Character/NPC Generator

I'm converting my 2e world to 3.5, and I have literally HUNDREDS of deeply detailed NPC's to convert, I'd like keep them as close as possible and the workload is daunting. Does anyone know where I can find a good character generator for this? I'd really like it to support all of the wizard's published material, and if it has a help interface (like it tells you what the feats do and what the reqs. are) that would be fantastic.

I'm willing to pay for it if it has all the features I'm looking for, especially if it's free to try or comes really highly recommended from you guys. Of course free is always good too

There are various generators around, though a lot of the "NPC generators" you see will have some random aspect to them and might not be what you want for converting specific characters. Here is a recent thread reviewing some of them. If you want to customize, you might want to try PC Gen. There you can make all the choices, but it figures out the character sheet for you and has several output options. It has all the core stuff, but, if you want to add in non-OGC WotC content you'll have to learn how to code the stuff yourself (not hard, but pretty time consuming, I found). Unfortunately, WotC pulled PC Gen's license for coding closed content before 4e came out.

I'm playing with PCGEN now, it seems like a great program, but it's so slow it's almost unusable. Is it possible to improve this thing's performance considerably?

Good question. I haven't upgraded in a while, but when I was usng it more I found that some versions were faster than others. (In fact, I was hoping the newer versions would keep getting faster.) I'm not really an expert, so the only thing I can suggest is making sure you're only loading the smallest ruleset you need.

Recently there was a thread in the General forum regarding NPC Generation applications available, this person did a small review on what he liked and didn't like (Pro's and Con's)

Making a level 6 bard with each NPC Generator

NPC Designer, it doesn't have all the content I want (like warlocks), but it has by far the best interface. Kind of fun to use actually, only thing I REALLY wish it had were descriptions of the feats and things, like something that popped up when you hovered over it with a description, pre-reqs. and maybe the source it's from. But as is it still suits my needs very well. I'm still toying around with it though, so I haven't figured out it's full functionality yet.

Thanks for the link

Yeah, that was a painful choice I had to make actually. Interface space is a premium so I didn't put things like that because the usage would be limited, granted nice to have but still limited. I usually have the SRD open in a browser and able to check things I want fairly quickly.

You are able to create any scripts you want on your own and Warlock can be done.

Heh, I wouldn't even know how to create a script for it, but that's ok, It'll do well enough for me until I learn the game well enough to be fast enough to start making them by hand.

Again, thanks again for the help

I've been using E-Tools for years (Code Monkey Publishing). Since their license got pulled about the only way I know to get a copy is e-bay...
