I like the idea of removing the 60 feet of dim light in total darkness from certain races but keeping the ability to upgrade dim light to normal light. It's easy to implement if you just say, "This race does not get penalties to perception checks in dim light." As for what is considered dim or total darkness - that's a DMs call. If I want to describe a 'moon lit night' mechanically, I can...

That’s quite a bit more helpful. Thank you. Maybe because that isn’t actually what I’m saying. I’m not claiming a level 1 spell slot is worse than a cantrip. In fact there’s many spells a level 1 slot could be used on that I would consider to be much better than a cantrip. I’ve admitted this many times in the thread. I agree. It’s a good thing that isn’t my claim.

One last thing I forgot. The druid tried conjure animals twice, hoping to conjure giant eagles in a Gandalf moment. The way it's meant to work is the player chooses the CR of the beasts and the DM chooses specific beasts suiting the local ecology. I made snap decisions deliberately avoiding flying beasts. It was a bit of a cheap move (though still within the rules) to keep the encounter...

In addition to five defined obstacles, I had the players roll for complications whenever they failed a check, dawdled too much (I kept this to a minimum, preferring to say after a bit "5 minutes pass" and check off time on the encounter clock), attempted to "brute force" a challenge, or presented me with a golden opportunity. The typical meaning behind fighter attacks "scaling" is referring to the gaining of an extra attack at 5th, 11th etc - same tier time cantrips gain extra dice. Since the fighter attacks include the ability score (also tends to tise) as freebie, its value improves by more hits and more dmg while cantrips typically only scale by raw dice - few exceptions exist of course.

My players and I have found this to be a weakness and are trying to find a houserule for it. So, if there is something I am missing from this point, PLEASE let me know! It is certainly possible, since we are just starting out in 5E.

I think, really, a better question, is why allow spells to scale up at all? Many spells scale up when using higher level slots, but a lot don't and offer no additional effect. What if I cast Grease using a 9th level slot? Personally, I have no idea WHY someone would do it, but the point is you could and currently get no benefit from it. What if spells, including cantrips, never scaled? Would...

There is a reason 5e doesn't refer to cantrips as "level 0 spells". It's because they are not. They are intended to be equivalent to a fighter's basic weapon attack. A fighter basic attack (and unlimited resource) will outstrip 1st level damage spells even faster than cantrips will, so if you nerf cantrips you would need to nerf fighters as well.

While high-level D&D is beyond such petty concerns as "things go bump in the dark", that doesn't mean a level 1 party should easily be able to ignore darkness.

I managed to make my "falling" issues interesting by giving players a turn to react to it (if outside combat). For example my Warlock was about to fall down which would have been deadly, but I told him he still has 6 seconds to react and asked if he wants to do something. He then had the idea to cast Eldritch Blast (with Repelling Blast) on himself to knock him back to solid ground.

The Wandering woods A magical forest moves randomly around the map, it is slowly making it's way towards an Inn or village the players live in. The campaign centers around the heroes exploring the woods in the hopes of learning it's secrets. A group of hags claim to be in control of the woods, but this is a lie. The forest was planted with seeds brought over from the feywild and grown with...

True. I found the theme music at the start to be a bigger break in cannon than anything they did later on Discovery, but I think I'm getting a little off topic. Besides, if we're going to try something based on the works of Scott Bakula, a Quantum Leap - plane hopping campaign is probably a better way to go. :p

My guess for that "something else" would be Harry Potter - the first film in that series hit in 2001, between TPM and AotC. Of course, JKR is now running into trouble with her own set of prequels. Maybe in twenty years Disney will buy that IP, too?

The "6 episodes next year" thing was when the BBC were holding out for some Who in 2019. Now they've delayed until 2020 that's no longer a factor. I would therefore expect 10 episodes, the same as this year.

The PCs are all from an obscure, peaceful world on the edge of known space, they've just made first contact with the elven Armada, have built their first ship with a real Helm, and are now setting out to see what's "out there". That could work, especially with players new to Spelljammer. I wouldn't try it with veterans, though - one of the big problems with "ST: Enterprise" was that they were...

I picked 2E up again and basically winged it from memory in 2012 (last played briefly 2002). Still remembered THAC0, weapon speeds and page numbers to look up things like saves, THAC0, and how weapon peed worked.

While it's largely forgotten today, in the 1960s and 1970s there was a series of extremely popular young adult books called the Chronicles of Prydain. It featured what I think is the ironic bard, Fflewddur Fflam. He was a fairly good fighter and could charm people with his magical harp.

Such an awesome idea. I was originally going to do AOW as a pirate campaign, linking in some of Paizo’s Skull and Shackles path but I love the idea of setting this in Athas. Now I think of it, I reckon it fits uncannily well!

Sure, life happens. Welcome again. The party is 2nd level now but the original chargen rules should still work. Integrating a new PC (two would be better) will be easy soon and it will not require knowing much of the existing back story.

There's a page of laws right at the back of the Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica. I don't have the book in front of me right now, but I'll check it when I get home and give you a page number.

I think there’s something to the act of rolling dice that serves as a sort of ceremonial observance. As though maybe an action is more “official” or legit if a die is also cast. After all, the most consequential actions, the most dramatic circumstances, all involve dice. It’s only natural to reach for the dice when something is important to us. Some games even push the drama such that...

I'm currently looking more into as well. So far I can say gyor is correct for the most part if not entirely. Murder is for the most part, legal. The boros enforce the laws, the azorius are the judge, jury and executioners. Not to say law mages won't respond to crime and act accordingly, they do in some areas however from what I can tell, only the higher class areas. The laws of ravnica are...

To be fair to folks who prefer to call for a roll in these situations, I don’t believe this comes from a place of distrust or disrespect. I used to be on that side of the fence, and it wasn’t that I didn’t believe my players would play their characters faithfully if I didn’t enforce dice rolls on every action. Rather, I think it’s a matter of carrying over ways of playing from previous editions...
