First let me say that I think soundtracks make a movie... Conan had a great soundtrack... Highlander without Queen´s music wouldnt even figure as a great movie... Patriot Games, Last of the Mohicans, etc... all of these have that extra "wow" due to the music that gives the movie atmosphere and gets an emotional reaction from the public.
So back to Lord of the Rings... during the movie some of the soundtrack fits in well enough... but isnt GREAT... sometimes I thought the music was actually too cheesy... trying to be dramatic yet sounding like a cheap attempt at grandiosity. Hearing the CD later made this even clearer... the music is nice but nothing much...
As a contrast, last week I saw an Indian movie at a film festival, "Lagaan"... and was astounded at how good the music based mainly on drums and singing was good and fitted the movie story. It gave an extra "flummph" to the story... and we are talking about a few million dollars movie as compared to a mega budget.
Did it spoil the LOTR movie ? No... did it make a difference... Yes I would say... a more dramatic and well placed music would have helped set emotional atmosphere... would give it a fantastic reaction. LOTR is an eye catcher... but left hearing a little aside in my honest opinion. Good but not great. Worth an Oscar ? Hardly.
Zealots may flame me now...

Not going to flame you. But I do have to say it took a good 2 or 3 spins before I liked it. I felt the same way after the first time I heard it. But now, I just love it. Keep listening, it will grow on you.
Except for maybe Star Wars, any movie soundtrack against "Conan the Barbarian" is like a running a race between Drew Carey and Carl Lewis.
Also, FWIW, I tend to like the HP soundtrack better than LOTR, even though one could pick out John Williams' obvious Star Warsish similarities.
By HP you mean Harry Potter ? I didnt notice it too much... will check it out better.
I have to agree comparing with Conan is kind of cowardice... but even then LOTR could have been better. The indian movie showed me that its possible and not a one in a life time breakthru like Conan...
FWIW ? I havent been acquainted with this one yet

Soundtrack wasn't good? I'm sorry, but I couldn't disagree more if I tried.
True, when listened to on CD, it's not as dramatic as some. But it's still very much worth listening to (it's become a standard part of the rotation for my gaming CDs). More to the point, though, that's not the best way to judge.
Obviously, the only fair criteria for good vs. bad soundtracks is, how did they work in the context of the movie? And with LOTR, I thought it was perfect. Not too overwhelming, not so much in the background that it had no impact. Expertly balanced.
Just my opinion, of course.

In the movie the calmer music was well placed and so on... yet on the action moments it fell a tad below my obviusly demanding standards.
Once Enya was good music for me... now its not as good as other stuff I have had the chance to hear... I might be more demanding in my musical tastes for fantasy.
Other movies did it much much better... which can as mentioned before not be a fair comparison...

It is a great soundtrack but without the movie images in front of you, it can lack something. The Flight from Moria (whatever it's called) music is brilliant but when I sat in the cinema watching that scene with the heroes fleeing the Balrog, the music just sent shivers down my spine.
Listen to it a few times, and it will grow on you.
I have to say i disagree totally, i loved the LOTR soundtrack, it fit the film it's mood and it's scenes perfectly...
It is one of the few soundtracks that has ever inspired me the moment the film is over to head for the nearest store and buy a copy..and thats just what i did.
the subtle drums providing the sense that sauron and the evil were always there just out of sight, just ion the background, the soft tones and lifting music.. beautiful i LOVED it.
Sorry you didn't like it. During the movie, it gave me chills in Mordor, made me feel welcome in the Shire, forboding in Moria and awe at the Watchers. It roused me during battle, made me contemplative in councial and rejoiced me in celebration.
In short, like mousferatu, I couldn't disagree more. Such is the realm of personal taste.

or our older WizarDru's Story Hour? You Should.
I ain't linking to Piratecat's story hour...no sir, I just won't do it. He can just get the next half-million reads on his own.
Did I mention that I have a Livejournal? It's possible that I have.
Haven't actually seen the movie, but there is a nice trance remix of the Enya song on the soundtrack, the 'Novacane' remix. Dunno if it was done officially or much about it, but if you can track down a copy, it's nice.

I too loved the soundtrack except for one piece. It seemed to crop up now and again and was sort of an uplifting piece. During the movie the part that stands out is where Frodo and Aragorn ride the crumbling stair down to the section that's still firm and attached. After they jump across, there's this uplifting swell of triumph to the music which grated on my nerves for some reason.
My favourite music from the movie was the part just before this, with the boom boom boom as they get to the stairway. My next favourite is the sad section after they get out of Moria and they react to what's happened to Gandalf.
While, I understand the disappointment with the majority of the soundtrack I really did find the almost dwarven sounding chants during "The Bridge at Kazad-dhun" chilling.
Does anyone know of another piece of music with this kind of chanting? I would love to hear just a whole disc of it, but it's tough to track down a chant CD that doesn't put you to sleep...
since I live next to a studio I was thinking of recording one just for the hell of it!
I loved that soundtrack. I can see no trace of any cheesiness...
The music fit the movie, and I wouldn't even have noticed it if I hadn't bought the soundtrack CD.

The Moria part with the Dwarven language chanting is also the part I liked the most. But in the soundtrack CD it lasts so little... which goes to show that in the cinema we certainly lose track of time.
You can read about how the Conan soundtrack was made and hear the soundtrack as well... which I didnt know two versions existed... one with 16 tracks and the other 12. There are some video parts too... lots of cut scenes from the film... Neat site.
