I think Points of Light is a move in the right direction and more of an observance of how DMs have been doing things for decades.

Well, it's one of the easiest ways of building a framework for D&D, justifying the major tropes, and having plenty of opportunities for adventures without having to come up with too much background story for the world.
Though, of course, this is not the only possible approach...
