Bad analogy. Very bad. The threat in a dnd combat of a downed foe rising is a direct one to me now... Not a threat to my horse back in the stables. However, in ttuth, most of my savvy foes who think about such things *use* the downed foe as a resource. Pcs throwing AoE? Stand over the PC for who that's an automatic death save and maybe they change their tune. Or

By general rules, enchantments are not inheretly impacted by an immunity to charm... but most are due to the language of the enchantments. Of your example spells, only command functions normally on a creature immune to charm. Many spells, like dominate person, specify "while you are charmed" - meaning that you may have an active dominate spell on the target, but the spell has no impact as the...

I think your edit lays out the logic that leads to jasper and cmad's emphatic answers. Since those other spells don't impose the charmed condition, and have no language that discuss an interaction with charm immunity, I see no reason to extend such immunity to those spells, either.

Actually, MacConnell, you reminded me of something; when using magical modes of flight, you can't "run," i.e., you can't "fly faster," but creatures (such as birds) with natural flight speeds CAN. Thus, the Eagle (which has an 80) can "run" at a rate of 320, which as I said above, is 37 miles per hour. But using the run rules requires more math: So, assuming you don't push yourself, you...

If all goblins in the room were either dead or unconscious, there would have been no initiative for me to begin with. So if they decided to kill the sleeping goblins, then by DM ruling, they are dead, with no chance to wake up. The only exception would be how rushed the PCs were acting, since they knew there were more coming. In that case, I would have had them roll a D20 for each goblin and only...

But I can't say that across all of the 5e campaigns I've played that we've *ever* gotten multiple +X weapons for all the characters. Maybe one would find an upgrade, or someone trade in the short sword +1 for a rapier +2, but usually people went most of the campaign with the same...

I don't feel that's quite right. A meta-game is a game about the game - chargen/level-up CharOp is a meta-game, for instance, one you could 'win' before play even began. Imbalanced games generate meta-games that leverage (or, for that matter evade or correct) their imbalances, but even they don't quite 'force' them - incentivize them heavily the more profound the imbalance, sure, but not...

One thing many people objected to was that 4E forced the meta-game too much. If they had come up with some other mechanic, maybe it would have been better. For example, if a fighter had stamina points and powers required so much stamina to use it would have been more palatable. But powers were structured like spells, were "expended" like spells, in most cases had mystical effects. Until...

Most homicides don't have 4-6 other people standing around ready to attack you after you drop one person. Most homicides are 1-on-1 and the "stabbed 20+ times" generally means someone raged out on a person they had personal issues with. But yeah, if a gnoll or a troll catches someone alone, they very well might make sure to finish them off (or pull an arm off to chew on in the case of the...

I pretty much never see PCs double-tapping their enemies; it's a poor tactic, since monsters and NPCs rarely have healing, and it costs an attack that could have been aimed at an active foe. So I figure their enemies aren't likely to double-tap PCs... mostly. Exceptions: If an intelligent enemy has seen a fallen PC get healed and jump back in the fight, they will start to double-tap. Also,...

As a DM, I'd want the PC to have the invisibility spell. If the character does not "reappear" if they attack or cast a spell, I'd require improved invisibility. For making magic items, I require PCs to spend as much as it would cost to buy them, generally. For potions and scrolls, I use the minimum cost for the range of the magic items (with some tweaking). By asking to take disadvantage, they asked to be allowed to select fromadditional options which produced success probabilities that were...

Yes, my comment was more irritation with Otto's than any critique of your assessment. Splint Enchantment is decent overall. I still maintain that that the Improved Minor Illusion feature is very circumstantial, borderline useless though. I see at as Orange at best, maybe red.

NPC hacker? Wait, did no one make a hacker?? Oof. Damn. That's super tempting. If I can get something up today maybe, lol... Thanks for the note on Orthoskin! This version of Shadowrun doesn't have Technomancers, does it? :)

Dude, I'm playing in 15 different PbP games because I'm 50 and have no time for face to face (other than 4 hours a week on Fantasy Grounds). I don't need notifications to keep track of games. I just have two (out of 40-50 or so) tabs open in Chrome ALL THE TIME. On is the Play-by-post Center subforum where I can click of playing the game or talking the talk. The other thread is the equivalent...

Considering hit points are a function of level, and level is a function of lived experience, I could certainly see an argument for amnesia depleting your hit points in a D&D setting.

True, though in this case only two of them needed to disengage (the two next to the cleric). The other two were at the door to the goblin warren. Definitely a great monster trait. I got a lot of mileage out of it last night. The PCs paid for every inch of ground they took from the fleeing goblins. They were definitely pressed for time. Seven more goblins were preparing a counterattack from...

Doesn't that make adventuring even more about leveling/acquiring boons, in that you not only get exp for adventuring, which means you level, but need to set out on adventures that will get you to level the way you want? And, I know 'story now' is not exactly all about creating J. Michael Stravinsky 5-year story arcs, but it does seem like it could be a stretch to get a genre story out of that.

That’s interesting! IMX the number one reservation new players give is “but I don’t know how to play / there’s so many rules.” I sell them on trying it out by telling them the rules are for me to run the game and all you have to worry about is what your adventurer actually does. Actually, I think the number one reservation might be “isn’t this for nerds?” LOL

I went mad on the last kickstarter - $4K+. However, I have not gotten all of my stuff in from it and I am frustrated they are starting another kickstarter before having delivered the last one. The current trade policy/war with China has me nervous too - I think it has the potential to cause BIG problems for this KS. With all that in mind, assuming there are some pieces I MUST HAVE - I plan on...

That portmanteau just doesn't flow the way "Diplomancer" did. "Intimancer" isn't any better.... I think D&Ders were already doing that when the most sophisticated video game was still Asteroids. I could make a crack about what happens when you go off the edge in an old videogame, but actually I think that's a pretty reasonable idea. At least, while the combat's still going on. Once...

I use popcorn initiative at my adult’s table and they are very, very careful about the turn order in order to manage the inflow of adverse actions. In the case of sleep, I’ve seen them pass initiative to sleeping combatants first, to ensure they’re locked out of an action that round. If I were running group/side initiative, I believe I would contrive things to make sure that slept...

In the CR situation, iirc, the death wound up having nothing to do with the disadvantsge question. Iirc the attack chosen would have bern disad due to range anyway. So, i am not sure how this technique of yours would innoculate against that. Right now my table are all long term players, tho a big gap in rule fu. But recent games had them along with first time rpg players. Having the...

I did - but I don't agree with your conclusion. Changing the range of probable outcomes is exactly what a player wants to do when they take advantage of disadvantage. Saying that they're only allowed to play within the original range of success probability (and not the entire range of possibility) seems like a constraint you're adding to make your argument stronger?

It's all poor editing about his parents, but all modules and supplements, including the 5e material, refer to Strahd as "Count." Per AD&D Domains of Dread, this appears by choice (describing Strahd as choosing not to rule like a prince or king). So here's the inconsistencies about his parents: First, there may be confusion about Prime Material Barovia and Dark Domain Barovia. Per the...

I said “I might...” meaning that is a possible outcome. But to be clear, if I am not sure about what a player intends to do, I ask them. In my role as adjudicator, I am committed to faithfully carrying out the action they declare. As in the above example, if the player clarified that feeble attack was just a narrative demonstration of their fear, I would go with that but not charge them...
