I've been seeing these mage knight things EVERWHERE, though I don't know anyone who plays it oddly enough...
Anyways, I was wondering... would they make good miniatures? According to the boxes they come pre painted and assembled, and the few I've seen (mainly the big ones that come by themselves in clear plastic on a cardboard back) seem to be fairly detailed. Of course, since they come randomly assorted, it's hard to get what you're looking for, but on the other hand you could turn around and make that a plus by using what you get as an idea for the encounter.
I agree with what you are saying about not know what you will get when you open up the boxes. Best bet if you are actively trying to use Mage Knight for roleplaying figures, is to go to Gen Con or something like it. You got vendors always selling figures sperately.
And although I wouldn't substitute the minis (I already have a collection of 400-500 Ral Partha and Reaper pieces), I've heard good things about their setpiece stuff: doors, tunnels, etc. Not as good as Dwarven Forge, but less expensive.
And sometime this month or next, they're releasing a Castle: towers, walls, gatehouse, etc. which I will definitely be getting my hands on. I'm a sucker for detailed tabletop set-ups.
I thought about using them when they first came out - the pre-painted aspect is a big perk for me since I never get around to painting the unpainted miniatures I have - but I concluded that the bases were too large for use as D&D miniatures. Of course, you could always rip them off the bases and remount them, but then you're doing work with the miniature and so decreasing their main benefit (pre-painted and pre-assembled).
Their paint jobs, by the way, aren't really that great from what I've seen, but I would consider them "good enough".
They are not bad - I bought a starter kit last week - but they do make me feel good about my own painting abilities. You know they could be painted better when their own website has tips for repainting your mage-knight figures.
As far as the game itself goes - I think I would take Warhammer anyday, but for playing with my kids as an introduction to mini warfare it might not be bad.
Some of the MK monters are very good sculps and fair paint jobs, too. But the humans are often poorly detailed. If you are buying for the monsters you must buy singles or you WILL spend almost as much as you would of spent on a Games workshop fig.
Thie site has GOOD priced on the yellow [weak] single fig and ther are often running a sale or two. Trust me a 80¢ for a tough minotuar and 50¢ for a werecat is a great price.

You will notice some of the MK monsters, especially from dungeons, are actually remakes of some older ral partha minis notably lizard man [titans of terror line; the original mini came with a hunting lizard as well]
Yeah, they work great, I think. Some of the ones in the newest set are actually old Ral Partha molds.
The original set (Rebellion) are a bit on the ugly side, especially the paint jobs. But a lot of the ones in the Dungeons set are really nicely painted. And there are a lot of monsters in it as well.
I probably wouldn't buy them in boosters/starter sets, since it's random - buy them on ebay - most are really cheap.
The game has been slain by the suits who now own the rights. Picking up the figs should be pretty easy from ex players at your FLGS.
Hey Frank, I noticed that you put a link to PJCC above. Have you used them much? How is their shipping? I tried to order some stuff but they wanted almost $10 for a $20 dollar purchase. So I didn't finish the order. Is this normal and they adjust by weight of the package or what?
I used to get large orders from them, unfortunatly shipping usually bites and it seems to have gotton worse of late. I switched to ebay for a lot of figs. But even there shipping is a birtch. Larger orders will save a lot on shipping & smaller orders cost more to ship than the figs you get.
mkrealms.com has a good mageknight forum. there is a trading section that may be helpfull. The site management is very opposed to commercial links though ..[pjcc actually triggers the censorship filter [***c]
