Villain & NPCs - escape/retreat fast?

What magic items or spells will allow a villain or a hireling to ditch the party? Bonus points if they allow it to happen fast -- immediate or swift. I'm thinking of things like a ring of featherfall, but perhaps more like a ring of teleport that is metamagic'd to have a faster-than-standard action activation.

Going through the old posts, I found that the Anklet of Translocation might be useful. Anything else like it? I'd be willing to custom-build stuff, but I'd like to hear how you built it (for example, does it follow the custom magic table on page 285 of the DMG).

Dust of Disappearance, Cape of the Mountebank.

Divine Spells: Word of Recall if a divine caster, a bought/lent Refuge item if not.

Arcane spells: Expeditious Retreat, Dimension Door, Teleport, Mislead.

Combine with contigency, quicken etc..

Well, a quickened Dimension Door needs a level 8 slot, while a quickened Teleport would need a level 9. So, spells might not be the way to go, unless (depending on how far you want to go) a quickened Dimension Hop could work to get a short distance away, as that is a level 2 spell and would need a level 6 slot to be Quickened.

Not sure on items.

Things like invisibility & going incorporeal help with escaping.

I'll go ahead and post what magic items I know of even though it might be out of your price range (not sure what the characters can afford):

Ability, Aporter Armor or Shield - MIC pg 6 (2x/day teleport 800-ft as Dimension Door spell)

Ability, Dislocator Weapon - MIC pg 32 (3x/day when hit, teleport enemy 10-ft as you choose, may help you in your retreat)

Ability, Vanishing Weapon - MIC pg 45 (1x/day if hits, teleport self up to 60-ft as Dimension Door spell)

Runestaff of Passage - MIC pg 181 (3x/day cast Astral Projection, Dimension Door, Great Teleport, Passwall, & Phase Door spells if expending arcane spells of same lvl or higher)


Runestaff of Transportation - MIC pg 182 (3x/day cast Blink, Dimension Door, & Teleport spells if expending arcane spells of same lvl or higher)

Belt, of the Wide Earth - MIC pg 204 (2x/day lose spell of 5th-9th lvl to cast Teleport spell)

Boots, of Big Stepping - MIC pg 76 (3x/day teleport 60-ft as Greater Teleport spell)

Boots, Dimension Stride - MIC pg 94 (3 charges to Teleport, 1 = 20-ft, 2 = 40-ft, 3 = 60-ft)

Boots, of Swift Passage - MIC pg 78 (5x/day teleport up to 20-ft as move action)

Boots, of Teleportation - DMG pg 250 (3x/day cast Teleport spell)

Helmet, of Teleportation - DMG pg 259 (3x/day cast Teleport spell)

Bolt Shirt - MIC pg 75 (1x/day Teleport self 60ft in line of sight)

Ability, Quickness Armor - MIC pg 13 (+5-ft land speed)

Ability, Speed Armor or Shield - MIC pg 14 (3x/day gaint Haste spell for 1 rnd, will gain +30 speed)

Acrobat Boots - MIC pg 67 (3 charges, 1 = +10 speed, 2 = +15 speed, 3 = +20 speed for 1 rnd)

my favourite trick for sneaky types is a Panic Button (Escaping) from CS. basicly it's a single-use dimension door as a swift action. not very powerful, good for low level campaigns.
