Hello everyone, Darryl here with this week’s gaming news! D&D comes to four new languages, more Pathfinder digest books, new releases for Adventures in Middle Earth and Fantasy Trip, and more!
Gale Force Nine announced four new localizations of the Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks and starter set due for release in 2019. Each line will start with releases of the Player’s Handbook, Dungeonmaster’s Guide, Monster Manual, and the boxed Starter Set as well as the core spell cards and DM screens, translated and localized for the market under license to local companies. The Polish localization will be handled by Rebel, the Portuguese for the Brazilian market by Galapagos Jogos, Russian will be localized by Hobby World, and Korean by the TRPG Club. Release dates for the editions will be posted to their respective localization company websites, linked above.
Paizo announced two new releases in their Pocket Edition line for Pathfinder 1st Edition. The Pocket Edition line features digest-sized softcover versions at a reduced retail price compared to the hardcover editions, making them easier to carry to game nights and conventions as well as to store on shelves. The two new books are Ultimate Campaign, the soucebook for campaign development and worldbuilding, and Ultimate Intrigue, the sourcebook for political and urban campaigns and character builds. Each book will retail for $19.99 and release to mass market outlets on January 29, 2019.
Cubicle 7 announced the next expansion for their 5e-compatible Adventures in Middle Earth line, the Bree-land Region Guide. The book goes into detail about Bree and the surrounding areas such as Archet, Combe, and Staddle, plus features a new playable culture (Dwarves of Blue Mountain), a complete set of journey tables, and three adventures. If this sounds familiar to fans of The One Ring Roleplaying Game, this content is from the Bree sourcebook for that game updated and modified for 5e compatibility. The hardcover is available for pre-order for first quarter 2019 (for $34.99 including PDF through Cubicle 7’s store), while the PDF is available now for $19.99 through DriveThruRPG.
Steve Jackson Games has released the first new adventure for the classic game The Fantasy Trip in decades. The Chaos Triads is a 12-page PDF adventure and the first new product for the Kickstarted revival of The Fantasy Trip, featuring a story that sends the heroes on a mission of mercy into a dangerous labyrinth that brings them to the edge of Chaos itself. The labyrinth map is also cut-and-paste tiles for use with the Legacy Edition set along with a set of counters. The PDF is available from Steve Jackson Games’s Warehouse 23 digital store, linked above.
Plaid Hat Games has a new adventure board game, Comanauts. The “adventure book” game features a playing board set into a spiral-bound book that lays flat, allowing a progression as you play through the cooperative story adventures. The players take on the role of comanauts interring the irradiated dream world of a scientist whose experiments in creating a black hole backfired. The 100-page gamebook means there will be plenty of games to play through as well as hundreds of cards, standees, player sheets, dice, and more. The game will be available on January 31, 2019, for a retail price of $69.95 (though the pre-order price on Amazon is slightly higher at the time of writing).
Greater Than Games, publishers of Sentinels of the Multiverse, announced they are purchasing Nevermore Games. Nevermore Games is best known for their games Spires, Utopia Engine, and Dark Dealings. Few details have been announced, but Nevermore Games recently completed a Kickstarter for Dark Dealings: Dwarven Delve and it has been confirmed that Greater Than Games will be taking over the management and fulfillment of that campaign.
Hasbro announced another licensing deal for a physical entertainment center, this time a water park. The water park will be a resort attraction featuring a themed hotel, restaurants, and other entertainment outlets focused on several Hasbro brands. However, unlike the announcement for the Dave and Busters style entertainment centers from last month, this water park will at the very least include a Magic: The Gathering theme to at least some of the attractions. No location has been announced yet, but the resort attraction is expected to open in 2022.
Game designer David Flor of Darklight Interactive launched a Patreon. Flor has credits ranging from the ENnie nominated A Night in Seyvoth Manor, The Coming Dark campaign, The Dragon’s Master adventure, and well over a dozen products for the Dungeonmaster’s Guild. A $1/mo pledge gets you access to behind-the-scenes blogs on the design process, access to a private Discord channel, early access to new material, and more and at the $5/mo level, you also get all One-Shot short adventures published.
Humble has another D&D bundle with over $446 worth of PDFs available. The 5e Dragons, Dungeons, Maps & More Bundle has three tiers at $1, $8, and $15 with a lot of books and maps included. I mean a lot. At the highest level, you get thirty-six PDFs with full adventure paths, stand-alone adventures, one-shot adventure seeds, campaign settings, guidebooks, toolboxes for GMs and players both, and a lot more plus nine map sets including printable cardstock and paper dungeon kits from Fat Dragon Games. This bundle runs until January 9, 2019.
And if getting into game publishing is on your New Year’s Resolution list or if you’re just looking for cheap software for graphic design and photo editing, Humble also has the Professional Photography Bundle featuring $631 worth of image software, including Paint Shop Pro 2019 at the “Beat the Average” level (currently $12.95) and ACDSee Photo Studio Unlimited 2018 at the $25 level. This bundle also runs until January 9, 2019.
With all the various games looking to cash in on the “kid adventurer” trend (Kids on Bikes, Tales from the Loop, and several others), it’s about time for that genre to get their own line of miniatures. Morgue Miniatures has a line of 28mm primed, unpainted metal miniatures featuring kid/teen adventurers suitable for your 80s and 90s themed games. The line features some pretty good sculpts for the prototypes and the eight-figure set features a good mix of character types and genders without directly ripping off any specific property (so you can fill out your team without specifically getting the Monster Squad or Stranger Things kids). You can get one miniature for a £5 pledge (about US$6), two for £9 (about US$11), four for £18 (about US$23), and all eight for £35 (about US$44). This Kickstarter is only about a third of the way to its goal but has until Wednesday, January 2 to make it to £2500.
If you’re looking for a quick way to cut back on preparation time regardless of your game, Chronicle Cards hopes to be your ticket to faster prep. Each deck has 50 cards with all the information you need to slot in the relevant game mechanics, making it easy to stack cards together or draw randomly to flesh out an adventure or create one from scratch. The line includes four decks: Items (weapons, equipment, trinkets, and artifacts), Events (set pieces, encounters, adventure seeds, and mini-narratives), Personalities (creating NPC from a mix of positive and negative traits), and Monster Abilities (new abilities for monsters). You can get one deck of your choice for Australian $20 (about US$14), a print-and-play version for AU$40 (about US$28), or all four for AU$85 (about US$60) with add-ons and other levels that include deck protectors and more. This Kickstarter is also about two-thirds of the way to its funding goal and has until Sunday, January 6 to make it to its AU$5000 goal.
The OSR system Low Fantasy Gaming is getting a new deluxe edition. This system isn’t attempting to emulate any specific edition of D&D or any other D20 game, but takes aspects of each one to create something that still feels like old school gaming without abandoning the advantages of newer designs. The PDF and an at-cost print-on-demand hardcover edition is available for a AU$20 (about US$14) pledge along with several bundle pledges like a AU$30 (about US$21) for the Midlands sandbox campaign setting, AU$45 (about US$32) for 26 adventures, and AU$55 (about US$39) for both bundles. This project is fully funded and runs until Sunday, January 6.
