4E Character Builder Supports Hyrbids?

Hey all,

Here's a question I can't seem to adequately answer via google or the Character Builder's faq:

Does the 4e D&Di Character Builder support hybrid classes for all classes? I want to try to build a Cleric/Invoker, and would rather trust WotC's program to do it than my own sloppy scribblings on paper. I've d/led the demo version, and can't find any hint of hybrids, but my DM says he checked a while back and at least found support for some hybrids. Can anyone verify that you can make a Cleric/Invoker hybrid in the Character Builder? Even if I have to get a 1 month subscription for full access, that's fine.

yes you can. Select "hybrid" under classes and you will be presented the options. For hybrid talent, you pick the feat under heroic, and then choose the option under classes. It works seemlessly.

I must say I probably wouldn't touch hybrids without the CB. That tool is just fantastic.

Yeah, it very much simplifies the process of making a hybrid.

The CB supports all hybrid classes for those classes that are presented in the second playtest article. Most classes are covered. The only classes that do not have hybrid character rules are the Artificer, Psion and Monk. All classes in the PH1, PH2 and FRPG are supported.

You can. I checked. Both they hybrid cleric and hybrid invoker are available.

To make a hybrid cleric/invoker, select Hybrid as your character class. This option is near the bottom of the list of classes. Once you choose Hybrid as your class, you then go to another menu where you get to select your two hybrid classes. Then continue as normal. Depending on your hybrid classes, you may need to select other class options.

Something to watch out for: the supplement class feature options may not be listed. For example, Hybrid Invoker won't let you choose Malevolence as your covenant.

As the others said: yes, the option is available (I know, I'm playing a Cleric|Invoker myself). Note that the implementation of Hybrids in the CB isn't perfect yet:
  • The 'at least 1 power of each kind of each class' rule is enforced a little wonkily: the choices at level 1-2 determine the choices at level 3-5-6, but retraining allows you to go around the restrictions.
  • Some of the new class features (Covenant of Malediction, Healer's Mercy) of DP aren't available yet as choices (I houseruled those in, myself).

EDIT: Ninja'd.

If you are using the demo version the data inside it may be out of date and not have the hybrid rules - if you don't see it in there, that is why.

Not sure if they keep the demo right upto date or not.

Unfortunately, they don't - which is a pity since we'll start a 4E Eberron campaign next month..

With the free version you get everything that was in the Compendium up to April 2009, i.e. after they added PHB2.

I suppose they'll update it again when PHB3 will have been added.

Unless you are below minimum wage, the CB is worth the money (along with other DDi goodies). It makes character creation, and most importantly the research of your options, at least 100 times faster. Which saves time, and time is money.
On the flipside, you are wasting much more time than before on fooling around with different character builds.
