Elemental Twist Dagger vs. Ancient Red Dragon

So a sorcerer uses an elemental twist dagger daily to strip fire resistance from an ancient red dragon. Can the dragon turn off its Inferno aura? Does it then take damage from its own Inferno aura?

my rule: the dragon absolutely takes its own aura damage. thats just a cool idea, I always reward cool ideas.

I would have the dragon take the aura damage one round, then turn off the aura. There's nothing in RAW that allows this afaik, but the dragon should be able to control the magic that creates the aura.

MM p280:
'An aura does not affect the originating creature unless the text specifies otherwise'
'A creature can drop its aura or reactivate it as a minor action.'

But, y'know, feel free to have fun too
