5th level, probably a fighter but I'm intrigued about hybrids and am open to other classes. I'm joining the group I've been DMing as a player while someone else takes over the reins for awhile; the party is in desperate need of a tank/defender. The other classes are rogue, swordmage, cleric, wizard, and warlock, so I'm thinking a fighter or even a paladin or ranger, maybe a warden or warlord, probably not a barbarian. A fighter-based hybrid interests me.
Half-orcs are a bit different in our campaign world, they are more noble and take the art of fighting very seriously. So I'm thinking a fighter would be best as I can go deeply into the "art of war". But I'd prefer more of a cunning quick-footed fighter than a brutish plate-armored tank.
My preference is always swords but I'm open to axes; I like the idea of both, although don't see why he would switch from, say, a great sword to a great axe except for the sake of variation. I actually like the idea of a wide variety of weaponry.
Anyone care to build this fellow?
(The other option I'm thinking of is a deva avenger but don't really think we need another striker; an assassin is also tempting).

Half-Orcs make perfect Tempest fighters. From here on out you can pump Strength and Dexterity or Constitution and take the Two-Weapon Opportunity, Nimble Blade, Agile Superiority, etc.
This is actually a funny build. Move adjacent to a target to mark it, then use rogue powers for sneak attack. If you riposted, they will have take an attack to attack you, or take your mark attack by attacking something else plus a -2 penalty to their attack. Doesn't really fit in with a lot of your requirements, as he'd have to use small stabby like weapons, but still seems fun.

Here's a quick Tempest Fighter multiclassed into Ranger for perception training. I choose a Khopesh as an axe-sword hybrid, and shortsword for off-hand for Rain of Blows, but you could actually use any other one hand weapon as an offhand weapon thanks to Two-Blade Warrior.
