Even now, smaller villages in the north are being swarmed by the lesser undead of his vanguard. His fortress, as always lies in the mountains far to the north. Let's say that a character wielding a weapon and a shield wants to attack with both. I usually allow this, using the "two weapon fighting" rules. My question is: does this character get his AC bonus from the shield after he attacked with the shield, against attacks made against me until his next action? According to me he shouldn't get the AC Bonus from the Shield, since he used it as a...

This is similar to how I view the competing beacons. Like various iterations of the automobile, powered flight, and other inventions came out at similar times and, in some cases, cause disagreement over who did something first. A 6 cu. ft. pillar like described in the adventures would weigh close to 600 pounds. I figure the Ragesians had developed the technology recently. When Seaquen put out...

If the heroes go out of their way to help someone, be heroic, complete an optional task, or achieve the best possible outcome for a quest, I will give inspiration. More inspiration creates a positive feedback loop like...

Unless I'm wrong, I've had a long week and a few drinks so that is a possibility. RAW is rules as written, an author can mean one thing and write another. But 5 years after it was written I don't trust anyone's memory, especially since they have done additions to the rules, by...

Why do we care what JC says now? Sure when he was helping to write the rules of 5e a few years ago his opinion carried some weight, but then he and others in the book he wrote told the DM's to read the books and make rulings and he gave the rulings power over the rules he created. So four to five years later in retrospect and a different frame of mind he has a different opinion, well that's...

By and large though, every single turn the melee characters and even a good chunk of ranged...

Maybe I'm a grognard, but I have never needed Critical Role to show me how to roleplay. It's designed for entertainment. It's like watching the Bachelor to find out how to date. Many of the players I know who champion it are the type who will steal from your character and betray them because it's "dramatic for the story." And the DMs play NPCs as if they were PCs taking all the spotlight and...

Yeah. What I'm saying about "missed opportunities" is that I feel like 5e came close, but for me it slightly missed the mark, and maybe a little tweaking here and there might make it a little better fit. Or in the cases where it doesn't really impact the game (inspiration for example), maybe just pull it out to streamline the experience (or replace it altogether). It seems like the designers...

But the vast majority did, and those gods were close and personal. If Eberron doesn't match that, it doesn't match the 3e cleric class as written. That's fine. I already understand that Eberron changed the cleric class for that setting. A class is more than just the mechanics.

The idea that Eberron changes the rules for the 3E cleric class is just bizarre. A 3E cleric didn't even have to serve a god!

No, overcoming the obstacle is not a possible result of failing to meet the DC. Overcoming the obstacle means you succeeded on the check. Progress with setback is one of the two possibilities for adjudicating a failed check. The thing is, simply taking the third option doesn't actually solve the problem. It's not the case that a DM who chooses to resolve the check as progress-with-setback has...

A quarterstaff does 1d8 when wielded with 2 hands, not 1d10. Also, you are using a bonus action to cast Hex, which means he doesn't get his bonus attack in the first round. Since most fights are pretty short that's a big impact on DPR.

If the GM decides that dear dad or whomever - the person or people the players' backstory framed as worthy folk - are in fact serial killers, than how was the character meant to carry it off? What did the player fail to do? What action declaration or player-side resource is mean to prevent unilateral GM decisions about the backstory element?

Short answer is yes... longer answer I was first inspired when reading Amber Diceless Roleplaying. The game had a concept you might call sliding detail. In 4e some fights might be simplified down to a skill challenge. But in a more concrete way just having bad guys decide to cut and run often works fine with my non-murder hobo players.

Not really. The existing errata just corrects the languages. Places where the rules aren’t clear. But the rules don’t change. What is being asked for is an actual change. Not just a clarification, but a revision. A change to rebalance certain elements. Some pet peeve. But that’s a slippery slope. Because once you decide to start changing, it’s hard to stop. There’s always another problem or...

I think it goes without saying that this was hardly my best work, both as a straight adventure and as an Iron DM entry. I'll admit to being as shocked as to the outcome as anyone, if not a little grateful. I've got a lot of a thoughts and things to say about this one, and specific responses to things, and not the time to do it now. It's hard for me to fully engage with this board on the...

I have been running this for 5 years now. We are just finishing book 5. I think it is a great setting and I'm really happy for a reasonable system for running kingdoms and sandbox play. The hardcover that expanded the system along with other 3rd party publishers made for a really robust system. I tweaked mass combat however.... 2d10 rather than d20 for mass combat attacks. It made all...

The two adventures in this match are vastly different in tone, style, and presentation. One is tightly constructed, fairly polished, and slyly humorous. The other is...not. But it has other strengths: namely, an underlying complexity that results in a rich scenario and detailed NPCs with developed motivations. It also appears to have used more ingredients well-integrated, but a deeper analysis...

Isn't that what the errata to long rests and the elf's Trance trait were - a patch? If it truly was just an error, why did it take them so long to fix it? Same with this upcoming ranger errata. How can that just be an "error correction" and not a patch, seeing as it's coming so far after the game's initial release?

I get that you have a position and a conclusion you would like to support but the facts dont support you. There are THREE fundamental checks in the game- attack rolls, saves and ability checks. Ability checks right there in their PHB direct tule on what the not meeting DC means establishes THREE outcomes... overcome, no progress, some progress and setback. That's one of three...

I feel I have been quite clear that I am speaking (a) primarily as an American, and (b) I do not believe that said silence is always or even often intentional. But intent is only part of the equation (I don't believe, as many of my political stripe do, that intent is completely irrelevant); impact matters too. Note that the message is always in the eye of the beholder. Again, I don't...
