So just to be clear - the reason you treat rules as guidelines is because the rules clearly and explicitly told you to way back in the day? That's like a zen moebius strip of cause-effect. Nice.

Without the Pope to crown Charlemagne Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (and in fact without Christianity as a reason to continue the conceit of the Roman Empire to stay off the Apocalypse predicted in Nebuchadnezzar's dream), you don't have any Germanic Empire, even a notional one. Also, why are you referring to "Norse" gods? They're simply the Germanic gods that got pushed to Europe's...

I agree with Blue As my sorc has progressed, I have plans and options and candidate lists for mc options, feats, spells etc but it really keeps coming down to an "in-character" choice at the time and those are often not following the grand scheme. Definitely, something a full tier away, it's extremely likely the decision points will be very different than they seem now. Real play vs...

I love to play the character creation mini-game so I get where you're coming from. But my real advice is: whatever you pick at 10th will really be based on the dynamics of your party. Which might not even be the same characters as it is now. So be flexible and evaluate at that point. But, in the spirit of being helpful, some thoughts for now. First, he's an (outdated but still good) list...

It says the party travels in the wrong direction and gets lost, but the only real penalty is to spend 1d6 hours trying to get back on course after which the navigator can try the check again. To me, this is very unsatisfying because the fiction about the ...

Yes, correct. The vent is down at least 100 feet below the ice surface above. The ice sheet is actually thicker in a lot of places but there was some tectonic activity that shifted/broke up a large line where then a number of thermal vents opened thinning it out. Its still subzero temps up above and would require repelling at least that down to get here. Someone would have noticed a hopper coming...

I think leveling up works so well for D&D because it's partly a very human story: You are called to adventure. You go forth to face your fears. You overcome them and, in the doing, become more capable as a result. That is a tale we tell each other over and over again and with good reason because it's a story of an optimal mode of acting in the world. Tying that to character abilities instead of...

To examine those problematic elements and why they’re there. I mean, I love Tolkien...

Part of me really applauds the wonderful world building and the tying together of multiple story threads. Part of me is saying, "When you go that big, you don't make the problem seem more epic; you make it seem less." I have a suspicion though now about where things are going, and I think it is going to make up for my disappointment with shrinking his scale by making the problem bigger.

Just to be clear, I wasn't necessarily suggesting running SKT or PoA without leveling, just using them as examples of a long term, multi-tiered campaign format. Here's a thing I think is important to the idea: enemies do not have to level up either. You don't need to fight goblins, then orcs, then ogres if they are all filling the same niche in the story. It can always be orcs. Or, it can be...

I don't think I'd play in a campaign without some type of mechanical character progression, personally. I mean, it could have been prescriptive in that regard, and people would have complained about DM agency and boxed text and the like. I don't personally mind being left to figure that stuff out for myself.

Oh gods. Can you imagine what the suicide rate at WotC would be if their unofficial games took place in FR too? That would be like having your company's CEO as a perma-player in your game. (Takes the red pill.) "We're gonna need a signal soon, Tank!" "He's going into arrest!" (Goes down the rabbit hole.) Welcome, Jack, to the real (RPG) world.

Some very interesting perspectives here. I think alot of you guys may be right about my feelings towards it are coloured by the fact I don't use any of it. In the interim, I ran into a very nice guy who just opened a gaming store not too far from my office. I bought him a box of random obscure RPGs, games, and duplicate books, and he gave me a fair deal for them. He also is running campaigns and...

I admit, especially with AD&D2E, I was quite the house ruler. Even house rules for "I think X would be cool" have to be taken with a grain of "can I already do that with the written rules?".

Speaking for myself, after the fair amount of research I did into all of the folks left (I didn't want to downvote any of the name I already recognized) it came down to simple guilt by association. "Great buds with H.P. Lovecraft" is not a descriptor that endears one to me, personally. I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but most of the feminist critiques I've read of Kay (one...

We ant' broken through to the surface anywhere and ye'd have to cut through at least a hundred feet of ice just to gets to ground and then cut down to the tunnels. I don't rightly knows how they got here before the hopper."

Thank you for that info. Everything I was saying before is incorrect - it is quite well telegraphed that this is no normal baddie, even for newer player not familiar with the lore.

Lindar accepts the honey-cake with a nod and takes a few small bites. He gave Ursa a slight smile and thanked her before wrapping it up and placing it in a pouch at his side. He seemed to consider Ulfred's words carefully and after a moment replied "It would be most unusual for outsiders to be granted access to our Halls on their first visit, even with Kin amount you numbers. Let me consider it...

Hi friends! I’m gonna run an OSR game of Cursed Chateau for some friends in October. About half of them have never played any form of D&D. The other half have played for plenty of time. i was curious if anyone had ran this adventure and, if so, if they had any thoughts on what worked and what did not? It seems a little obtuse and I might add a liiiiiiiiiitle narrative to it just to make...

Hriston Your example honestly just makes me wonder "Where is the fun in that?" You don't let your players roll and the consequence of failure is only one additional sentence from the DM that says they are still in the forest and some time lost. I mean then you could just tell your player to roll survival and then make the roll result simply translate to time lost. Then at least the player has...

Absolutely. LBB Traveller and FATE (pre-Core) are both level-less and (with D&D) represent the three main RPGs that have defined by gaming life.

I don't play with the sorts of people who would want to drink while doing so. Also, I play at a local coffee shop, so bringing in alcohol would be infeasible anyway.

As much as I love his books, if Martin and Rothfuss ostensibly got taken out for long delays in their book release schedule, Lynch at least deserves a ding for his five years. Hahahah, "terpinate!" At my home game, there is generally alcohol, though no one goes crazy with it. As a DM, I’ll imbibe, but well within my limits. 1-2 drinks during a four-hour session. The last time I got snookered while DMing was back in 4e, which was most definitely the wrong system to be attempting to wrangle while inebriated. I had an enemy they had thoroughly killed show up again...
