So I was realizing that there is really little reason for most player characters to wield the weaker weapons. Obviously this makes sense, since DPR is king. But I was thinking of how to increase the liklihood of players wanting to use these weapons while also making the concept on more equal footing with other weapon choices. That lead me to creating the following fighting style: Swift...

Again, look at the XGtE at the Warlock of the Archfey. 11 HD. 1 6th level spell and 3 5th level slots. Clearly based upon an 11th level Warlock. CR 4. This reflects the modern valuation as applied in a recent book to the specific class in question, rather than the valuation placed at the start of the edition on 'monster' builds for other classes. As we posit that Lorenzo is 9th rather...

Here's a 3rd edition version: This exotic weapon resembles a composite longbow but is designed to be used with stirrups, with the archer holding the bow in her feet and drawing it with one or both hands. like a composite longbow. All footbows are made with a particular strength rating, and if your STR bonus is less, you attack with -2 . A default bow requires a 10 STR or higher. Each point of...

Whether it says that in 5e somewhere or not, I have no idea. It probably comes from an earlier edition, and the goblins in my world haven't changed, even if the MM or Volo's Guide or whatever decides to make them different. Cowardly or not, though, I was thinking about it, and it's an interesting question regardless. You're in the midst of battle, are put to sleep by a spell, and then are...

That's why you throw the sword up in the air and it slow-mo tumbles end over end while you get off the spell, then catch it when it comes back down. Badass. The thing is, there was imminent danger. The safer move by the player in that situation given the initiative order would have been to let sleeping goblins lie. The odds were on his side that he would have killed that goblin. Only he...

Instead, I think it will be because they are younger, learned about 5e from streams, and are less likely to participate in bulletin boards. They are over on Twitch, YouTube, and maybe Reddit. This has me thinking about mapping. In the days when we use to have one or more players try to keep a map as we explored, it gave life to the sense of exploration. Why is that gap there? Is there a secret room? Just rock? Did I mess up in my mapping? Most players today, however, find mapping to be a slog and it does slow down the game. VTTs with partial review and fog of war is not the same. What...

I see "roleplay" as anything you choose to have your character do while playing the game which might include battling some orcs (combat), talking to the quirky, cagey NPC (social interaction), or searching the door for traps and listening to see if you can hear anything on the other side (exploration). This avoids the perception that other people might have that combat isn't roleplaying, when it...

Following the rapid, almost comically swift dispatch of 'Rakshasa Stanfield', the players were surprised to discover that that was it - they had finished adventure 9. The timing was perfect - the fact that we simply could not fit the 'final twist' in the end of session 61 worked to make it seem like it must be the true finale. The 'Brave New World'...

There are a lot of assumptions but if I'm correct and Lorenzo himself was a CR 7 then the encounter XP was in the 7,100 range. A deadly encounter for 5 characters is 5,500 - so doable but with difficulty - though adjusting for the number of foes (5 vs. 7) it's really much worse than that and dips into double the deadly territory, though the surprise round could be said to overcome that. ...

Given that we're talking magical sleep where creatures can and do wake up instantly, I don't have that big of a problem with the idea the group would want to take them all out at once. D&D is my favourite fantasy world simulator, but it's far from perfect. Ultimately we have to accept the limitations of a pen and paper game. Readying an action is just the way you implement the group looking...

Howdy folks! Although it's now available for the HERO System, ICONS, BASH!, Supergame, and SUPERS! Revised, the Superverse has its origins The Freedom Ring and The Iron Gauntlet - two character books I published for SUPERS! first edition. Artist and game designer Russ Boyd did the art and character designs on those two books, so he's really the co-creator of the original characters. Heck, he...

Every adventure they published had some background and story to it, however thin. But my point was that his example specifically references ignoring or adjusting the die roll for the purpose of more exploration that “would be particularly exciting.” If you want to choose to believe that there was no story (which we know is not the case for all people playing D&D at the time because prior to...

It's pretty much the same idea, phrased differently. If magic is possible, it's a magical universe. There's no way for magic to exist as some sort of "plug-and-play" extension that attaches to an otherwise mundane universe in a way that makes sense, despite genre conceits. (I'd allow that exceptions exist if the magic is actually some sort of highly advanced science, like in Mark Lawrence's...

