If you saw the two most recent "Star Wars Story" movies--Solo or Rogue One--a common refrain is that they feel like how Star Wars role-playing game sessions play out. The reason has a lot to do with a shift in franchise-building philosophy and what kinds of stories role-playing games are good at telling.

Over on EN5ider, the 5th Edition patreon, the thirteen new minor magical items in this article from writer Robert Lashley include the inspiring pahu, smelly stone, midnight pearls, messenger ant, and more, making it easy to add a bit of flavourful magic to your 5E games without unbalancing the campaign. Illustrated by Xanditz.

A bit of a quiet week on the RPG new releases front in stores, but it's certainly made up for digitally with a host of interesting releases! On the board game side of things we also see a new Warhammer 40,000 race game released, by Devir, called Gretchinz!

Monday's Pathfinder 2 preview over at the Paizo blog talked about skills, so it only makes sense that the Friday preview would take a look at skill feats in the upcoming game.

In the late 70s and early 80s there were a large number of magazines running around that talked about gaming in general and role playing games in particular. Of course most people are familiar with Dragon Magazine or the early White Dwarf, but I wonder how many remember the gem from Task Force Games that did as much to broaden my RPG horizons as either of those. That gem was Nexus Magazine and it began in 1982 talking about of all things, what is a role playing game.

When the GM puts in the effort to create a game session for your party, and everyone makes time in their busy lives to show up, you might as well make the most of the occasion. Setting the scene for your game and creating a space where you can relax can help immerse you in the experience. Whether you prefer to create an atmosphere that suggests the setting of your game, or choose to focus on the fact that you are hanging out with your friends for a few hours, you can find little ways to make it special.

The H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society have announced they are producing The Masks of Nyarlathotep radio drama. The series, which will span a 6 CD box set, will be presented as a 1930ís-style radio drama and feature a large cast of professional actors, sound effects and thrilling original music by Troy Sterling Niles. They will also be releasing a massive Gamer Prop Set for the iconic Call of Cthulhu campaign, containing over 130 props and handouts.

In a topical subject, given the recent release of Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, Jon Peterson has posted the original 13th-level version of Mordenkainen by Gary Gygax in 1974, along with some other historical iterations of the character, which was Gygax's PC for many years.

Hello everyone, Darryl here with this week's gaming news! New Dungeons & Dragons books announced, a hands-on preview of Pathfinder 2nd Edition, a big preview of Judge Dredd and the Worlds of 2000AD, new products from Fantasy Flight and Green Ronin, and more!

A large subset of board games is Eurostyle games. These games are almost exactly the opposite of RPGs in many ways. Keep in mind, board (including some card) games are a vastly larger segment of tabletop gaming than RPGs in monetary terms, and Eurostyle games are a large part of that segment. So even if you have no interest in non-RPGs, a comparison may help you understand what you do (and could do) with your own campaign or RPG design.

Modern Gods? Treasonous Mutants? 1960's Agents keeping a hidden multiverse at bay? Vikings? Return to old haunts? Guard duty? Building (and populating) a range of settlements from tiny Keeps to the Nations Capital! Or simply fancy some nice new dice and a pouch to carry them in? Well, you're in luck adventurer! This weeks crowdfunding round-up has all of the above waiting to be discovered!

Today's entry in Mythological Figures is another historical figure thatís taken hold of some zeitgeist and earned a place in today's popular culture. Julie D'Aubigny ("La Maupin") started appearing on social media last year and for good reason--she was a straight up badass.

I think that, outside of comic books, the one media that I've glommed onto for the longest part of my life has been horror. But, the longer that I role-play the less interested I become in horror role-playing. Most of the 90s were taken up with Call of Cthulhu and horror-themed GURPS games that I ran. Both of these systems were great for horror for me, but something changed over time.

We have a BIG preview for you today! The first 8 pages of the Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD core rulebook, which comprises the Introduction chapter of the game! You can download it as a PDF by clicking on the image below to jump straight to the official website!

It's another Tuesday, which means another look at the previous night's Pathfinder 2nd Edition preview! There's only a couple of month to go until the full playtest rules are released (I have the hardcover on pre-order). Until then, Paizo continue with their twice-weekly glimpses into the ruleset - and this time we look at skills!

The third season of Warped, the official What's OLD is NEW (WOIN) livestream, launched this past weekend. The first season was a Traveller/Firefly type setting; the second was a Battlestar Galactica/Colonists type thing; and this new third season is a silly, comedic, Orville-esque setting aboard an exploration starship! Warning: mature language from the start!

Dungeon World is the first foray into Powered by the Apocalypse games for many gamers, since it is just a hop, skip, and a jump from something like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder into Dungeon World. It borrows quite a bit from those games, in terms of surface-level mechanics, to capture the tone of those worlds while keeping the core of the PbtA system intact.

Welcome back to this weeks rundown of the games hitting stores this week, as well as a look back at last weeks RPG PDF releases! According to ComicBook.com, WotC's Brand Director, Nathan Stewart, told them that WotC plans to open up a couple more D&D settings for play later this year. He said "It's going to be more like at the level of how Barovia [introduced in the Curse of Strahd adventure storyline] is in terms of stuff. Here's a thing that's going to give you a taste of the setting, but we're not going to that setting yet, we're just letting you get in there and start doing it."

Dungeons & Dragons is more popular than ever before. As a result, D&D culture is starting to seep into other activities for grown-up gamers, including their professional lives. Is D&D now being used to network and blow off steam the way adults play poker?
