[UPDATED!] Princess Bride Kickstarter Launches Today!

Not much has been heard about The Princess Bride RPG since it was first announced back in January 2017, but publisher Toy Vault has announced that it will be coming to Kickstarter today. The game will be powered by the venerable 3-dice Fudge system, upon which the Fate system was later based.

UPDATE! The Kickstarter has now launched! Unfortunately, the Kickstarter is only for folks in the US or Canada (even the PDFs). Check out the free Quickstart rules here.

Re. the US/Canada only thing: Toy Vault has confirmed that "Unfortunately, our license only extends to US and Canada", but later said that "If the campaign does well enough we will look into extending the license."

Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True Love. Miracles. The adventures of The Princess Bride universe are coming soon to a tabletop near you with The Princess Bride Role-playing Game! Toy Vault, Inc. is excited to announce that we will launch The Princess Bride Role-playing Game on Kickstarter on Tuesday, February 13th, 2018!

The Princess Bride Role-Playing Game is a cooperative story-telling game. Each player takes on the role of a character within The Princess Bride universe. This character can be anything that the player imagines inhabits The Princess Bride universe. One of the players will create the world and adventure for the rest of the players. The book is a guideline for players to play fairly within the world, as well as give helpful hints and advice on how to have a fun time around the table.

Written by Steffan O' Sullivan, The Princess Bride Role-Playing Game is a 250-plus page full color rule book and has all the rules you need to play in the world of The Princess Bride. The Princess Bride Role-Playing Game uses a light role-playing engine called Fudge. Fudge was also designed by Steffan O’ Sullivan, and features a simple set of rules that requires just three six sided dice to play. Players can even use Fudge dice to make action resolution a bit more streamlined. The book presents a graduated character creation system, allowing first time players to jump right in, and experienced players can experiment with their own character builds. In addition to the easy rules and character creation, it details the background of The Princess Bride. It has the stats for all the main characters in the movie, such as the Dread Pirate Roberts, Inigo Montoya, Fezzik and more. Players will also find descriptions of many of the places found in The Princess Bride. The book also includes adventures and adventure hooks to keep play groups busy for weeks.

The Princess Bride Role-playing Game will launch on Kickstarter on Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 and with successful funding, is slated for widespread release in August 2018.

A correction: Fudge dice are dF's (d3's in the form of six-sided dice with two sides marked with a plus, two sides marked with a minus, and two sides left blank). Rolling 4df (the standard) provides a result from -4 to +4 with 0 being the most likely. It's a nice bell curve where characters will usually be acting at their skill level, but allows for spectacular successes and failures.

Anyhow, I think the Fudge system is perfect for The Princess Bride setting, and I'm not just saying that because I publish Fudge (Grey Ghost Games) and was editor on this project. :)

The Kickstarter has launched.

It is for the US and Canada only (including the PDFs), so those of us outside those two countries are out of luck. Apparently they have only licensed it for those territories, and will consider extending it if the campaign does well enough in the US and Canada.

PDF is now available to non-US/Canada backers and they're finalising shipping costs for non-US/Canada backers too. "Life isn't fair, it's just fairer than death, that's all."

The third classic blunder...announcing your game a year too early?

I hope Dread Pirate Roberts is actually a character template.

I backed it. There's an AMA on the rpg subreddit with O'Sullivan.

The map of Florin is a cool incentive to back on KS rather than waiting for distribution in stores. Plus I read there is a breakdown of how to have combat like the clifftop duel.
