As an e-publisher who is starting to get close to releasing a couple of PDFs, what is the best method of handling payment to the author? Paypal, or some other method? I am in Australia, so options may be a bit limited.
We use paypal, c2it.com (for wire transfers overseas), and money orders. Every so often I send a regular check, but I prefer not to worry about cashing it, or have the freelancer or staff worry about whether the check will bounce.

Paying a freelancer is one of the few things I actually do with a paper check. Startups could save the cost of the checks (which could be as much as $80) by using paypal, but its definitely let the buyer beware, particularly if you are overseas.
We pay all our writers, editors, artists, etc. with checks from our business bank account. We pay within 30-60 days (depending on the case) after we receive the work or (rarely) within 30-60 days of e-publication. Which explains why we're so poor all the time That reminds me...
Jason,
Who do you use other than PayPal? (I'm rather sick of them myself) If you tell me, I promise to quit looting your account
Cheers!
Ian

I don't use any electronic money transfer systems right now except when paying Jason Chambers (who did the cover for Three Arrows), who I pay via direct bank transfer (we have accounts at the same bank).
ALL our other payments are made out by check.

Hrms. I wasn't too clear on the question, I guess. What I meant was: what do you use for collecting sales revenues from RPG Now. I know they like to dump the funds into PayPal, but do you have an alternate means?
Thx,
Ian

They will cut a check on the 15th of every month for sales from last month as long as you reach a $25 minimum. (I think that's the minimum.) I also do not accept payment from PayPal.

I'll meander over to RPG Now and change those settings, then. PayPal takes a bite out of my earnings every month, anyway, so I'll be happy to axe them.
Thanks again!

Watch those checks/cheques going overseas. Many countries if they do accept it will charge the recieved a coversions fee if it is not in their currency.
My first attempt at an international check, I sent to the UK in US Dollars, and they bank they had, wanted almost 30% of the value to convert the monetary figure, and cash the check. I learned after that.

That's very odd. Common practice is to charge a commission, but it's more like 3% than 30%....
I too have no love for paypal but am forced to use them. It's scary as we have a LOT of cash flow going through them and are at risk for hundreds of dollars every day even with constantly withdrawing.
Just recently I typed in a wrong email address to pay someone for RPGNow earnings... it took 3 weeks and $60 to get the money back. At least I got it back as I've heard many others who have not.
I don't recommend anyone use paypal if they are just US to US money transfers. Paypal does help for overseas commission payments. But always keep your balance low or empty. Setup your account to take payment from your credit card NOT your bank account. At least then if the crap hits the fan you can do a chargeback (you'll loose your paypal account, but who cares at that point).
I simple search on google.com will show you hundreds of horror stories about paypal and how they just take over accounts and keep your money - worse, they allow others to continue to send money to the account without you having access to it.
I hoped that when Ebay bought them out they'd change some practaces, but so far not...
Anyway, in direct answer to the inital question, we send out paypal and business checks as payment methods. Paypal is definatly nice/quick/fast/cheap if you don't mind the risk of the leaving money there.
I hear that! Haven't read any horror stories about PayPal (yet), but I've gotten a real negative vibe from others who use the "service". BTW, it is always a good idea to not let folks withdraw directly from your checking account. It's sold as "convenience", but ends up being a pain in the nether-region. Besides, my math is bad enough -- I *don't* need anyone making withdrawals to help screw things up any worse!
I immediately withdraw any funds I get from PayPal anyway. I like a $0 balance. After all, it may be my money, but it doesn't do me any good if I can't get to it
Cheers!
