how much hp to write on my character sheet after the net attack that you said caused me to lose N/A hp. I don't know how to modify my hp by a loss of N/A to write the new value on my character sheet.

She was full on Cleric in her 1e write-up, but she had no access to spells or anything else divine because plot. I honestly think Bard would be good, especially since her song within the Inn of the Last Home was what caused everything to go to crap. While that would possibly work with giving her the Entertainer background, that would cut her out from having the Noble background. Since Bards in 5e...

The only definition of actor stance that I'm familiar with is Ron Edwards's: In Actor stance, a person determines a character's decisions and actions using only knowledge and perceptions that the character would have. This is a particular mode of or orientation towards action declaration. It says nothing about who gets to decice what knowledge and perception the character would have. ...

Yes. DM Taran: "HPs are not applicable to nets, that's why there's a '-' instead of a damage value. Don't worry about it. Please make a check to avoid being restrained." Your formula about 0hp value has no bearing on nets. There's also a mathematical formula about weather systems. It also has no bearing on nets in D&D. So you might as well be arguing about the weather with me. It...

This is why I find forced attempts at humor in published adventures unnecessary. Most groups will find humor coming organically from the game, sometimes to break the tension, sometimes due to the absurdity of the situation (or a silly character name.) The adventures themselves should play as straight as possible, the players bring the zany (if that’s what they want).

This may sound funny, but a Critical Role episode plays about like one of my groups’ normal D&D games - at times serious, mixed with a bit of humor, foul language, and totally inappropriate humor. :) The occasional epic role-playing moment manages to find its way in there as well.

Athas is an interesting place. Look through all of the art in the original boxed set and the different supplements, you will see figures that look like they are from the 17th or 18th Centuries. The previous ages, the Blue and Green Ages, are almost totally forgotten, society has broken down so much that history has disappeared. I think a printing press could be found there, maybe even a steam...

I would say that a minuscule chance exists for a PC to misread an NPC, even if they are telling the truth. It’s possible, especially if the NPC is normally a very smooth liar. My spot-ruling would be “if the person is familiar to you, it’s an automatic success. In any other circumstance and the NPC is trying to be actually truthful, it’s a DC 5 check.” And of course, the DC is secret (as well...

If the NPC isn't trying to lie then no roll, simply say there are no signs they are lying. That said, not all NPC's that lie should allow for an Insight check to determine it either. Sometimes their lie is just so good that they tell it so well that no amount of insight is going to be able to determine it's a lie.
