I heard a rumor that WOTC was going to start putting out the core books in Large Type editions just for us old-fogey types.
My first ever campaign (with me DM'ing, not first ever ever) is currently underway.
Congrats and welcome Jodjod! May you have many more successful and rewarding campaigns. Let us know how things are going.
It is great to see members of every range of experience here.
Oh, and I am not QUITE as old as you Derbacher... I am the single 1980-1984. I started in 1982, having never been a mere player. I went straight to the proper side of the screen. Note: I have played some since then, but have never enjoyed it as much as DM'ing. Also, I have had some truly horrible DM's. When I have told some of my stories of them, some people have wondered why I didn't press charges. Also note that the, "I could do better than this." response is my best motivator. I chose my profession after suffering through three horrible band directors. I was a senior in college before my first great director. Heh. My father chose his profession (he was a police officer for 25 years in northeastern New Jersey) on a bet. Someone bet him he couldn't do their job (after my dad ridiculed him for his incompetence), so in 1955, he became a town cop in NJ, just across from NYC. I guess its true what they say about apples and trees.

I got my first Basic D&D set for my 14th birthday (summer '78). My best friend and I desperately tried to understand the game but it was completely foreign to anything we'd played before (stratego, risk) that we couldn't get it. My mother called in a friend of hers whose son was a Dungeon Master and he spent several afternoons that summer running unconnected game sessions and teaching us to play.
I ran my first game with my best friend and my brother in November of that year, and started my first campaign with my friends over Christmas break. In the 26 years since I have been almost exclusively a GM, mainly becuase I can hardly ever convince any of my friends to run. I have had some very memorable moments as a player, however.
In this time, I've run six different campaign worlds (one Grayhawk, five homebrew worlds of vastly different depth and quality), but have only managed one TPK!
Actually, I'd like to think the players managed that one all on their own ...
OK, so I'm the really old guy! started with the little white book (and I still have it!) in December 1976. I've been on the DM side from the beginning, since no one else had ever even heard of the game before. I think I've only played in three other peoples games over the years, and none of them lasted more than a couple months. I like this view, my players like me here, so here I stay.

Spoiler:
I had completely forgotten that you were a band director, too. (I remember you mentioning that in a thread with LMK a while back.)
Time for my old-people nap

Being I started playing about 1999-2000, I fall into the last category. I started DMing about 2 years ago off and on, now, with the main DM in the Marines, I have taken the mantle of the main DM of our group, and they think that I'm doing a great job.
Sometime in the spring of 1986, I believe. My first adventure was based on Ronnie James Dio's song "Sacred Heart". Great concept, miserable execution... LOL

Quote of the night last game session: "Want to come to my prepaid hotel room? Bouncy bouncy!" October 25th, 2008
I actually started DMing about 2 years ago, so I'm relatively new. I've only run a singe "successful" game, "successful" being didn't fail before it was started. But even that ended after a while when we were about 5th-level. Other than that, I've tried to start another D&D game and a Star Wars RPG game, but I've been pretty much stuck to PbP games.
Why thanks, once its been going for awhile I'll probably attempt a story hour with it. Maybe.
What are the chances of us getting a "Campaign Log" subforum or the like around here? I think it could be neat to have a place to read just about GMF campaigns.

That's an interesting idea. Should we make one thread for all GMs to post in?
