Sean's Picks of the Week (1214-1218) - Savage Lairs and Egyptian Gods, the 10th Doctor, Rifts, WoD,

And here we are, at long last, looking across the last weekend ere Christmas is upon us! I do hope all of you who celebrate have a grand time with family and friends. For those who do not celebrate, may you still know joy, peace, and comfort in this last week of 2015. I will be honest right up front - please forgive the lack of any Picks next week. I am taking the full week off, especially since I will be on the road for at least a good part of it. In the meantime, however, here's a pile of good ones to get you through...

Savage Lairs: Fantasy Forest

Trust me when I tell you, if you are at all a Savage Worlds fan, and especially if you’re a Savage GM, you not only want this book, you need it! Cool, insert-as-needed scenarios, sure, sure… all very nice. But the biggest aid this will be is stats for stuff – ready to hand! – for a lot of things you’ll otherwise scramble through any number of other sources in desperate search for.

Don’t even hesitate. Buy, download, use! My nickname for this is “Savage GM’s Little Helper (Part 1).”

Players are an unpredictable lot. You spend hours planning the perfect adventures, then they ignore your carefully staged clues to head off in a direction you had not prepared. Savage Lairs is here to help.

This book presents a range of sixty encounters all tailored to fit within a typical fantasy forest. Each page presents a new scene that offers a way to occupy the players while you try to figure out how to adapt your masterwork to their unexpected actions. Some could lead to a side quest or an unrelated adventure, but this is not necessary. These encounters help you to occupy the heroes for a bit, while you hurriedly readjust your main focus.

Savage Lairs Fantasy Forests is for use with any fantasy setting. It makes use of the Savage Worlds game system and requires the Savage Worlds Core Rules for use.

Chronicles of Darkness

In case you missed it, here’s a huge announcement about the future and rebranding of the World of Darkness. I am very happy for all of my friends (including Rich Thomas, Eddy Webb, Monica Valentinelli, and so many others) on this new, refreshing Path (see what I did there?).

The first step on said Path, of course, is this book.

Keep walking.

Eyes straight ahead.

Don’t look back.

In the shadows and between the cracks of our everyday lives hide the Chronicles of Darkness. Here lurk creatures of ancient myth and urban legend. Here lie the graves of angels and the bunkers of secret government programs. Here every malformed horror you’ve ever seen out of the corner of your eye has a home. And they’ve seen you.

Don’t look back!

Chronicles of Darkness RPG rulebook contains:

  • A guide to creating characters to explore a world of modern horror, from hopes and fears to psychic powers.
  • Dramatic rules for investigation, social manipulation, and bone-crunching violence.
  • Over a dozen monsters straight out of weird fiction and urban legend… plus complete rules for creating your own.
  • The God-Machine Chronicle, a massive collection of sample characters and techgnostic adventures.
  • Formerly titled nWoD Core Rulebook 2nd Edition.

Note: This is the Advance PDF and we will be collecting errata and correcting the PDF and preparing the Print On Demand versions afterwards. Purchasers of the Advance PDF will automatically get the final version of the PDF added to their Library.

Set Rising

There are times I like to do a callback to an older product, falling into the “In Case You Missed It” Category. At the same time, I’ve got many publishing friends who ask for a bit of extra love on something they felt might have been missed. This is one of those Picks, and I stand by it because the entire premise is cool as all get out and it slides ever-so-nicely into a little something I am working on, as well.

The scheming god Set has built a dark mirror of the Egyptian empire. His minions raid the mortal realms, enslaving humans to construct impossible pyramids for an evil purpose. Worse, they’re invading alternate realities too. Someone has to hunt them down, and the techno-Egyptian god Ra is looking for a group of demigods who are up for the task.

Across the universe, the future is about to be Set.

Set Rising is part of the Suzerain Continuum.

Chaos Earth Resurrection

The march to get all of that amazing content for the Rifts setting online continues, and the Chaos Earth line is particularly exciting, since it goes back to when everything first went straight to hell.

Chaos Earth Resurrection

A Rifts Chaos Earth Sourcebook

The Golden Age of Science and human civilization is shattered with the return of magic and the Coming of the Rifts. Overnight, human civilization is toppled. Many major cities are wiped from the face of the Earth. Humanity struggles to survive against impossible odds and the demonic horrors, aliens and monsters emerging from the Rifts.

Now comes the first invasion from another world. Its army? The animated corpses of our own dead. Mechanized zombies that are nightmare creations with multiple body parts and armor and weapons bolted right onto their bodies. Unless stopped, they could wipe out all human life.

  • Do you hear the Transmission?
  • Chaos Zombies rise to slaughter the living.
  • 12 different mechanized Scrap Zombies join their ranks.
  • Frankenstein amalgamations, Scrap Zombies are armored and weaponized in ways never before imagined. They stalk the ruins of civilization and battle power armored troops in a death match humanity must win.
  • Zombie Mistakes and Quirks Tables.
  • The Black Obelisk, zombie factory, a madman and dark magic.
  • More monsters and plagues from beyond the Rifts.
  • Bringing mechanized zombies to other game settings. Suitable for use in Rifts®, Heroes Unlimited™ and other RPG worlds.
  • 160 page sourcebook.

The Tenth Doctor Sourcebook

I will readily admit he’s “My Doctor.” David Tennant’s run as science-fiction’s enduring heroic adventurer resonates with millions of fans, so getting his sourcebook up for the RPG is a real Christmas gift! He didn’t want to go… and now he’s back!

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, this Sourcebook explores the Tenth Doctor’s adventures on Earth and beyond. With detailed information on all the allies, enemies, aliens and gadgets that he encounters, as well as examining each of his adventures, the book contains a wealth of material for the Doctor Who Roleplaying Game, and is also a fact-packed resource for fans of the show!

After sacrificing himself to save Rose, the Doctor regenerates once more and immediately has to defend the Earth from alien invaders in his dressing gown.

Travel back to Pompeii, forward to the end of the universe and set off on a memorable voyage on the spaceship Titanic. Discover you are not alone, find out who Harold Saxon is and thwart the return of the Time Lords (again).

Allons-y!

A fairly eclectic mix, but then again, most Weeks are like that. One more thing I'd like to point your attention to, which was also covered in the Picks -

One of the best things you can get for your favorite gaming friends is straight-up store credit at DriveThruRPG. You simply pay it straight in, then re-allocate the credit to whoever you like (you just need their email address that they use for the site).

Here’s a FAQ page for more information on how these Gift Certificates work.

So forget last-minute driving around or poking into Amazon wish lists – get them what they really want!

As for the weekend, we're doing Combat Santa tonight among a large portion of our gaming group - it's like Dirty Santa, but with actual game rules, dice, and everything. If anyone is curious about the game rules, post a request in the Comments and I'll drop them in there!

Tomorrow - at long last! - we're finally seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was impossible to get advance tickets for our group any earlier, and these old bones don't stand in line like that so easy anymore.

Next week, of course, is the Christmas holidays week, which will include a jaunt for me and my Belovedest, Carinn, out to the Blackhawk region to check out the casinos and such, followed by more gatherings, meals, and celebrations with friends and family next weekend.

Happiest and Merriest to All!

The Adventure Continues!
