    I responded. They either need to tone down Making and Sentinel, or power up some of the other marks. Also, Mark of Hospitality having access to Magnificent Mansion at 8th level (potentially) is absurdly powerful and would make my Bard player pout as she finally got access to it at 13th level and it eats up her 7th level spell slot.

    To me, the best way for the DM to narrate the result of a failed Wisdom (Insight) check is that you can't tell if the NPC is lying or telling the truth, and that now the NPC is aware of your suspicion and acts accordingly.

In case of stealth for example, I wouldn't roll the moment the enemy hides.     Meta-game knowledge used to bother me a lot as both a DM trying to run a setting and a player trying to be true to my character. After 30 years, I tell my players not to sweat it.     My first reaction is to say the latter is much more preferable as it is kinda part of the point of what we're doing here - that RP thing.     4e got flack for every class feeling similar, it sounds like what you are talking about is every member of a class being the similar. Unless you are arguing that the 5e Wizard class is more similar to the 5e Fighter class than the 4e Wizard class is to the 4e fighter class, in that case you would be wrong by a whole host of metrics.

    Question - in combat, if a player rolls a 2 and misses and another player rolls a 19 and misses do you "allow" them to draw conclusions and make decisions based on those results? I the guy who rolled a 19+9=28 miss decides he needs advantage to fight (or to switch to spells that target with saves instead of to-hit) but the guy who rolled a 2+9 = 11 miss decides its ok for him to just swing...

    I wonder how you reconcile this with your rule to never hide rolls. One of the purposes for a passive check is for the DM to determine success or failure secretly. What I'm considering for navigation is contesting the navigator's passive Survival with a roll on behalf of the terrain. More difficult terrain types get advantage on the roll. "Clear" terrain types, such as a plain, have disadvantage....

    It was the example dungeon in the Metzner Basic set. The first level was completely mapped and filled, the lower level was just mapped and the DM was supposed to fill it, and the rumored 3rd level was left up entirely to the DM. Best teaching set ever.
