Well there are plenty of examples in the thread already, and like I said it matters what rules the table has. But here’s one from the 5e DMG: “Rolling behind a screen lets you fudge the results if you want to. If two critical hits in a row would kill a character, you could change the second critical hit into a normal hit, or even a miss. Don't distort die rolls too often, though, and don't let...

Basic Int Check: Diggs arrives at the meeting point with his dog...er drone...Fluffy. To say they can hear him coming is an understatement. When he arrives, he's wearing a long coat, sporting a beard that would put the ugly elf to shame, and his left legs squeaks so bad even the troll should be cringing. He stops in front of them all, looks them over, grunting at the elves and human, and...

Yes...In a fantasy setting, we can come up with all manner of rp justifications for the DM having the monsters doing just about anything...we get it. But could != should. Having the monster act on knowledge he shouldn't have just because he can and then retroactively coming up with an RP reason for it is, imo, not going to be much fun for anyone. It just leaves players feeling like the DM...

Just because something can be abused in specific builds does not, in my opinion, disqualify a mechanic or make it without merit. If the only problem is with Sharp Shooter (which I have already homebrewed to reduce its impact), then I am not worried about any abuse potential. Especially since feats (while often assumed to be core) are optional aspects of the game. 1) That doesn't simplify...

And now it is time for the Adventures of Fluffy and Diggs! I have no idea if this character is even viable. Seems cool to me, or at least, what he could be given enough time and money. Diggs was drafted into the military of some corporation or another, he can't really remember which, when he was a kid. Or maybe it was after he became a man. Or maybe...well, whatever. The character himself is 5'9", and weighs 255lbs. He is a short, stocky fellow, who is a mix of fat and muscle. He has a lot of strength packed into his size, think of a bulldozer. He is an assassin that depends on his alternate identities to get close to targets and assassinate them. I combo grapple with attacking, if only an assassin could get an extra attack. It's about thinking in first or third person. Player establishment of fiction has nothing to do with it, and is for these purposes just a distracting side-discussion. Not sure how you see this as director stance. Put it in third person "Jocinda hooks up with the local contraband dealers..." and it is, but in first person I see it as still being actor stance - there has to be a way to...

Cool. I never thought to check the Monster Manual for just Fire Elemental, Water Elemental, Earth Elemental or Air Elemental. I thought a fire elemental would be a monster type, kind of like "Summon Minor Elemental" lets you chose an elemental under a certain CR rating. This is so much easier. No hidden meaning or "It could be interpreted this way." It's just "Pick one of four."

I really think it was a mistake to retain the short rest mechanic from 4E. The older editions functioned so much better without it.

My second sentence answers your question, "why?" My second sentence was my entire argument. To answer your other question: Your scenario with Sharpshooter looks a little problematic (and rather reinforces zardnaar's position that the feat is broken), and if it concerns Hawk Diesel, I think a decent solution would be to reword Swift Strike to give an extra melee attack, only . . . which...

New episode! CURSE OF STRAHD 16: PROMETHEUS The story of Prometheus, the champion who stole fire from the gods to give to humanity, is a story about us as a species. It's about our efforts to improve our existence and not accepting things as they are. It's also a tragic story about overreach and unintended consequences for that ambition. The immortal Prometheus is ultimately punished by the...

Me too. It's rubbish init? I mean I waste dozens of hours a week over what? A dice and cockney accent. What the heck? I spend money on books I don't need (and sometimes hardly read) I buy mini's that I will never use just because I think they look cool and then put them in a box and forget about them. I buy dice by the barrel load when I need 6. Not 60 or 600. 6.

It probably doesn't. A monster's CR is determined by 2 parts - it's damage output and its damage input. To figure out its damage output, you figure out its average damage/round by adding all the damage it does over 3 rounds, assuming it uses its best attacks, and that it hits every time (or its targets fail every save) and deals average damage on each strike. Now, I don't actually know...

Recognition check: A young woman was off to the side a little ways, leaning against the racing motorcycle she'd come in on. Clad in snug-fitting black and grey fatigues with a similarly colored slimline armored vest on top, she was fairly tall for a female 'humie' with a lithe, athletic build and latina features. Her head was half-shaved, the hair growing on the other half swept over and...

Why? It's the mechanism that the TWF style and the Shield Master and Polearm Master feats use. In fact, it's the standard mechanism for doing something extra. I've thought further and this could be abused with Sharpshooter. Are you comfortable with a first level character doing 3d4+12+30 HP damage in a round? (Assuming an 18 stat.) That's one attack with the weapon, the second attack thanks to...

Sure it doesn’t work for every day of an adventure but a good number of days in the adventure can be like this. Let’s call them “adventuring days” ;) Meaning if you’re going to have action encounters it’s best to bunch them up into a single adventuring day. Exploring a tomb/dungeon: easily an adventuring day. Taking a long journey? One day (or more) just sucks and has all kinds of trouble,...

I've gotten away from planning "X" number of short rests between Long Rests or how many Long Rests the characters take between points in the story. The story is the story, if they need to rest and can rest, then they rest. If they can't, but need to then they need to figure something out. Granted, I am a little forgiving with short rests, powers that recover on a short rest I prefer to treat...

It does seem a little odd for the second save to also be a Dex save. You're not really dodging or trying to avoid something coming at you. You're trying to shake off magic that has already hit you and affected you. I could see Con, Int, Wis, or Cha to save against this. Like, are you going to jump out of the stone that you're partially made of? I mean, everyone wants to only have to save...

I'm gonna argue against making the extra attack a bonus action. I like that after taking this style, I'd still have a meaningful choice between using a shield or a second dagger.

I am playing a lvl 14 Warlock in one of our campaigns. I have him loaded up with cool abilities that help him make charisma based skill checks, or really any skill check. I am trying to find ways he can get access to the enhance ability spell, not to get it in his spell list but to find items that he would be able to use reliably to cast this spell when he felt he needed a boost. Are there any...
