It’s August and that means that the annual #RPGaDAY ‘question a day’ is here to celebrate “everything cool, memorable and amazing about our hobby.” This year we’ve decided to join in the fun and will be canvassing answers from the ENWorld crew, columnists and friends in the industry to bring you some of our answers. We hope you’ll join in, in the comments section, and share your thoughts with us too… So, without further ado, here’s Day 20 of #RPGaDAY 2017!

Why is pure innovation regarded as important in games and adventures, even as it turns out that it hardly ever happens? People like to be surprised when they play games, and some of the most famous game designers such as Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, Zelda, etc.) look for ways to surprise players. A true innovation is going to be surprising because no one has ever seen it before. On the other hand, even though most "innovations" have been done before, if the players don't know about that then they can be surprised.

Tonight, at Gen Con in Indianapolis, the 17th Annual Gen Con EN World Awards (ENnies) ceremony took place. Congratulations go to all the nominees, and to this year's award winners! The ENnies are an annual award program celebrating the best that tabletop roleplaying games have to offer, created in 2001.

At Gen Con this year, there is a gaming museum (if you're at the convention, head on over to the Lucas Oil Stadium) set inside a replica of the Horticultural Hall in which the first ever Gen Con took place. Amongst many historic gaming delights, you'll see there a plaque designed by Alex Gygax and Larry Elmore, dedicated to Gary Gygax, who founded Gen Con and co-created Dungeons & Dragons. NOTE -- THIS EVENT IS NOW OVER. Tonight at Gen Con, live at 8:00 PM EDT (1am GMT) at the Union Station, Indianapolis, Stacy Dellorfano will host the 17th Annual Gen Con EN World RPG Awards! You can watch it live on YouTube! Thousands of people voted on this year's nominations - who will win? Tune in tonight to find out live! Not that the video channel will not be active until the ceremony begins at 8pm. If you're at Indy, of course, you are welcome to the ceremony. It's free - no tickets needed, and there's a bar which opens an hour or so earlier!

Day One of Gen Con has come and gone, and honestly it is already nearly a blur. So many people, so many new things, and so many bright shiny things. The reports that I heard was that there are 60-70,000 people in attendance at the con. I took that picture yesterday about an hour before the opening of the exhibition hall.

RiotMinds have partnered up with award winning author Steven Savile for a massive campaign for Trudvang Chronicles. Steven Savile has written for Doctor Who, Torchwood, Primeval, Stargate, Warhammer, Slaine, Fireborn, Pathfinder, Arkham Horror, Risen, and other popular game and comic worlds and is now on board for a campaign in 3 parts set in Mittland, Trudvang.

As you read this, I am among the teeming masses thronging the halls, game rooms, hotel lobbies, and restaurants of Gen Con 50. I struggled a bit to come up with a good theme for this week, as I'd already covered the ENnie Awards nominees to some significant degree. Then I remembered my first Gen Con ever, and that led me down the merry path you see below. It doesn't hurt that I am deeply involved in superhero gaming and game development right now, as those who've been reading this regularly will attest.

Despite bringing more copies of the Starfinder core rulebook to Gen Con than any other single product before, Paizo has sold out of them after just one day. Luckily, as they say, copies are out there at local game stores.

Could this be the cover of Green Ronin's forthcoming World of Lazarus RPG for Modern AGE? Quite possibly as the banner is adorning Green Ronin's Gen Con Booth. Green Ronin announced the license of Greg Rucka's Lazarus from Image Comics back in May, to be released alongside the Modern AGE this Fall.

Monte Cook Games has just announced - live at Gen Con in their first panel of the convention - it's latest Kickstarter, set to launch next month. And it's a big one - Numenera 2, consisting of two core books called Discovery (which revises player character options) and Destiny (which has systems for base building). It will be fully back-compatible with the original (2013) Numenera. More info as I hear it!

Green Ronin have announced they have signed a licensing agreement with James S. A. Corey to adapt The Expanse series of novels as a tabletop roleplaying game. The Expanse series is one of the best sci-fi series of novels and novellas around at present and is currently also on TV screens worldwide as a hit TV series.

Back in July we looked at Craig Campbell’s new Murders & Acquisitions RPG that had just been released. Now Craig has dropped us a line to let us know that a 28-page free Quick-Start Guide has been released in PDF for those who’d like a closer look before they buy.
