Magic Lantern?

I remember seeing a magical lantern that, IIRC, enabled the party to gain the benefits of illumination but could not be seen by others. Very handy when adventuring in the Underdark.

Does anyone know where I might have seen it? I can't find it. I've checked the MIC and I know it's not in the DMG either.

Or maybe it was a spell?

There's a level 3 cleric spell in Spell Compendium p. 59 called Darkfire. It works like Produce Flame with a few differences. One noteworthy feature of the spell is that the flames can only be seen by those with darkvision, it is invisible to normal vision. It's meant primarily as an attack spell and only lasts round/level, but it's sort of on the right track to what you're looking for.
