Here I will comment on RPG related material I have recently read or played. If I keep current with this it may serve as a long term tool to help me decide what books to keep. I guess you could consider this a series of short (or lazy) reviews.

A note for any readers who stumble upon this. I haven't yet decided to make the 4E plunge, so initial comments will most likely be 3E centric.

Dungeon Crawl Classics # 50 - SPOILERS

Dungeon Crawl Classics # 50 - Vault of the Iron Overlord

SPOILER ALERT - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - TWICE!

I have bought a few of the DCC series, and have been marginally impressed. But this one (written by Monte Cook) has got me juiced to start a new short term game just to run it!

In a nut shell, this is an old fashioned dungeon crawl with a twist; sections of the entire dungeon rotate and only by finding the proper activators and employing them in proper sequence can you advance deeper into the center of the circular vault. Yummy!

Filled with false doors, traps, puzzles, and of course - monsters, this should fill 3 or 4 sessions of gaming fun. Thanks for the recommendation, Crothian!

BFG Says: Scrounge $14.99 together and buy this for your 7th-9th level 3.5 game if you are (or want to be) the rat bastard type of DM.

30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons

I bought this book about a year ago as part of a larger purchase from a deep discount e-tailer and hadn't done more than flip through it before this week. I think I paid about $5 for it... I'll admit I never would have bought it for anywhere near the $49.95 list price.

This book examines the history of D&D; focusing on its major releases and editions along with insider company drama as told by involved principals. I was surprised by all the politics and even more surprised by the lack of attention to the games original creation. I'm sure the book would have been much different if written now, in light of Gary's passing, as opposed to 2004...

My favorite part of the book (aside from all the cool art pulled from the entire history of D&D) was the short testimonials from dozens of semi-famous people relating their personal stories of how they originally discovered the game. Most of these were by people I don't know - many of them producers, developers, and writers for video games, TV and movies. Still interesting though.

My least favorite part of the book was the text printed at angles and multiple narratives on each 2 page spread... made for difficult reading.

I bet we will see a 35 year anniversary book next year of some sort.

BFG Says: Buy it for $5 like I did! A nice coffee table book for the 'outed'.