There is Cyber-Psychic Alignment that lets you ignore Strain. I might be open to healing it but would have to figure out what is a fair way. In Shadowrun is was VERY dangerous for mages to use Sim patches, etc. as in the early days it lead to Burn-Out, which is something I kind of liked. But maybe... The issue I have is goodness of fit with the DM on the part of players. There should be a discussion. I have no issue if a DM cannot fathom a cleric/warlock. It is in fact their world. Whether or not I play in their world is another matter! A lot of the hard line "no!" we see is based on what a particular person (DM) thinks about the role of classes in their world. I have no problem with...

    1. By that point, Borne is complete. All it does is make it slightly harder for Ob folks to cross, but it doesn't stop them. 2. The GM would have a sympathetic NPC go with them. They'd be spotted by shadow trolls and guards, the GM would run a frantic scene where a troll tears apart the sympathetic NPC, and the party has to run like hell to escape as the transition slowly fades them back to...

Do tell. If you mean that attack rolls against the person prone have disadvantage unless within 5', remember that there may be attackers within 5'. I'm thinking of dragons with minions etc.

Absolutely, I mention the ready option in another reply. My issue, though, is that it causes the game to get caught up in the minutia of the rules to figure out how we can ensure the goblins won’t get their turn and gain a potential chain reaction like that. I’d rather focus on the fiction than the rules.

It’s never slowed down our campaigns when O still used initiative, going back to AD&D. But to each their own. I’d prefer to never see combat on a grid ever again. But that wouldn’t be enough to make me choose not to play either.

Responsibility for PCs making sense is on the players. If the player cannot make sense of, say, a Pal/War multi-class, then don't do it. But if a player can make sense of it, then multi-class away! That's how it should be. But on this thread and others, I see a depressing tendency of, "I can't make sense of it, therefore you are not allowed to do it!" How dare you stomp on my...

Yeah, in a world where goblins have been at war with humans, elves, dwarves, and other intelligent races including spellcasters, I wouldn’t even question it. However, a cowardly goblin stopping to help its “weaker” friends? More importantly, creatures often don’t wake up instantly. To stop while there’s an imminent threat when you don’t know if the others are alive or whether they’ll wake up...

Use this as a reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_military_personal_equipment From that, looks like for armor any of chain shirt, scale mail, breastplate or chain mail would be acceptable. Weapons should most likely be short sword, dagger and javelin. For late Empire, replace short sword with long sword and javelin with spear. Definitely want to use a shield. Subclass should...

Agreed - though the dirty secret is that AD&D adventures were pretty much all like this, it's just that nobody remembers the really crappy modules. (The Forest Oracle, anyone?) To my mind, though, the best part of the Ravenloft Campaign Setting were the sourcebooks -- they invoked the mood of the setting and gave great ideas for you to put together your own stories in the domain, which is...

The Basic Rules say "The DM makes one roll for an entire group of identical creatures..." There are no exceptions or variants called out. (Not that prevents the DM from doing whatever he or she wants.) There are variant initiative rules in the DMG, but those appear to be solutions to resolving initiative faster such as using passive Dexterity checks or handling turn order by the "side" of the...

That someone in the real casting a cantrip would mean we have serious misunderstandings about the nature of our universe is totally not what I get from Aldarc's posts. It seems that he's still saying what he started with: everything is magical in D&D land; there is no mundane. He says thus to support the argumebt that every nechanic can be narratively supported in fiction as "it's magic." ...

A Partial action would be fairly easy to do in 5e, just remove(npi) the Move leaving the character with just his Action - he can use it to Dash (OK, stagger) if he really wants to move. It would sorta fit the way badly-wounded protagonists often act in the movies: staggering around in agony, but able to succeed at the one thing they've gotta do before collapsing...

Don’t have it in front of me, but if I recall the DMG (maybe it’s the PHB) provides several options, such as individual for all monsters. Also not the group initiative doesn’t require you to group all goblins together, for example. The DM decides how best to group them, and a “group” can be a single individual.
