Rat Warren Rescue: Setup
Summary
Rat Warren Rescue is a solo adventure for a Novice-level paladin PC. The PC is a paladin in training, and is given the simple task of delivering a message to a nearby village. While he is on the way to the village, he encounters a young boy chased by a giant rat. If the PC defeats the rat, the boy pleads with him to rescue his brother, who is trapped in a cave by some other giant rats.
Introducing the Adventure
The adventure starts simply enough, with the PC's mentor asking him to deliver a message to his old comrade-in-arms, the Constable of a village about 10 miles away. Since the path to the village passes by some woods, and wild animals from the woods sometimes attack travellers on the path, the PC's mentor advises him to go armed and ready for danger.
The PC starts out with the standard equipment for a novice of his order: chainmail, a light shield, and a mace (50 gp value), but the PC's mentor allows him the option to improve his gear in one of the following ways:
1. Trading his mace for a longsword (+1 to attack rolls);
2. Trading his chainmail for plate mail (+2 to AC); or
3. Adding 2 javelins (gain a ranged attack).
Experienced players may notice that the improvements are worth 10 gp each, and may ask if they can tailor their gear within the 60 gp limit (e.g. scale mail, a light shield, a mace and a javelin), or if they can request for additional equipment. If the DM wishes, he may allow the PC to gain an additional 5 gp worth of gear if he succeeds at a DC 20 Diplomacy check, and to obtain whatever equipment he wants within his budget.

Sounds good to me. But I'd change the first giant rat to either one dire rate, or several giant rats. A fight against one minion is, um, pretty lame.
I can see there being a Wererat somewhere in this. Please tell me there's a wererat!
Also, I like how you've set up the gear. That's a cool touch. Is there gonna be a DMNPC, so that the player has a sidekick? That boy that's rescued would be a great NPC for just that purpose!Posted 28th June 2008 at 10:02 AM by Wik

Actually, the first giant rat is going to be an alpha giant rat, a monster I modified from the giant rat minion using my adjunct template. It'll have more than 1 hit point, and will take about two or three normal hits to bring down, but a single critical hit will still kill it.
There will be an encounter with three giant rat minions later on, but this first adventure probably won't feature a wererat. The PC isn't even 1st level, you know!
I wasn't planning on having the boys be more than an excuse for the PC to use his Divine Challenge, athough there's nothing to stop a PC with an extra weapon or two from passing one to them. Preferably a ranged weapon, though, as they are not going to do well in melee.Posted 28th June 2008 at 06:06 PM by FireLance
