The Eternal City of Tanelorn

Welcome all to my blog. As mentioned in my first entry I've not contributed much to blogspace in the past. I've been an avid blog reader for some time but never really thought I had much to say. Now that my favorite site has a blogging feature I thought it appropriate to start one of my own. For more on my inspiration, see the first entry (in Misc - The Importance of Blogging).

What you'll find in here is a collection of 4e creations, product reviews (pimping anyways), and random musings. At least that's what I've got on the books so far. Stay tuned for more.

The Importance of Blogging

I read probably 30-40 blogs regularly but I've never bothered to post one of my own. Just never thought I had anything to really post at all. But having immersed myself in blog culture and now having such a great opportunity to get into the ground floor of a new blog experience on my favorite site on the net, I'm in

To start off, I thought I'd link to a blog I read recently. Here is a thought provoking article on the importance of embracing social media - to contribute to the new Industrial Revolution and to start sharing your thoughts and time instead of just passively consuming.

Embrace your cognitive surplus and blog

    I tried blogging at one point and didn't stick with it. I think that's because I was (and am still) having trouble differentiating between a blog and a diary/journal. I write daily in my journal but those are thoughts for me -- something to help remind me, in future years, of what was going on in my life; something to help me spot trends in my behavior; personal stuff; boring stuff. No one would want to read that.

    I had trouble conceiving of what my audience would be like -- who I was writing for.

    And I do not care to try to sway people to my opinions -- I figure I would either be preaching to the already-converted, or to those who have no interest or intention of changing.

    What would I do with a gaming blog? I guess I could kick around ideas, share successes and problems -- but that's really where a message board does more for me (because of the feedback). I guess I could see a time when I want to share something but don't necessarily care if I get feedback...

    @Erekose:
    Gee. Now I feel a little bit guilty about watching TV. Though the internet seems to be eating up a lot of my former TV-watching time, and I suppose that's a good thing.

    What really interests me is how well RPGs fit into the model of Cognative Surpluss. Role-Playing is an act of creation, moreso than Watching Gilligans Island (or even, I'd argue, than playing WoW). But unlike Wikipedia, it doens't often result in something of lasting value--It's just a temporary enjoyment. Does that mean it's going to fade into the background along with Gin and TV? I sure hope not.

    Also, on a different subject, please consider adding your blog to the blogshelf.

    @Eric:
    It's not as though your cognitive surplus has gone to waste, or that you aren't capable of creating someting that holds the interest of other people--The first two letters in ENWorld demonstrates that pretty well.

    Me I'm embracing the blog because it seems to have greater stability. ENWorld is so popular that a lot of posts are neglected and disappear of the front page far too quickly. Hopefully the blog will let those ideas, successes, and problems stay around for comment a little bit longer than the messageboard allows.

    arscott: you do have a good point about posts/threads disappearing. A blog would be a good place to gather and store the best of one's creations and/or musings. I had a thread where the EN World gang helped me refine a monster idea -- I could post the final result in a blog, I suppose.

    As someone who has been a webmaster in various capacities for something like 13 years, I think a lot of what I have done as websites in the past could now be done with blogs. I see a campaign log being one of those possibilities.

    I think the bar can be a lot lower in a blog than in starting a new thread on ENWorld.

    A few of us had an interesting (to me ...) discussion about speciality priests in AD&D 2nd edition after MerricB posted it to his blog.

    I couldn't imagine starting a thread about it; its not a topic many people care about, and those who did wouldn't have found it because it would quickly have fallen off the first page.

    And if you blog about something no one else is interested in, then its no big deal. Blogs are supposed to be personal. However, I cringe with embarassment every time I start a messageboard discussion because no thread I've started (on any site) has ever had more than half a dozen replies.

    The article you linked is fascinating. I'd like to think it's true what he's saying. We are moving forward into something new...

    GOD DAMN.

    And now I can't resist kicking the GSL one more time.

    Why am I not enthusiastic about 4e? Because they took away my mouse.
