Mounted combat question

What happens when a PC is riding a regular riding horse into combat and the horse is attacked? The PC does have the mounted combat feat.
Thanks for any advice that can be provided.

The horse might take damage and might suffer from conditions or forced movement. And that's it.

So the horse would not be panicked, run away etc since it is just a normal riding horse?

There's no rules right now for your mount being forced to flee because someone swung a sword at him. Just like there's nothing like that for any other NPC(combat trained or not).

However, i'd think that the Mounted Combat feat would let you keep control of a mount in combat, even if they aren't trained for fighting.

Thank you very much! It would be nice if there were some rules for that. Kind of hard to imagine a reg riding horse in combat and not freaking out. why spend the money for a warhorse if that is the rule for a riding horse.

More HP, better defenses, higher weight load (which allows barding), and 2 special attack powers that the rider can take advantage of.

When a player is riding a mount in combat, mostly to make things easier, they (as the player not necessarily as the character) have total control of the mount.

Just because the horses are doing what they're told doesn't mean that they aren't wild eyed and freaking out about it. They can say that the mount is panicked, and play that out however they wish, having it hold back, or saying that it's moving forward but only unwillingly.

Mechanically however, mounts can be intimidated just like anybody else once they're bloodied. They've only got a will save of 10 which is only an Intimidate check of 25 (assuming that none of the bad guys speaks horse).

Mounted combat is pretty easy. You move as the mount moves. Either you attack or it attacks. Sometimes its powers allow for a bonus to your attack, or even special combo attacks, especially charge attacks. Some players have issues figuring out how to move a large+ creature though; difficult terrain, squeezing, etc.

If you have combats outside horses can give you an amazing boost in mobility for cheap. There are cheap barding items in the AV that can hugely increases their durability (like teh item that gives resist 10).
