Can a cleric casting Mass Heal select their targets?

If PC cleric has several allies that are down very low in hit points, but are in the midst of melee, can the cleric cast Mass Heal and select only her allies, or does it heal everybody within the "no two of which can be more than 30 ft apart" range?

Edited - I know the cleric can place the spell to maximize the positive effect, but if there were 4-5 PCs mixing it up with 3-4 bad guys, there might be no way that some of the bad guys would be outside the area of effect.

Spells that have a Targets (or Target) line in their description, according to page 175 of the PH, require you to specifically choose the affected targets. They won't affect anybody else even if they are in an area that can be affected.

This directly contrasts spells that specifically affect an Area in their descriptions (with an actual Area line).

Thanks - it was a bit confusing when I was looking at the SRD.
