I tell players who want specific ranges and distances when in a fluid combat and not looking from a birds eye view above the combat that they know this guy is behind that guy but you don't have a laser range finder to nail down exact distances.

The Roshambo combat approach is helpful for that. Players just need to know what category of distance theyíre in to make decisions: far, near, engaged. Itís a great system IMHO

In my experience when people are feeling like the game is going very slow while playing with a grid, going theater of the mind speeds things up. But if they're already fine with how things are going with a grid, then it's not an issue. Asking where they are isn't that big an issue for a group that is already taking way too long with a grid. The answer of "close enough to hit someone" is...

Ekossigan is a creature that is willing to execute children en masse to get what he wants - and it isn't just something he is about to do, it is something *he has already started doing*. Before the constables can arrive on the scene, he has already killed an orphan boy. I don't think Ekossigan values mortal life, I don't think it is even a consideration for him, and negotiations shouldn't have...

Regardless, my calculations is that you were three messages from unanimous agreement, but that progress is now ruined. So sad. At least we can all agree that if you leap, rather than jump, the opposite answer is correct.

GreenKarl, I just took another look at the Weapon Focus talent (on the Adept tree Magical Focus). It says, "Weapon focus must be based on the PHB melee (only) simple or martial weapons and cannot have the Keen Blade upgrades listed in equipment." Does the word "only" refer to wespons in the PHB, to melee weapons, or both (melee weapons in the PHB)?

You may be more fixated on his use of "railroad" here - likely due to its pejorative connotation - but keep in mind that the "/" designates "and or," with the first element in that phrase being "GM-driven play" and I would personally place greater emphasis in what pemerton said on that than "railroad." I would estimate that a lot of GM-driven play does entail "being stuck at a door," because it...

There is nothing wrong with making the game extremely lethal as long as everyone at the table is in agreement. If you feel the need to pad out HP a bit, then just give them more hit points (maybe max HP per HD, which is...

Now, some express concerns about multiclassing being too artificial. Perhaps that is because you can "suddenly" take on a class which seems to...

There's a notable lack of DM assertiveness when framing scenes and encounters, ending encounters, and triggering the respective transitions between them. I suspect a lot of DMs fear they'll impinge player agency if they tug at the reigns too often, so they'll often let the game drift almost...

I think the idea of "being stuck at a closed door" is mostly a feature of GM-driven/railroad play. In "story now" play, the story just is that the PCs didn't go through that door, so some other thing happened. I don't know what Matt Colville has to say about it, but the structure of a skill challenge serves the same purpose as the structure of combat resolution: it establishes a mechanical...

I've found the opposite. The grid can let players instantly know where they are in relation to the bad guys. Some players, in TotM, will ask at the start of every one of their turns for a precise tabulation of where the bad guys are, how many feet apart the two bad guys are from each other, etc. So I found that often the grid is actually faster.

Of course, given that I'm not sure what you're trying to say, I could be wrong about that.

Sure, but the problem IMHO is that I think that 100 percent pure Actor Stance is an inherent impossibility. In the context of theatrical drama, the Actor is a also a part-time Author and Director. The Actor is interpreting the character, but that interpretation will be guided by their own Authorial sense. And we may take "Authorial sense" here as a conglomeration of the Actor's understanding of...

Rogue's Gallery: The Tundra Wolves There are many sky pirate outfits in Alyeska, ranging from little more than bandits with a couple of planes through to successful gangs with their own airships. A group known as the Banshees have already been covered and have even made an appearance in the Frozen Skies campaign that I'm currently running. Another gang that has featured in the campaign and...

I think they should have been, on the off chance that I ever get to run a 2e game again that is what I'll make them. It wouldn't even matter if NWP weren't used, thieves would still get them.

It can. It's just slightly more cosmetic than you might expect. If you paint someone's left hand red, then they can see that their left hand is red, even if it doesn't affect their performance in any way. It's the same thing, just applied to physical injury. If you give someone a small cut on their arm, then you wouldn't necessarily expect that to affect their combat performance at all, but...

It's never actually happened in one of my games, but I don't have a problem with low level characters dying if that's how the dice roll. Better they die at low level, before the players become too attached to them, and the possibility of death serves to make the peril real and the game more exciting. (If anything 5e makes adventuring too safe). As it happens, whilst the party in my current...

Just a minor quibble: With only 2 uses per long rest, Portent is rather less potent if you actually use the 6 encounters between long rests guideline.

Umbran #9 Exactly this, i once did Castle Forlorn, a small ravenloft domain campaign, with very forgiving Players thankfully where the Players could not know history of the place and ran into lots of Trouble: Potential Spoiler: The Castle has 3 different states in 3 different times, as well as the arch Nemesis of the Setting who has 3 different forms at each Point in time. All of that is...

I stick to the RAW. I have no issues with the death save mechanic. I have no issues killing players at low levels. I'm a big fan of the funnel system where players start with four level-0 PCs. From any that survive the first adventure, they chose the once to make a 1st-level character with. The idea is that everyone is going to have at least one of the four characters die and their is a chance...

here's a story idea Tetragrammaton manages to break through the Great Wall, and does not challenge the Supreme Being Shesha, nay, instead he goes to the very edge of the omniverse and shouts insults directed towards some "Darkness," seeing that you too have broken through Kuvachim, you decide to investigate. (upon arriving at YHVH's locale) "Come on 'Magnum Tenebrosum!' You're more powerful...

Both scenarios are fine, and neither requires meta-gaming. They just assume different things about how the world works. If the world doesn't actually work as described, and the character doesn't know those things, then the player would be meta-gaming by acting on that knowledge. Hit Points are observable to the character. He knows how tough he is, and can approximate how hard he'll hit the...

I'm running CoS now. I started with the adventure as written (AAW) but let things evolve based on the party's actions. I don't see the need to remove anything. Let the party explore. One thing I love about CoS is that the number of locations and plot threads and the tarot-reading mechanic allow it to play very differently from one campaign to the next. Let the characters by their actions...

Honestly, if anything, I think NWPs should have been d100% like thief skills You actually saw this in the Buck Rogers RPG< which was basically 2e in space. Basically you had skill % plus related ability score (like a 15 dex would give a 15% bonus) plus a class bonus, and then multiply by difficulty (2x for easy, 1/4 for impossible and various in between). However, I think that's probably...

Free resting means the resource game of D&D becomes trivial (i.e. the only challenge left is for a single encounter to be so deadly it threatens to kill a player character; which is a spice best used sparingly), so I'd advise against it. I'd suggest having the Tomb power the undead to be re-raised every night, making it pointless to kill Tomb Guardians or Withers. If the repair crews are...

He was not torn limb from limb as he was back then Ė a fate which Uriel only narrowly avoided during...

While I don't share his fervor, I will admit that I partially agree with Gladius's original point. EA has long been known for "slash and burn" practices when purchasing game studios and IP. I believe that business model is generally a Bad Thing. It's bad for devoted fans, who get increasingly inconsistent products. It's bad for innovative creators that have to see their content degrade as...

You mean download an image, put into the images folder of your campaign, click the images button and share it? I mean, some images, like maps, are DM only, so sharing explicitly is needed. Takes me under 5 seconds, it is not like remembering a name you just gave it is hard and you can organize the images quickly. FG has not had tabs for quite a while, it has drop down sections now. Images are...
