4E - Wizard Spellbook Question

Hi folks,

Reading through the PHB today while trying to make up a second level Wizard character, and I was a little confused regarding how many spells a Wizard has in his spellbook.

I took the Expanded Spellbook feat....So I believe I start with three (total) Daily powers at 1st level, and get to add three more at 2nd level when I acquire my first Utility power.

Furthermore, the spells in the spellbook can be any combination of Daily/Utility.

Is this correct?

Can someone please list an example of the number/types of spells allowed for a first, second, and maybe higher level character with the powers chosen to help clarify?

Possibly with and without the Enhanced Spellbook Feat ?

Thanks in advance!

Not correct.

The spells in your spellbook are:

a) Two daily attack spells for each level of daily attack spell you know. So, two daily attack spells of level 1 (e.g. Flaming Sphere and Wizard's Fury).

b) Two utility spells for each level of utility spell you know. The utility spells can be daily or encounter or whatever.

Expanded Spellbook only changes (a). It's kind of a waste of a feat, IMHO, since I find my Wizard always preparing the same attack spells... if it gave me more utility spells, I'd consider it. Utility spells are awesome.

Cheers, -- N

So the feat would just give you:

3 Daily spells for every level of Daily Spells you know.

And you would always have 2 Utility Spells for every level of Utility Spell you know, regardless of whether or not you have the Expanded Spellbook feat.

The later could be replaced by other powers in your spellbook (like a Daily power instead of a Utility power).

Correct?

Basically, for each Daily and Utility spell slot, you choose two powers for that level instead of one. With Enhanced Spellbook, you get an additional choice for your Dailies only. They have to be all of the same level - no mixing spell levels/types. After each extended rest, you choose one to be your prepared spell.

For example, using my own 10th level Wizard (without ES), I had:
Daily 1) Acid Arrow, Rolling Thunder
Utility 2) Shield, Expeditious Retreat
Daily 5) Icy Grasp, Phantasmal Assailant
Utility 6) Levitate, Invisibility
Daily 9) Lightning Serpent, Guardian Hound
Utility 10) Blur, Mass Resistance

With ES, I might have also taken:

D1) Wizard's Fury
D5) Web
D9) Ice Storm

Does this help?

This bit here is wrong.

Be sure to say daily attack power, instead of just "daily power". Some utility powers are "daily", but no utility powers are daily attack powers.

4e cares about this distinction.

No.

When you choose your powers when you gain a Utility or Daily Attack power slot, you can -only- fill that slot with those powers. Powers you've selected for previous slots or for other -types- of slots are not eligible.

So, there is -no way- that you can ever fill a Utility power slot with a Daily Attack power. This is simply not possible.

Not true. Once you start swapping out powers you can choose powers of any available level for your spellbook. The utility/attack barrier cant be crossed tho.

Actually this isn't -quite- accurate.

Let's say you have three level 9 powers in your spellbook, but you swap one out for Sleep, a level 1 daily attack.

Well, now you have those two level 9 powers and Sleep, but that Sleep can't then be stuck in your level 1 daily attack slot. That Sleep, for the purposes of determining your powers that day, is considered your level 9 for that purpose.
