WorldOfDarkness.com Closing Down
  • WorldOfDarkness.com Closing Down?

White Wolf has had a terrible year. As a result, they're issuing apologies, recalling books, changing the management, being absorbed into parent company Paradox, advertising for a new Brand Manager, and now... it looks like they're closing down WorldOfDarkness.com.

The message below went out to subscribers of White Wolf's online book reader service. Thanks to Distant Shore for the scoop!

First of all. Thank you very much. Never thought I would be mentioned on a En World article.
Regarding the news, I can only say to be really sad to receive the news the day before the site closure.
May be Paradox could show a little more consideration toward the World of Darkness fans.

This is the only answer I received from Paradox till now: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NZYVKqHg233iUbJ28

I recieved my email notice about my subscription cancellation, and subsequent refund (for the back catalogue library) this morning too.

It isn't a surprise - this is what White Wolf being dissolved means. The Onyx Path will continue, with their own business and licences. Not sure what they'll do with with the V5 license while they tailor the content to their own fanbase - but it's there anyway.

For me, however, Helmgast's Kult: Divinity Lost now becomes the default flagbearer for the 'modern horror, aimed at mature audiences' schtick. The new edition is incredible, but considering the hullabaloo with White Wolf this year, I'm hoping it remains a more low key release within the wider RPG community, notwithstanding it's own censorship issues before it's release.

It’s going to be a long, hard road for the game to recover from this year.
Last year V5 was the most anticipated RPG of the year. And now the game is struggling to get its planned releases out, let alone move forward.

Flatly, it's not going to recover. The Onyx Path may get a few more supplements out for it, probably via Kickstarter, but don't expect too many records to be broken.

It'd be interesting to see if VtM even made it onto the ICv2 charts for this past summer. But apparently that site has decided that info is subscription-only this year.

My gut feeling, for all the talk of opprobrium, was that the bottom line for White Wolf was it just didn't sell enough to meet it's targets. I think the core buy in price may have been too high.

White Wolf's Facebook page has not posted anything since mid-November when all the apologizing and stuff happened.

White Wolf's Twitter has stayed active, though.

Storyteller's Vault is still going strong too.

In fact, just a day or two ago on Reddit, the folks in charge of the Vault held an AMA and one of the questions asked was when V5 would get added. The official answer was just sometime late in 2019, after more books have been released, but they are expecting it to happen.

Interesting side note from the AMA, they are using the beta-test experiment with DMsGuild for PoD to see if it will also work with the Vault.

This being another mantra quoted ad nauseum online, currently.

The complaints themselves were that the game wasn't "woke" enough, by the way.

I'd say that the politicised attacks on both sides made it fairly untenable to build a succesful market for the game. As I say, I think the bottom line was more in the lack of sales, possibly because of more mundane factors (like pricing, etc). However, the continual opprobrium in the fanbase - the "Edgelord vs SJW" wars - was offputting to say the least.

If there is one silver lining to the sad demise of White Wolf in 2018, it's that at least there is no reason to bother interacting on the matter any more.

      Wow - that's some response:

Correct - at least in its current form. We hope that the (poorly) run services there will be run better in the future through other places.
I had a free subscription via the Vampire Humble Bundle the other month and I have not been impressed with the interface - it was hard to browse through books, the reader essentially was serving up static page images - I don't think I would have been able to use it to actually run a game. I certainly wouldn't have paid for a subscription after my essentially free trial was done.

This response calling that out suggests to me that there was far more going wrong at WW from Paradox's POV than just the Vampire v5 stumbles, and that perhaps those were just the visible straw that broke the camel's back...

Outstanding. Now they can have a future without being tainted by some of the hateful ugliness that was holding the game back. I only wish it happened sooner, but better late than never.

Yeah, 5e has really been struggling ever since they started pandering with their "trans acceptance in the core rules" and their "gay characters in their adventure books", and all that multiculturalism everywhere. Unlike World of Darkness, those guys smartly defied the oversensitive politically correct masses, and now they're reaping the rewards, earning both acclaim and monetary riches for their trouble.

Maybe Lisa Stevens at Paizo would look at purchasing White Wolf? That would be an interesting turn of events.

Yep, Modiphius just announced they are the stewards for VtM 5E and listed the books they will be releasing during 2019. All in all, it looks like VtM will do fine even with the shake ups at Paradox.

WoTC handled this in the best way possible IMO - presenting the fact that a given NPC is / was in a same-sex relationship as just another part of their background. No real fanfare: "This is just another fact about this particular guy, and not even the most notable fact". I like that. Usually, it's mentioned simply because their relationship is somehow relevant to the part they play in the adventure.

I mean, in some of the hardback adventures, there are casts of hundreds of NPCs. It's not unreasonable for one or two of them to be gay. In a world full of dragons, undead, magic and gods knows what else, two dudes being happily married is hardly noteworthy.

The one misstep they've made in my opinion, and it's a minor one, was they they tried too hard to defy stereotypes in Dragon Heist. I though the results were clumsy.

Ultimately, Wizards have made a big effort to widen the appeal of 5e (and by association, RPGs in general). They should be applauded. I never thought DnD would be a mainstream hobby again, let alone one that appears to now have an appeal way beyond its traditional demographic. They've demonstrated that you don't need controversial writing to make your game inclusive.
